THE FAT MAN - EPISODE REVIEW

Following is a review of the Fat Man Episodes that I have collected from
various sources.  It is helpful to me in searching for missing episodes
and upgrading the ones I have.  I've included some details on the file:
date (if available), Title, play time, bps, file size (approx), and the
Fat Man's weight as given during the lead-in.  There is a brief
introduction to the story.  I have not given away the plot or conclusions.
It may be helpful to somebody else in identifying episodes.  A ? indicates
information to be confirmed or completed.  This is a work in process;
I will be adding episodes and detail as time permits.  Visit the OTRDET

US EPISODES - J (Jack) Scott Smart set the tone for Brad Runyon as a fat
man playing the Fat Man.  He weighed in at over 270 pounds, while the Fat
Man's weight varied between 237-247#.  Smart brought a great radio
voice and acting skills to the part.  Some of the best parts of the shows
are the philosophical bits he does to lead into the show, and the one he
does after the show to preview next weeks episode.

The 19th Pearl - 46-01-21

This was the first episode of The Fat Man on ABC and was one of four shows
introduced that Monday evening, including William Gargan in "I Deal In Crime".
Brad is at Grand Central Station to put his mother on a train.  He bumps
into a woman who immediately uses him to evade someone and then disappears.
She leaves her bag, which draws Runyon onto the train, then off and into
an adventure with an actress named Kathy Evans, a wealthy man and a string
of pearls.  Directed by Robert Sloan. Bernard Green composed original
music.  Next week's show is announced as "The Unfamiliar Face".

Twice Told Secret - 46-02-xx

"Brought to you by your neighborhood shoe repair man and O'Sullivan's,
America's #1 heel".  Brad is visiting his buddy Moe Lipmann, at Moe's dry
cleaning shop.  Moe finds a pawn ticket in a rich man's pants.  Suddenly, 
that ticket is in demand and leads to murder.  Next week's show is announced
as "A Shot In The Dark".

The Black Angel - 46-07-08

Brad feels sorry for his visitor. Brad guesses wife troubles and is right.
John is worried that his wife Peggy is fooling around because he overheard
her say on the phone "Angel, John mustn't know".  This is not a nice angel.

The Crooked Horse - 46-09-09

Runyon tells the lady that he's not the police, when she announces a murder.
She's convinced that a person was murdered in the hotel room next to hers.
There is no body.  The hotel says nobody used the room.  She stands by her
story and wants Brad to investigate.  The more Brad investigates, the
stranger her story becomes.  Passwords? Spies? Murder?  Ed Begley as Sgt.
O'Hara. Charles Powers producer. Dean Kirby Announcer.  Next week's show
is announced as "The Dancing Tombstone".

A Window For Murder - 47-10-03

An old school chum, Eugenia Felt(?) is in town for a while and invites Brad
to dinner at her apartment.  Eugenia is a doctor now and a lot less shy than
she was.  After dinner, she is looking out the window and sees a beautiful
redhead being stabbed across the way.  Brad and Eugenia go to investigate
and find an old lady and a large ball of string instead of a body.  The next
day, a new assignment for Brad brings him back to the building where Eugenia
saw the murder.  Next week's" show is announced as "Murder Goes Sightseeing".

Murder Plays Hide And Seek - 47-xx-xx

Andy Maroni drives a cab and struggles to support his wife and three kids.  When
he finds a stiff in the back of his hack in the middle of the night, he wakes
up his friend, Brad Runyon.  Brad dresses and goes down to the hack with Andy.
No body, just the guy's hat.  They go searching for the body and find one, the
wrong one.  Next week's show is announced as "Murder Finds The Decoy".

Murder Wins The Draw - 49-04-01

Brad is on his way to Guatemala City.  Trouble, in the form of a lovely lady,
grabs Brad at the airport.  She pretends to know him but it is a ruse to fool
a man that is following her.  She snubs him on the plane, but pulls her act
again when they land because her stalker re-appears.  She runs off with his
suitcase, so of course Brad has to find her and trouble in the form of a corpse.
Next week's show is announced as "Murder Hits The Torrid Zone".

