Bayle became a United States citizen on April 1,1885.

John P. Bayle & Mary Clarey Bayle helped to build the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elbridge, Mi.. Ellsworth & Betty Bayle had a Plaque hung in the Church with the name Bayle on, to honor John P. & Mary Clarey Bayle. Ellsworth is their grandson. Mary: Stories are told that Mary Clarey Bayle was always knitting as she walked. She always wore an apron with pockets in which she had Peppermint candies for her grandchildren. Mary Clarey Eayle would walk to mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elbridge & back from her home in section 6, Beaver Township. Starling out with a lantern before daybreak, at the first light she left the lantern at her sons home, Mike Bayle, east of Walkerville. The total round trip miles to church & back was something like 14. All this was accomplished with a pebble in her shoe as penance for sins committed. James John Conley said she would feed anyone who came along regardless of the small pittance on which she lived. James also said she was the best Christian woman he knew, James was her grandson.

John Thomas Bayle

John Thomas was about 16 years older than Carrie. John was a lawyer & farmer. The picture I have of John shows he was about 5ft.-8in. dark hair and eyes. He wore a mustache and a goatee. Carrie told a daughter-in-law John would have really made a good lawyer if he hadn't been taken so early in life. John died at age 42 years. I've heard John Bayle died from falling on a pine knot in the woods. As they carried him out he said in his Irish brogue "Carry me aisey (easy) boys carry me aisey". Carrie paid "John was such a kind & good man. He treated me so good. But that man never had wood for me when he went lawing it". She called it lawing & he would be gone a couple days. When John died Carrie was 26 years old. Carrie had 5 children 8 years old & younger to raise. On Dec.31, 1893 John Thomas Bayle's younger brother Michael married Carrie.

Grantor is United States. Grantee is John Henning. He was given a homestead Patent on Sept.15,1871.

John Henning gave the land to Robert H. Lee far $1.00 in 1877.

Robert H. Lee & wife gave the land back to Saloma Matilda Henning (John's wife)in 1877 for $1.00.

John Henning died in 1880. Saloma Matilda married Jim Clemons.

In Aug. 19,1882 Saloma Matilda Clemons sold the Land to John Thomas Bayle, who was married to her daughter Caroline. John Thomas bought it for $300.00.

It looks like John Thomas lost it (probably for taxes) in 1884.

Audition General sold it to Stephen A. Sears for $49.00 on Aug.22,1884.

On Nov.17,1884 John Thomas Bayle bought it back from the State of Michigan.

When John Thomas Bayle died, his wife Caroline Elizabeth Bayle owned the land.

When Caroline died her & John Thomas's children Mary Matilda Garvey, Lucy Eldora Sutton, Frank Chester Bayle, John William Bayle, became owners of the land.

The children sold it to Dale L, Gleasan & Kathleen M. Gleason on July 22,1938. It was recorded at 1:25 P.M. on July 26,1938.

Gleason's sold the land to Ellsworth & Sarah(Betty)Bayle on May 8.1947.

Ellsworth & Betty Bayle sold the South,West 20 acres to Francis & Patricia Oomen on March 6,1954.

Ellsworth & Betty Bayle sold the remaining 20 acres (with buildings) to Harley & Elsie Bayle on July 21,1956.

After Elsie's death in 1977,Harley drew a Quick Claim deed on March 2,1978,deeding the land to Marshall Bayle, Herbert Bayls, & Iva Janet Bayle Winkler Johnson.

After Harley died in 1978 the children sold the land to William D. Trussell & Marine V. Trussell on Aug.25,1978.

Trusell sold the land in 1986 to Mr. Drake.

