Notes for CALVIN THEODORE LOMAN:

The Calvin T. Loman family had experienced three years of crop failures in Baxter County, Arkansas, by the fall of 1901, and did not have enough feed to put their stock through the winter. Calvin, his brother George and Grant Hutchings (married to George's daughter Minnie Ann  Loman) decided to move their families to Ada, Indian Territory. Grant Hutching's brother, Jim Hutchings, was proprietor of the Texas Wagon Yard, located east of the present Dicus Grocery, in Ada.

The three families came by a wagon train consisting of three wagons.  The trip was made in three weeks, through woods, over a few trails and across rivers and creeks.  The wagons were floated over the deeper rivers.  For food, they used the flour and cornmeal they had brought with them.  They bought some meat and beans along the way, and ate a lot of gravy.  Their cooking was done in a 3-legged skillet, an iron pot, and in buckets over an open fire. Calvin's wagon had an "overjet", where there was a bed.  Each night the spring seat was removed and a bed made in the front of the wagon.

They arrived in Ada, Indian Territory in November 1901, on a Saturday, at sundown.  Calvin had a wife, three children (another on the way), a wagon and team, and Five dollars.  They moved into a two room house in Jim Hutchings wagon yard, where they lived several years.  The next morning, Sunday, Calvin took a job sawing wood for Five dollars a day. Monday morning, he began a Dray wagon in Ada, hauling water from an artesian well near the present Valley View Hospital.  For this, he had four barrels and charged 25 cents per barrel.  He also unloaded lumber cars and did light hauling.  He worked most of the day, and hauled water at night.

The family never farmed in Ada.  The children attended Ada schools.  Several years later, Calvin had a grocery store where the Duke and Ayers store is now located.  The Family were members of the First Baptist Church.

Calvin Loman owned two lots at 18th Street and Johnston Avenue.  The Family home was built on one of them and in 1927, he opened the Keep-U-Neat Cleaners on the other lot.  After his death in an Automobile accident near Coalgate, Oklahoma, on April 26, 1933, (His brother, William Lafayette Loman, lived near Colgate), the land was sold.  His son, Theodore moved the Cleaners to the present location at 14th Street and Johnston Avenue. (Taken from Pontotoc County History Volume II, in Ada, Oklahoma.)