Murder Is The Medium - 49-07-22

Harriet Reynard's second husband, Oscar, joined his wife at a séance where
she insists she heard her dead first husband, Melvin.  Now Melvin wants money,
which Harriet is inclined to give him.  Now she's having second thoughts and
hires Runyon to get the husbands sorted out.  Herb May Announcer. Next week's
show announced as "Murder Rides The Breakers".

The Nightmare Murder - 51-01-17

Runyon opens the show with the recipe for a good "Old Fashioned". Brad is
resting from a brace of pork chops, when the phone rings.  The caller wants
him to prove that he really did kill somebody.  He's a novelist with a strange
story to spin. There is a pretty girl, a big red rooster, and a trash can,
and one thing leads to another and then to murder. Directed by Clark Andrews,
script by Harold Swanton(?), Lyle Sudrow(?) as George Dutton, Gertrude Warner
as Joan Cameron, music by Mark Winston, announcer was Don Lowe. From New York.
Next week's show announced as "Keynote For Murder".

Order For Murder - 51-09-05

The lead-in is a little different? "... who is it? Brad Runyon, The Fat Man".
Runyon was in Washington on business, and decide to drive a little farther to
see a friend in Maryland.  His car dies.  A stranger offers him a lift.
Johnny O'Reilly is scarred from the war and has a grudge.  After seven years
in the hospital he wants to deal with a major who got his medal. Brad decides
to stop him from making a mistake.
Written by Richard Ellington, directed by Clark Andrews, Vicky Volla as Phyllis,
Jimmy McAllen as Johnny O'Reilly.  Music by Bernard Green.

AUSTRALIAN EPISODES - Don't know the name of the star of the Australian series,
but it was not J. Scott Smart.  The stories still feature the detective Brad
Runyon, AKA The Fat Man, and are centered in New York City.  In the US series,
the Fat Man's weight varies, but in the Australian version he stays at a solid
239 pounds.

The Australian episodes ended with Runyon intoning: "It seems I spend
my life getting into trouble and getting out.  But at the same time, I
generally manage to get some other people in and out of trouble".

AU01 - Murder Squares The Triangle

Jimmy in the Army, so he agrees to help.  The investigation takes them

or so he says.  Murder comes first.  Kublan, the fortuneteller, is in

The Bronson Insurance Company hires Runyon to find a thief and a missing
necklace - the Solomon Rope.  Brad follows the trail from a reporter to
a Peacock farm.

A lazy morning in Indian summer is interrupted by a phone call from Joshua
Hernly, who wants protection.  Brad finds a corpse and a doctor with a
strange story about shooting a stranger. But who ordered the undertaker?

Runyon takes his mother to the drug store for a soda. A man walks in and
announces a holdup.  He wants no bills, only pennies!  This sets off a
chain of events with Brad chasing pennies for dollars.

Brad is ready to go on a picnic with Kathy.  Their plan is interrupted
by fainting girl who wakes up with amnesia.  A wedding ring inscribed
June 16th, 1940, a photographer and a statue add up to murder.

Runyon is called to an antique shop.  The dealer wants Brad to purchase
"The Laughing Lotus", a black box at an auction.  Of course, there is
competition for the box and there is also murder.

The lady wanted Brad to visit her in her home, an old mansion. Everything about 

Margaret Chandler whispered money. She is concerned about her nephew,
Byran, but can't go to the police.  He has a loaded pistol - but why?

Myron Van Horn is confined to a wheel chair.  He hires Runyon to resolve
a case of blackmail involving his daughter, Laura.

Brad doesn't normally like to work in his office late in the evening.
On his way out, he catches a young lady rushing out of the building.
She's rushing away from a dead man. She claims was shot. She's Sybil,
the dead guy is a lawyer, he was stabbed not shot, and Brad is hooked.

AU25 - Murder For Sale - 49-07-22(?)

Runyon is on his way to call on Oliver Winkler. He overhears an argument,
sees an armed man,  but finds Mr. Winkler safe and very interesting.  A
voice like the purr of a cat describes a threat on his life.

