The Prostate Cancer Research and Education Foundation

PC-REF, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, was founded April, 1997 through the efforts of patients active in the support group movement in San Diego and a physician, Dr. Israel Barken its Chairman. Dr. Barken is PC-REF's medical and philosophical leader, and promotes the empowerment of the prostate cancer patient through education and the development of a team approach between patient and doctor. Has provided over $200,000 in seed money grants for prostate cancer research. These grants allow researchers to develop the preliminary results needed for them to attract major grants.

PC-REF is unique because we are small and operate efficiently. We keep up to date with the latest medical developments. We consider the whole person, combining conventional and alternative approaches. We focus on regimes that can benefit patients in the near future. We work to help patients now.