After she & Leon moved to Grand Rapids, & lived at Mary Bayle Garvey's, she joined the Legion Auxiliary, & enjoyed the meetings with the ladies, & on Poppy Day, she cornered all the family a made them buy a Poppy. She was a gold star mother, & she had two sons in service in W.W.I. When we would go to the farm for a weekend, she would wait until we all went to bed & then using a broom, scrubbed the hardwood floors. No one could have had a better mother-in-law than the ones in her family. She was a devout Catholic, & enjoyed her church affiliation in Grand Rapids. After Mary Ann Bayle & William Conley were married they came from Canada, settling in Spring Lake & then came to the Volney, Michigan area, They were of the Roman Catholic Faith. Grammy, as she was known to me, in the age I knew her, was a plump lady. She had gray hair worn in a bun on top & sometimes braided. Eyes were blue & a very creamy Irish complexion. She was conservative with money & kept a small amount in the secretive place- she referred to as her bosom "Breast area on chest." Her doctor was well aware of this & would say "oh come now Mary Ann--dig down." She had a sharp mind & was a gutsy character. She chased a bear away from the house in Spring Lake where she & son James Conley were at home when he was a child. Her only weapon was a pitchfork. She could recite poetry & song from memory but couldn't carry a tune. She would tell grandpa the words to the songs & he would sing in his Irish tenor voice. Both she & grandpa lived in the same house as us. Shortly after noon she would ask me "Has the news arrived yet?" Meaning the rural carrier. When she sneezed she would say "Bless Leonard". My mother would ask "What about your other grandsons?" Her reply was "They don't need it nearly as much as Leonard." My Grandma Conley was said to have smoked a pipe but was careful in that no one was to see her do so. Also Grammy read romance novels & Grandpa was not too happy with her for doing this. Grandma & Grandpa Conley lost their daughter Lucy Conley Christensen in death because of what they called "consumption" in those days. She was only 31 years of age. Grandma died in 1937 at age 82 years of age. As the body left St. Leo's the church bell foiled 82 times. Once for every year of her life. She was the last to be buried from St. Leo*s Catholic Church & its final Mass. The church was torn down in 1942,I believe. St. Leo church was north of Volney. Written by her grandson, Keith C. Conley 6/15/1993 William: William Conley was the husband of Mary Ann Bayle. My Grandpa Conley was my first experience with the death of a loved one. I was a 10-year-old at the time. I will always remember how friends & relatives sat all night & watched & prayed over his body in the typical Irish wake. Grandpa Bill was born in WaterLoo, Montreal, Canada. He immigrated to the U.S.A., settling first in Spring Lake. He has his parents & brothers buried there. I have visited the graves because my great grandparents & uncles are there. Grandpa & Grammy finally settled at the old homestead north of Vonley, Mi. Grandpa Bill & my dad, James, helped build the old Catholic Church there on the corner of 11 Mile Road & Dickinson Avenue. As my grandpa, he was a gray-haired gentleman, partially bald on the very top. Blue eyes, & in his older years, quite shrunken but very active & walked with a cane & wore a derby hat. When he walked to the Catholic Church down the road 1/8-mile in his dark suit, white shirt, derby hat, clay pipe & cane, it made me proud to say he was my Grandpa Conley. At the farm sales he always had a ringside seat because he loved to buy livestock. He was known as a jockey because of his trading & love of horses. In my youth, he would let me smoke his clay pipes. He would regale me with ghost stories & mythical animals he called Sidehill gougers because their legs were longer on one side than the other so they could walk around hills & still be level. I saw him dance an Irish Jig when he was in his 80s. He had a good tenor voice & would sing songs like "The Little Drummer Boy". He would sing "Wearing of the Green" with tears in his eyes when he thought of the Irish in old Ireland & how they were subjugated through the years. The long row of Maple trees running north along the highway the width of the farm were all planted by him. The farm he & Mary Ann Bayle Conley started from scratch, still remains where the house, barn & granary still stands on Section 6, Beaver Township, Newaygo Co., MI. One other thing I would like all decedents of the Bayle & Conley families to remember is this: Both Mary Ann & Grandpa Bill took with them the last true Irish Brogue as the Bayle & Conley families truly spoke it. Grandpa would precede a statement with & "I say, I say". They are buried in their Catholic faith in the Volney Cemetery, where the plot must be blessed by a priest. The church bell foiled 86 time as the body left the church. Once for every year of his life. We traveled to Ireland. Mike & Caroline were married on Dec.31, 1893 in Oceans Co. MI. They had 6 of their own children & lived on a farm. My father was a hard working man. I remember the older kids saying that Dad put a lantern on the horse's mane so he could work after dark & before daylight in the morning. Dad had a very good voice & would sing to me often at night. We lived on a farm in Oceana Co. after we moved from the river in Newaygo Co. Dad bought a house in Walkerville for mom & I so I could go to high school, but he died before I finished. I was only in the family 1 year & 2 months before Mike died, so had very little chance to know him well. He always had a heavy growth of beard on his face. The John Thomas Bayle children said that as young people growing up, they remembered Mike Bayle as their father, clearing the farm for raising crops by burning brush until 11:00 P.M. Then getting up at 4:30 AM to start again, as it was mostly wooded acreage when he married Carolina. He would often spend winters in the lumber camps to earn extra money for getting the crops started in the spring & the extras the family needed. Mike had a beautiful singing voice & The children said as he headed home at night they could hear him singing, his voice really carried. She was full of fun & had a pleasant personality that made friends easily. Lucy raised 5 children by herself after Homer died. Her oldest son was in his mid-teens & helped her as much a possible to raise the rest of the family. Lucy worked at St. Mary's Hospital also, ending up at the sewing room with Mary. She married Charles Forner, but that only lasted a year or so $ she took back the name of Sutton. Lucy loved to go camping & to her son's cabin in Northern Michigan. She enjoyed life no matter hoe it came. She loved a good joke & liked to tell them. She was a member of Methodist Episcopal by membership, but always told everyone she was catholic when asked. She was a very complex person. Methodist Episcopal was regular Methodist. It is now United Methodist.