AU26- Murder By Mail

She was a big woman. Brad decided she looked like a capable, single woman
from a farm in the middle West.  She admitted that she had never hired a
detective and didn't have much money. But, she needed to find her brother
Bob.  He had moved from Iowa to get married to Irma Lewis.  It was matrimony
arranged by a service and through the mail.  Her letters weren't answered
but they weren't returned either.


AU29 - Murder Shows An Unfamiliar Face

Returning from a boat club banquet, late at night his headlights pick up a
woman in the road waving for a ride. When she finds out that Runyon is a
private investigator, she wants his help to find her father.  He offers to
call the police for her, but doesn't want the case.  After parking her with
his friend, Kathy, his next stop is the morgue. The dead man has a familiar
name, but how is he?  Matching the people, the bodies and the names becomes
a challenge for Brad.

AU30 - Murder Makes The King's Coffin

Eight O'clock and Brad is ready to quit for the evening. A phone call from
Mrs. Thomas King changes his plans. A man is watching the house, but her
husband won't let her call the police. Is it a coincidence that the police
are also interested in the man that is watching the Kings? Then a reporter
joins in to cover a fire at the same address. But who is in the coffin?

AU33 - Murder Makes A Black Moon

Runyon shows up in the Midwest town of Boone City.  a letter and a check
from Lucy Nelson seeks his help. Her fiancée Tommy is accused of murdering
a showgirl. Why would he do it?

The road wound along the river (the Hudson?). It was twilight. The call
From Annabelle Gunston brought Runyon three hours out of the comfortable
city. She wants Brad to find proof of her father's murder. She thinks his
heart attack was not a natural occurrence.

AU35 - Murder Makes A Silent Partner

Runyon would rather be napping. The guy who barged into his office with
a gun got Brad's attention and demanded he drop the Robin case. Of course,
when Mr. Robin called to hire Brad there was no question in Brad's mind.
A hood is blackmailing Mr. Robin - or he'll marry Robin's daughter!

AU36 - Murder Makes Music

A call from Jay Sherman made Runyon think back to 1929 when Sherman made
his reputation and a fortune as "The Boy Wonder". Is Sherman's wife playing
around with a musician? While "The Moonlight Sonata" plays, a shot rings
out and Brad and his new client find a murdered musician.
Fair sound with a little static and background noise. Complete.

AU37 - Murder Writes A Story

Runyon likes to read the Personals ads in the newspapers.  Usually it's
just curiosity, but this time it might be a case with a very nice reward.
A sweet little old lady wants to pay $5,000 for the name of a murderer.
She feels her son was wrongly convicted of murder. She struggled for nine
years to save the money that might free her son.

AU38 - Murder Meets an Uncertain Lady

Runyon's out on a date with Kathy. A note from a pretty redhead at another
table invites him to dance. He tells Kathy that she must be in distress.
She starts to hire him, then changes her mind, then agrees to meet with Brad,
then changes her mind. Brad decides that her husband is in danger and acts
on his own. It gets more confusing when her "husband" denies that he is married.

AU 39 - Murder Shows A Card

This episode begins at the front door of the Cartright mansion. The man who
answered the door looked like an English Butler, but didn't sound like one.
He advises Brad to "butt out"; of course, Brad ignores him. A tale out of the
old West drws Brad in. Old Crooked Nose left an Ace of Spades for Mrs Cartright,
and that can't be good news.

AU 40 - Murder Makes A Payoff

It's a brisk clear morning and Runyon goes to the zoo to see an old friend,
Henry the lion. When he gets back to the office he gets a call to meet a
potential client. The guy is jumpy. A note threatens his wife unless he pays.
He wants to pay and needs Runyon to watch his back. A fee of $500 signs Brad
on to the case.

AU 45 - Murder In The Dark

Runyon is hired to watch the rich man's treasures during a party - bodyguard
to goodies. Somebody steals a pistol and Brad thinks somebody has murder on

Mrs Craig calls on the phone to hire Runyon and warns him he'll have to earn
his money in a very unexpected way. She gives him an address. When he gets to
her penthouse apartment she wants him to go away. Brad spots a corpse in the
bedroom and the chase is on. Mrs Craig says she shot a man but is obviously
covering for somebody.
