Mission Statement The purpose of the World United Hapkido Association is to create a positive contribution to society by instilling positive characteristics in each and every student who participates in our program. These characteristics create a better person as well as a more productive member of society. The World United Hapkido Association strives to utilize only the most effective instructional methods. We strive to teach the most effective yet practical self-defense techniques while maintaining our devotion to developing the characteristics of each student. If every student becomes a better person and maintains a positive attitude along with the willingness to put forth 100% effort in everything he/she attempts in life, we can freely say we have accomplished our goal. --Grandmaster D.T. Rogers in an excerpt from the W.U.H.A. Curriculum Manual.
The Meaning of the W.U.H.A. Symbol The W.U.H.A. was founded by Grandmaster Rogers to promote and unify hapkido throughout the world. The symbol represents various beliefs that we adhere to. The Ying Yang represents harmony and opposing forces such as good and evil, light and darkness, resistance and acceptance, etc. The diamond represents strength and the main linear directions which hapkido practitioners move in, which are angles as opposed to front, back, left, right. The clenched fist represents power and focus. The cane represents that we study weapons, primarily the cane, staff, sword, and short staff. The dove with the olive branch represents peace and liberty, which is our ultimate goal for ourselves and others. Hapkido is a defensive art and should never be used to attack unless absolutely necessary to defend one's self, family, or country. Finally the circle represents the universe and Yu Won Wha (soft circular harmony), which is essential in the application all of our techniques.
Code of Ethics Students of the W.U.H.A. are expected to learn the Code of Ethics, and apply the Code both in and out of the Dojang. These points should be stressed in life as well as Hapkido. Application of this Code of Ethics will assist each student in developing a better character resulting in a better person.