At an early age, Bill helped his brothers haul milk for his folks & neighboring farmers to the milk station. One day the boys were getting loaded & the horses got scared & started to run. Mom jumped on the wagon to help & fell & caught the heel of her shoe in the wagon wheel. She couldn't get loose & got her head cut bad. She always had an extra part in her hair. Bill left the farm & went to Grand Rapids to find work. He worked at the Pere Marquette & C.&0. railroads for many years. He met & married a dutch girl, Right over from the Netherlands. The oldest son in the John Thomas Bayle family. He was a short broad shouldered man, with light brown wavy hair, & light colored eyes. He was good natured & had great affection for his mother. He was working for the Pere Marquette Railroad during world war 1. He had a Family started, so never went to war. He stayed with the railroad until his death in 1945, when he died from a heart condition. He was a welding Supervisor over the entire P.M. system for several years prior to his death. His job entailed a great deal of traveling, from Canada to West Va. He was full of fun & was generous with the family in times of need, & was well liked by everyone who knew him. Storyteller.Originally worked in upper penninsula of Michigan as a lumberjack. Frank the second son of John Thomas & Caroline Bayle. He was tall & thin, & had dark straight hair & brown eyes. He looked more like his mother's side of the family which had some Italian blood lines & showed up in several of the children. He was a pessimistic nature but was a hard working person & was also close to the family. He would do anything he could to help someone & he also expected others to do the same for him. He loved his boys but was strict in his discipline of the boys but was kind also. He was very good to his mother-in-law who lived with them in her later years & had Alzheimer's & was difficult to care for. Frank also had a heart condition in his late 50's.

Frank had been a welder for the Pere Marquette Rail Road for many years.

He was a veteran of world war I. PVT. Frank C. Bayle Co. E. 117 Infantry. His American Legion was his source of friendship & he worked hard at it. Family Church-Congregational.

Frank the fourth child of Caroline & John Thomas Bayle was born on farm in Levitt Township. He helped at the farm chores at an early age. Frank also gained a stepfather & half brothers & sisters. Frank volunteered for service in World War I. He was sent over seas & fought in France. Some of the battles were called Aragon Forest & Chateau Therieu. I think my brother aged at least 10 years in the years between 1917 & 1919. Frank married Agnes Rhodes on May 30,1922, Agnes was born Jan. l7, 1897. Agnes was from Belding, Mi. & they called her a silk worm because she work at the silk mill. They had three boys. Agnes died Oct. 1,1977 in Grand Rapids, Mi. Buried at Rest Lawn Memorial Park, Grand Rapids, Mi. Frank worked at the C. & O. Railroad. Frank also died in his fifties from a heart attack.

