Basic ideas:
------------
Projected images
Simple static gobos
Dynamic gobos
Intelligent DJ Lighting
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&safe=off&th=a2194289869bc5b6&rnum=28
Strobe Lights
Probably way too bright and dizzying.
Gotta think about if this is a good suggestion or not.
Fog Machine
Cheap and plentiful near Halloween
Be sure to stock up on "fog juice".
Too much too often can create a sticky resude -- save for special occasions.
Can set off many smoke alarms
Most arcades didn't have fog machines, but some were often quite smokey.
Bubble Machine
Absolutely a very BAD BAD idea.
Virtual Message Writer... but on a motorized base.
http://www.theskyliner.com/index.htm
Definately not 80's, but nice effect. Customizable.
LED Sign / LED Display / LED Banner / Scrolling LED Display
Not really 80s (tech existed, but was expensive), would have worked well in arcades.
Lots of variations to look for --
Single color vs multi-color
Fonts and transition effects
Internal keyboard vs internal switches vs remote control vs computer hookup
Number of "pixels" tall (not height) determines image quality
Limitations on number of messages or characters it can store.
Starlight Ceilings
A ceiling which uses fiber optics to give the illusions of a starfield.
Clay Cowgill (my personal hero) thinks they're cool.

High-tech novelty displays
iBall display: at SpaceWriter or Laser Net or AudioVisualizers
Digital picture frame
Television
Acceptable in a home arcade.
Best if somehow related to the arcade.
Ties in to the theme of the arcade
80's shows (Max Headroom, for example)
Music videos
Computer graphics
Change Machine
Probably doesn't matter if it is working or not?
Pay Phone
Working would be better.
Video Wall
Made in a 2x2 (4 screens) or 3x3 grid (9 screens) to build a larger picture.
Would go VERY WELL with a hacked TiVo that would continuous play things from 80s.
The video processor required is EXPENSIVE (~$5K)
Video Projector
Play JAMMA games on a huge wall area.
Impressive screen size.
Tokens for your machines
More of an arcade feel than free-play games.
Can minimize the problems with "the guest who does not want to stop playing".
Coin mechs usually require adjustment. Sometimes replacement.
Idea: Perhaps just have games that don't do FREE PLAY accept tokens.
Souvenirs for visitors (both good and bad in some aspects)
Making sure you have enough on hand, and cleaning out the change box.
Vintage arcade tokens - http://www.fantasticprices.com/token/deals.html
Generic brass tokens - http://www.happcontrols.com/cc/42073100.htm
Custom made tokens (not cheap).
Giving your arcade a name!
Rom hacks to go with it?
A custom sign would go great with it.
What about a custom neon sign? *
Fire House Neon and their custom work page

Goldmine, Electric Palace, Launch Pad, Silverball Arcade,
Space Chase, Stargate, Mr. Arcade, World of Games, Games R Us,

Time Out, Fun City, Starship Fantasy, Game Fever, Diversions,
The Family Game Room, Game Town, Fun 'n Games, Fuzzy's Arcade,

Some ideas on naming your arcade:
Include your name: Deborah's Arcade, Scotty's Electric Android
Sample Keywords: Space, Play, Fun, Games, Electronic, Electric, City
Reference to the 1980's: Retroroom, The Atari Memorial, Pixeled Pastimes
Stools for games
Place in front of some of the more popular games to give legs a rest.
INSANE - Hiring an attendant
Hiring a poor lad to wear a themed outfit and instruct your guests not
to have food and drinks around the machines, no smoking, no banging the
machines, refunds for lost tokens...
Pop/Soda/Coke Machine
Perhaps vending beer, if desired? (Local laws may prohibit in some areas.)
A bad idea if you don't want drinks around your games.
A beer vending machine can make it tough to control minors or cut people off.
Lots of different models to choose from.
Very very heavy and difficult to move (on purpose!)
Requires a small learning curve to operate
Available cheap on eBay, but watch the location. Shipping is expensive!
A good eBay vending search for you to use. Limit this to "items near me".
Vending Machine / Candy Machine / Gumball Machine
Matches the the arcade theme very well.
With gumballs, beware of those who would carelessly discard used pieces.
Aged Whiskey Barrels
With a liner (not as deep as barrel), its great to hold ice and bottles/cans.
Image: http://www.rainbarrelsandmore.com/images/beverage%20barrel.jpg
Example vendor: http://www.whetselllumber.com/barrels2.html
More gameroom than arcade-like. Seen occassionally in retail business.
Many appear to be authentic Jack Daniels barrels.
Kitchenette
Small refrigerator to keep cold drinks in.
A sink to help take care of messes and cleaning.
Paper towel dispenser.
Dining Booth (table w/chairs)
A restaraunt booth would be ideal.
For taking a breather, drinking, eating, etc.
Possible to integrate a video game into the table? Internet access?
Sofa
Nice place to sit down and relax.
Maybe watch television?
SELF-NOTE TO AUTHOR: Divide out a separate area for furniture.
Food
Pizza. Absolutely no question. Pizza and arcades go hand-in-hand.
Alternatives: Corn dogs, hot dogs, chips, burritos?
Soft drinks.
