After Tim left, Ma prayed. She prayed her son would be all right. She didn't exactly agree that taking a car trip to California would be as romantic as flying to Hawaii, but there was just no way to make Tim anything but practical.
Well, at least he said he'd buy a new car. It wouldn't do at all to take a honeymoon in a pickup truck. Even a belated honeymoon needed something more than a pickup truck. Especially a belated honeymoon.
She hoped things hadn't gone too far between Edna and -- who? She was sure there was another man in the picture, but Tim didn't mention one. Well, it wouldn't do to dwell on it.
"Wouldn't do to dwell on it, would it?" she asked no one in particular. Well, she thought, maybe she was asking God. Or maybe she was asking the goose that had wandered away from the lake and was coming toward her on the patio.
Silly goose. That’s a strange expression,
she thought. What was so silly about a goose? A goose didn't need a honeymoon,
didn't need to be put in a Rest Home. Maybe geese were closer to God. Do
geese know God?, Ma wondered. Do geese hear God's voice?