He had a sense of humor & Christmas morning he would make a great deal about catching Santa behind the stove. Julia died 11 Jul 1977, buried: Pleasant Plaine Cemetary, Baldwin, MI. Julia taught school many years. While married to Brown they ran a bakery in Hesperia. They had Mason & Irene. Julia & Brown were divorced. Later Julia married Russell Ditlow and Russell adopted Mason & Irene. Julia & Russell had one child Buelah. Julia was highly regarded as a teacher in rural schools. Her mother Edna (Jones) Bayle lived with her for many years. After she retired she & Russell were fishing on a Government Lake in Lake Co. when they tipped the boat over. Julia was trying to turn around on a stool in the boat. She came up under the boat where there was a little air. Somebody on shore recognized their problem, rowed out & towed them to shore. She was operated on & the family took turns staying with her the months of NOV. & Dec. She suffered terribly & passed away the week of Christmas. James died 19 Oct 1952, buried: Volney Cemetary, Volney, MI. Some say he was born in Spring Lake, Michigan J. Conley was to all records in the Conley family born in Ottawa County, Spring Lake, Mi. I, Keith, am his son. In his youth, he was about 6ft. 2in. tall, had dark brown hair which was wavy or curly. His wt. was 170-175. In his elderly years, he was bald on the top with a rather heavy fringe around the back & sides. His wt. went up to about 200 lb. but he was a very healthy man. He left Spring Lake & settled on section 6, Beaver Township, Newaygo, County. At that location he & his parents, William & Mary Ann, homesteaded the old farm there, much of what still remains. In the early 1900s, it was known as the showpiace of the area. James was known by many names: James, Jim, Connie & others. Besides farming, he owned a general store at Vonley. He was an auctioneer & clerk & held many township offices. He helped build the Catholic Church at 11 Mile & Dickinson, North of Volney. He was a one time Lumberjack & continued logging over the years & he leased oil lands for the Sun Oil Company. Being Irish, he was quite well known for his story telling & was much sought after for such. Like his mother he could tell stories & recite poetry from memory. However, he would embellish his own experiences, he would tell his listeners "Well I'll tell you now I put horns on that one" or "that was a cock crowing bull story". He would try to sing but this was not his forte because every song was sung with the same tune. He loved to play baseball & listen to the games. He also was quite a fighter even though he didn't have a temper. He said they did it for fun & there were no hard feelings. A typical "Irish free-for-all". James J. Conley was the one who found his Grandma Bayle dead in her little house across from the old St. Leos Catholic Church. He is buried in the Volney Cemetery with his wife Ella May Conley, who both died in the Catholic faith. He always said Grandma Clary Bayle was the best Christian woman he ever knew. Written by his son, Keith C. Conley 6/15/1993 Ella: Ella May Newville was born of Charles Newville and Leona Wakefield in Ravenna, Michigan. She moved to Klondike, Michigan and in her early years married James J. Conley. Ella May, in her youthful years, was a slender girl about 5' 5" in height and weight of about 140. Her hair was brown as were her eyes. In her later years, her weight went up to around 200 lbs. and she became very plump. Her complexion was quite dark, this being the French breeding, but quite attractive. She married James Conley at an early age and they lived in or around the Volney, Michigan area most of their lives. Ella only had a 5th grade education but she was highly skilled for the amount of schooling she had. She ran the store at Volney when dad was about other projects. She was also very efficient about the farm. Her cooking was considered to be unmatched by many. She could make a meal from nothing. One joke we had was "Where is Mrs. Conley?" And we would say "0h, she's out pulling milk weed for supper, milkweed greens!" She liked to sing or dance when happy, she would be singing to herself while working. She was always good hearted and would take care of the needy when she could. She was very witty. There was Kaplin's store in Walkerville. Mother said J. Kaplin was Jewish and had a Jewish clerk. Mother Ella wanted some men's pants so she told the clerk. He turned to Jake Kaplin and said "Jake, take down your pants and show the lady what you got." Another time we had a black friend working for us and we asked him to have noon meal with us. He said fine and as we ate he was telling us of something he fixed that no one else had been able to accomplish. The black gentlemen's name was Walter Green. Mother attempted to compliment him and without thinking she said, "Well, you aren't as green as you look." Mother Ella May Conley is buried as a Catholic with husband James and daughter Pearl in the Volney cemetery in a plot Blessed by a priest. Written by her Son, Keith C. Conley 6/15/1993

Lucy died 29 Mar 1979, Hudsonville, Michigan, buried: Oakhill Cemetary, Grand Rapids, Michiga. Lucy was a nice looking woman, with light brown wavy hair & light colored eyes. She was full of fun & had a pleasant personality that made friends easily. Lucy raised 5 children by herself after Homer died. Her oldest son was in his mid-teens & helped her as much a possible to raise the rest of the family. Lucy worked at St. Mary's Hospital also, ending up at the sewing room with Mary. She married Charles Forner, but that only lasted a year or so $ she took back the name of Sutton. Lucy loved to go camping & to her son's cabin in Northern Michigan. She enjoyed life no matter hoe it came. She loved a good joke & liked to tell them. She was a member of Methodist Episcopal by membership, but always told everyone she was catholic when asked. She was a very complex person. Methodist Episcopal was regular Methodist. It is now United Methodist.

