Hall Photo Gallery and GenealogyHall's Dairy a.k.a. Sunnyside Farms was the first victim in Uxbridge, MA for the taking of land by Eminent Domain. The State of Massachusetts took 55 acres of the farm, which consisted of all of its night pasture for the cows, for the disgusting sum of $20,000.00 in 1945. My Grandfather, Raymond Carpenter Hall, Sr., took the state to court and over a 10 year battle ended up with $30,000.00 instead of $20,000.00. The state, to prove a point, instead of buying the farmhouse or moving it to the other side of the highway (which is what my grandfather wanted), brought the survey line in from 500 feet to 250 feet, went around the farmhouse and back out to 500 feet. Today we wonder why America's Farming Industry, especially local farms, have met with untimely demise. Below is a picture of the farmhouse. It no longer exists. The Gold Rooster weathervane that blew off the barn in the Hurricane of 1938 is currently perched atop the steeple of the First Evangelical Congregational Church in the center of Uxbridge, MA. It was donated to the church by my Great Grandfather Arthur Samuel Hall.
Below are the engagement photographs of my Great Great Grandparents Joseph Carpenter Hall and Betsy C. Livermore who were married on 25 Oct 1860 in Douglas, Massachusetts. Joseph was born on 11 May 1839 in Uxbridge and died on 3 Jun 1884 in Uxbridge. Betsy was born on 2 Jul 1840 in Leicester, MA and died on 11 Nov 1920 in Franklin, MA. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Douglas, MA. They had seven children: Edith Eudora, Henrietta Florence, Arthur Samuel, Cora May, Theodore Evans, Edna Vinba, and Alvah Joseph.