Harley died 12 Jun 1978, Hart, Michigan, buried: Volney Cemetary, Volney, MI. Harley was the oldest son of Mike & Caroline Bayle. He was 5' 11" & weighed about 150 Lbs. Slim frame, dark hair & like the others showed the Italian blood from his mother's side of the family. He owned a farm east of Walkerville, which he sold to prepare to go into WWI. The war ended before he could get in. Harley married Elsie Inez Kalman on Aug. 6,1921 in Hart, Mi. Elsie was born July 31,1903 in Walkerville, Mi.. Elsie died Nov.16, 1977 in Hart, Mi. Buried Volney Cemetery, Volney, Mi.. They courted with a horse & buggy. They were married 56 years. On their 50th Anniversary they were. remarried in the Volney Church by Pastor Andrew Visser. Harley worked for the Pere Marquette railroad awhile, but he didn't like the city. He lived most of his life around Walkervilla. He worked mostly in the woods or farming. We lived on the large 360 area farm while I was growing up. He was up before daylight milking cows & milking after dark. He worked all day In the fields except for one hour right after Lunch, that was his beauty nap. In 1956 we sold the farm because of Dad's health. We bought the Bayle homestead by Walkerville. He did some logging with his son Herb. My Dad loved hunting, fishing & telling stories. We used to go to the river (Mike's homestead) fishing. It seemed like such a long time & I never caught anything. Dad bought me a gun when I was about 12 yrs. old. Oh the fun we had running down the corn rows, Raccoon hunting at night. He spoke of his mother with nothing but love. Mother always said Dad was just like his mother. Soft spoken, calm, made friends with everyone & was always willing to help anyone. Elsie: Elsie Inez Kalman Bayle was the wife of Harley Bayle & my mother. She told me she weighted 110 Lbs. when she married at 18 years old. I was born when she was about 35 yrs. old, so I only remember her with gray in her hair & weighing about 200 Lbs.. She was about 5ft.4 in. Mom wore her hair in a bun on the back of her head until I was in my teens when she had it cut short with a curly perm. As she got older she had snow white hair. Mom never wore makeup or dyed her hair. She used blue white in her washing & being afraid her hair might get a yellow cast as older folks sometimes do she tried blue white in her hair. It gave it a blue tint & mom was so embarrassed she never tried that again nor did she leave the house until it was gone. Mom loved people & everyone loved her. She was the best cook I ever seen & that was not only my idea, but everyone that ate at our house & that was a lot of people. We didn't have a telephone so many times mom didn't know who or how many would be there for Sunday dinner. She didn't have a deep freeze so she just opened more canned beef, chicken or pork. I'd freak out if I got surprise dinner guests but mom took it all in strife. Hunting season & weekends our home was always full. I can still envision mom by the wood stove with large black cast iron frying pans, frying venison for a table of hungry hunters. Mom was not only my mom she was my friend. We lived on a 360-acre farm, 3/4 mile off the main road. Mom played with me, as I was the only child home. She helped me fix a playhouse in the corn crib & she would slid down the hill with me in the winter. Dad tapped Maple trees every year & we would gather the sap with a tractor. Dad built a small platform on the back of the tractor on which sat mom & 2-10 gallon milk cans. I rode on my dad's lap & we went through a big mud hole & kept going! Dad finally looked back & there sat mom in the mud hole, she was MAD! She said "You done that on purpose". She was ready to help anyone & she was a hard worker. As mom got older she got arthritis real bad & so she sat & worked. She was so fast with her hands. I remember once in a fruit factory we had to trim 8 apples a min; mom done 16 apples. Mom had an 8th grade 9ducation, but she helped me with my schoolwork when I was in High School. Mom suffered Cancer twice & she said, "why do we get what we fear worst". Leon died 16 Mar 1939, Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI., buried: Oakhill Cemetary, Grand Rapids, Michiga. Leon was fourth from the bottom in my Dad and Mom's family. He wasn't very healthy & was sickly most of his life. Leon worked on the farm for a while & later he went to Grand Rapids & worked. He was a quiet person that didn't bother people much. He did his best to get along with everyone. He loved the woods & fields. He could walk up to you without making a noise & he loved animals. Leon loved to read & had a lot of books that he got from people from Chicago that owned a cabin across the river from us. He winterized the cabin in the fall & got it ready in the spring for them. When Mom rented the farm before it was sold, the renters took Leon's books. I have the only one left. Leon died at an early age leaving his wife & an adopted daughter. Leon looked Italian, with dark brown straight hair & dark eyes. He was a hard working man that tried to do his best to support his wife & daughter, but it was depression era & he worked on the W.P.A. & in the cold & wet spring, & not well, he got Influenza Meningitis & died within a few days in Butterworth Hospital. He was a good religious catholic, & loved to read & further educate himself. He went to night school, after he moved to Grand Rapids, & read whatever he could find to read from boyhood. He was always somewhat frail, but always tried to do his share. He was a bit different from the other boys in the family, but he tried hard to be like everyone else. Ellsworth died 17 Oct 1990, St, Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI., buried: Resurrection, Wyoming, Michigan. Ellsworth was a white haired, curly headed child that grew into a dark brown-gray green-eyed adult, with curly hair until his later years, and he kept it short. He was always willing to help anyone that needed it. A hard worker, welder for many years at the Pere Marquette railroad. Taking over the welding Supervisor job John Bayle had held. After 2 years of that & not liking the travel & responsibly, he left the railroad & spent 3 years on the old family farm in Oceana Co. He moved back to Grand Rapids, went to work again on the railroad now the C&O & retired from there after 41 years of service. He was a kind man that loved his grand children & great grand children. He loved horses & had 2 for several years, also all other animals. He made friends easily, & also liked to camp, fish & hunt. He never liked living in the city, & always had a place with a garden. He had a deep devotion to his mother. He loved family reunions & always attended all funerals if possible. He was Catholic. Written by his wife, Betty Bayle Sarah: Sarah called, Aunt Batty or Aunt "Bet" is a short stocky lady with white hair. She is a kind I lovely lady who raised two daughters & later took Ellsworth's oldest half sister, Mary Bayle Garvay into their home to care for her. Aunt Batty worked at Michigan Bulb Co. & she put a lot of time & work into her yards both on the old homestead & in Grandville, Mi. When they lived In Walkerville on the old homestead she worked with P.T,A. 6 put together a mock wedding. A lot of work, she must of had about 30 children from 3 or 4 years old to probably 16-17 years old. It was a big success. Always willing to listen & help when she can. She has helped me with this book & stories. She didn't think she should have a story in here because she wasn't born a Bayle, but I disagree & I wrote this little note as I think she has that right after all these years. Thelma McCracken, my mother, was born in Troy Township to Caroline Henning Bayle & Michael Bayle on Dec. 11, 1912. She was the youngest of ii children & the family lived on the bank of the Pere Marquette River on the family farm. Mother went to Gowdy school & then to Walkerville school. She did not graduate at the time with her class, since her father died & she had to leave home to support herself & so did not finish her education until many years later at the age of 79, she graduated from high school after taking classes in a completion program. My mother is the shortest one in the family, about 5 feet tall & has dark hair streaked with gray. She always had a pleasant disposition & since my divorce, I have been living at her home with her. She in very involved with her church & classes & has a very full life. She loves to travel & has been to Europe & many of the United States including Florida where we had a mobile home for the past 3 years. She spends a lot of time with her children (the older girls) all of her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Faith Catholic. Written by her daughter, Frances Ann James: Jay was born May 29, 1895 into Clarissa Patterson & James McCracken's family of 3 brothers & 3 sisters beside himself. Their home was a farm in Carson City, Mi. He attended Bloomer Center Grade school a then St. Mary's Academy in Carson City. His father died when he was 3 years old & his youngest brother was 3 months old. Mom raised her children by herself & 2 girls went to normal & taught school. Jay served in the first world war but his regiment never got sent overseas, because flu broke out at Camp Custer & took two thirds of the regiment. When they were all better the war was over. When I married Jay on Nov. 26, 1935, he was 5 feet 11 inches tall & weighed 186 pounds. We had 45 years together & raised 3 girls. He took basic training at Camp Hood, Texas. Then he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, a group of islands southwest on the Alsakan peninsula. He was PFC Harley B. Sutton. He was military specialist-heavy machine gunner. He was honorable discharged August, 31, 1945. Ted worked at General Motors for 31 years. He and his family lived in Wyoming Michigan. Lester died 6 Mar 1966, Grand Rapids, Michigan, buried: Chapel Hill Cemetary, Grand Rapids, MI. Lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mick worked at General Motors on 36th St. He left GM and went into carpentry on his own. Miek helped Uncle Ellsworth Bayle the day he died. They were putting up beams in Ellworth's & Betty's living room. After going home that evening Mick and Rosie went visiting. That night, Rosie found him dead in the bathroom. He died of an aneurysm in his aorta.

Robert died 2 Jan 1992, Texas. Robert was the second child of John William B Thressa Bayle. He graduated from South High School in Grand Rapids in 1945. Robert attended Post High School at American Academy of Art in Chicago, Ill. Robert spend 1 year in the National Guards until he was drafted in U.S. Army in Dec.,1940. He was scheduled to be discharged after 1 year's service, but war was declared on Dec.7,1941 & his service time was extended. He was stationed at Fort Des Moines Iowa. Robert entered U.S. Army Officer Candidate School in Fort Belvoir, Virginia in Jan.,1943. He was commisioned a 2nd Lt. .in March,1943. Married April 10,1943 at Camp Ritchie,MD. He was sent overseas to England in Jan. of 1944. His 1st child was born Feb.18, 1944. Robert served in the Army in England, France, & Luxemborg, returning to the U.S. in Sept.,1945. The family moved to Chicago,Ill. & their 2nd child was born there. Robert was recalled to serve in the Army during the Korean Conflict in Oct.1950. He was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The family moved together to Missouri & while there the 3rd child was born at the Army Hospital. July,1952 Robert was discharged from the Army & the family moved to Amarillo,Texas where Robert entered the Art field. He worked in fashion advertising & taught Art & Advertising at a Technical College until retirement in 1982. Robert served in the Army Reserves after discharge & retired as a Major.

He passed away Jan. 2,1992. All other Family members are living at the time of this writing.

Frank died 3 Jul 1993, Hawkin, Michigan, buried: Cremated. Frank called Jr., was born in Grand Rapids, MI. As a young boy, a car hit Frank while he was delivering Western Union Telegrams. He went to the Army during World War II, but was discharged because of his back. This injury could have happened when the car hit him. He worked for the C. & O. Railroad for a while. Later he worked as a long haul truck driver. He used to go to his Uncle Harley's farm hunting. Frank married Barbara and that ended in a divorce and no children. Frank was a very likable person and a handsome young man. Frank's Aunt Thelma and uncle Jay were going up north one weekend. They drove by a man that was walking near Woodland Pare. Their oldest girl said, "That was Frank Bayle" so they turned around and went back. Sure enough it was, his car had broken down on M37. Frank married Leta Joyce Gibbs on March 8, 1952. Harold died 2 Dec 1995, at home in Kentwood, Michigan, buried: Cremated. As a young man Harold had brown eyes, black hair, was 5ft. 10-1/2 inches tall and weighted about 175 to 180 pounds. Harold went to school at Lee in Wyoming, MI. and graduated in 1946. Harold was in the Army in Korea, entering in 1950 and was discharged Oct. 5, 1952. His nephew was born that day and named after Harold. Harold Bayle was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Harold married Laura Mae McIntyre on Feb. 10, 1951. Laura was born June 2, 1931. Laura and Peggy are sisters. Harold went to school on a G.I. bill and became a Certified Public Accountant. He had his own business until he retired. Laura worked while Harold went to school. They lived in Kentwood, MI. and attend St. Mary Magdalen Church there. They travel to Wisconsin to visit their son and his family. Also to Iowa to see their youngest daughter and her family. Laura died 5 Oct 1997. Laura grew up on her parent's farm 3 miles south of Volney. After grade school she went to live with her uncle Bob & aunt Sarah Bayle so she could attend Hesperia High School & graduated in 1931. She worked in Muskegon for a year & then went to County Normal School in Fremont for 10 months to get her certificate to teach. Her first two years she taught at the Huntley School where two of her pupils were twins, Ray & Fay McDonald. The next year she taught at Shaw School in Hardscrubble. It was there in Hardscrubble that she met Chet Ward. Laura managed to get her Bachelor's & Masters Degrees from Western Mich. University. During this time she had 6 children. She retired from the Hesperia School system after 10 years with a total of 34 years teaching. Laura was the first Lady of Newaygo County. Willis worked 4 years in the Gypsum mines in Grand Rapids, then 4 years at General Motors there. Willis started driving a Grand Rapids City bus but was soon in management. He retired in Dec. of 1992 after 30 years. He still works once in awhile when they need him. His wife Verna played the organ in a bar for awhile but has been a homemaker all their married years. He took his basic in Camp Polk, Louisiana. He was in the European Theater Operation of the 3rd army. 492 armored mica, field artillery. P.F.C. Marshall C. Bayle. 11th armored division, serving under General George Patten. One battle was called "the battle of the bulge". When he returned home he married Jessie Mae Dickey from Texas, who he met while in service. They were married June 8,1946 in the Baptist Church in Hart, Mi. Jessie was born Sept. 29,1920 in Texas Marshall worked for Love Construction Co. in Muskegon, Mi. He also worked at Continental Motors as a welder & later a supervisor. Retiring from there. They live in Ravenna, Mi. Marshall is built & looks like our dad. We all have mother's talkativeness & friendly personality. Dad was quieter. After retiring they spent a few winters in Texas. Marshall loves to fish & makes a lot of his own flies. Marshall & Jessie love the LORD a are very active in the Calvery Baptist Church in Muskegon, Mi. Herbert was in W.W.II. PFC. Herbert H. Bayle, U.S. Army & serving in Iran. In Jan. 23, 1954 Herbert married Marcella Ost. They divorced on Oct. 17,1955. No children. He worked at Continental motors & Gerbers. Herbert liked to work outside, so he worked a lot in the logging & pulp wood. We went to a dance one night & when it came time to leave, there was a crowd at the door. Herbert picked me up & said "Excuse me lady with a baby coming through". People moved aside quickly without thinking & we walked right out. On Feb. 2, 1968 he married Patsie Way. Patsie born Nov. 28,1934. They lived in Alaska, Iowa,& Mi.. I was born in Montaque, Mi. on the old Pete Anderson farm. We moved to a Sippy farm near Walkerville when I was 1 year old. We moved again when I was 4 years old to a smaller Sippy farm a few miler away. This farm was 360 acres. I was raised like an only child as both my brothers were in World War II. I always had a cat or a dog beside me, as I walked for hours in the woods & fields viewing Gods beauty. I loved the flowers & would wade the muddy fields each spring to see if they were out yet. I had a cat called Grey, she would hide in my doll buggy about time for her to have kittens. Mom always got Grey outside before the kittens were born. The sides of the buggy finally broke out from that cat. She would come to the house & meow until I followed her and she would show me where the babies were. Then if I'd pet her & didn't bother the kittens to much she would leave them there. If I played with them too much she would hide them again & punish me for a few days, then again she would take me to them. I am 5ft. 8in. & never weighed 100 lbs. until I was about 18 years old. Wish I could say that now but at about 50 years old I got plump (enough said). I was born with medium brown hair I brown eyes. Now I have a lot of white in my hair. I hope it will be as beautiful as my mom's when it gets white. Growing up on a farm was great, we didn't have a lot of material things but the love & openness to be free to walk in the woods without fear gives me memories I'11 never forget. My clothes were mostly 2nd hand or sewn in love by mom out of a $.25 printed chicken feed bag & sewn on my grandmother's treadle sewing machine. I got a new pair shoes when school started & they lasted the year. Mom always made re wear those ugly Lt. brown long stocking. Marshall & I talk about those long socks & laugh about the garter belts mom made us but it kept us warm. For any young person reading this "that was the good old days" you hear about! See kids you have it good! I went to Walkerville High School & graduated in 1957. I worked in restaurants in Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Hart & Walkerville. I've worked in factories also. I have 2 wonderful sons & 3 great stepdaughters I raised for most of their lives. I have 6 Grandchildren. I live in Wyoming, MI. with my loving husband, Dave. When Cathy was little, her security blanket was her little pillow that she called "Billow-Billow". She lived in Pellston, Mi. for several years & played a Sax in the High School Band. When Cathy was in the 9th or 10th grade, they moved to Grand Rapids & lived with Aunt Mamie. She finished the last 2 or 3 years at Catholic Central & graduated in 1952. After graduation, she attended Business College in Grand Rapids, Mi. Cathy met Clyde Hathaway & was married. They had 11 children. Clyde worked for the C&O Railroad & they lived in Grand Rapids for awhile, but moved to Jackson when Clyde's job was transferred. Cathy paints pictures, takes photographs & collects glass & Indian Artifacts. She has a green thumb & can grow any kind of plants or flowers. Byron Center Rd., transferred to Lee St. in Nov. & attended there until 9 yrs. Then moved to Grand Rapids & finished Elementary at Oakdale School. She went to Ottawa Hills to riddle school & until Nov. l, when we moved to the Godwin district. Alberta graduated from there in the top 1/3 of her class, after finishing 1 1/2 years in 1 year in 1945. She sang in choirs at school & church, & at age 11 sang the solo's at her Sunday school teachers wedding. She belonged to several school clubs, & worked for 3 years before getting married to Lawrence (Larry) Kaiser in 1948. She was blond (ash) with gray, green eyes, short & stocky. She attended Oakdale Elementary, but her first year of High School was at Kellogsville, then moving to Walkerville, she finished High school there. Lucille had a lovely voice, & had a girls glee club going at Walkerville, which did the music portion of graduation, under her direction. She was also active in the church choir. She worked for 1 year after graduation, & married Mitchell Levandowski in June 1951. She & Mitch had a nice family of 11 children, & raised them in Muskegon, Mi. Lucille was good homemaker, & mother, great cook and seamstress. She was around 5 ft. 5 in. tall, with a large frame body, light brown hair & blue eyes. Fran had a lovely voice and sang in the church choir, as her sisters Edie and Mickey did. She also sang at mother and daughter banquets. Later she had a tracheotomy and lost her ability. Fran had auburn curls when she was a child, now it's dark brown. She looked out for her younger sisters and at times that was a job. When she graduated she went to work at Sentry Ins. until she was married to Thomas Stortz in June of 1958 and got pregnant for her first child, a still born girl in 1959. Later she had 4 children, a daughter, & pair of twins and a son. She was divorced in 1975 & then in 1982 married Donald Caldwell, who died in 1992. Fran is living with her mom. Her children are all married & she has 8 grandkids & a new one on the way. Fran took piano lessons and her first and best song was Far-Far A Way. She didn't like to practice so I let her quit. When she was little, she spoke with a southern accent, but when she got her tonsils out she stopped talking that way. Edie played in the High School band when she was in the 7th grade She was the Band Director, Mr. Johnson*s pet. Edie always worked at a job while in school because she wanted special clothes. Margaret Mary McCracken Ponshair Margaret was born on Feb. 22,1940 in Grand Rapids, Mi.. She attended school at Kelloggsville for the first 3 years & then went to St. Andrews & Catholic Central where she graduated in 1958. As a child, Mickey was quite a lively happy person. She always had lots of friends, although sometimes they would get into a fight, but the next day all was well again. Every time Morn & Dad took Mickey & the other girls to Aunt Elsie & Uncle Harley's house on the farm, Mickey & the other girls took extra clothes along in the trunk secretly & got to stay for a week. When Mickey was on summer vacations & didn't work away from home, she looked after Dad & made his lunch at noon & always had supper ready at night when Mom & the girls got home. She played the accordion & the drums at school. Mickey & Marsha Sutton used to be together a lot & went downtown with Fran & Edie & always made some kind of a crazy scene.
