EXTRA MATH SUPPORT: If
a student needs more
math support than a parent can give, or than I can give with the times
I have available for math help, then some options are to look for other
math materials to supplement the school textbook, use webpages that can
give simpler or more direct information, get help from fellow students,
or find tutors who could teach
a student outside of Mt. Everest Academy.
- OTHER MATH
MATERIALS: Every large bookstore has a math
section,
and there are books available for almost every math subject. I
cannot personally recommend any particular books, but parents and
students might find some good ones if they look through the available
books for appropriate topics and interesting and understandable methods
of explaining those topics.
- WEBSITES:
There are numerous math websites available on the internet. I
have identified some websites appropriate for each course I
teach. Those websites are found on pages I've made for each
course, linked to the main
math page. Go to that page and find your course's links in
the list in the middle, titles, "Useful Internet Links".
- ONLINE VIDEOS: For
many math topics, there are online videos that can be of great help in
explaining and showing how to do something. I have linked some
math video sites to my links pages, so go to those pages.
- PUBLISHER ONLINE VIDEOS:
For Pre-Algebra and Algebra, there are videos available online from the
publisher for almost every lesson in the textbook. Look for a
sidebar titled, "Homework Video Tutor." Underneath it will be the
website URL and the web code you need to use when you go to that
webpage.
- STUDENT-MADE
STUDY GROUPS: Students in math classes
might want to make their own study groups, of 2 to 5 people, where you
can help each other understand things better. Talk to other
students at Mt. Everest to plan a time to meet. There are few
places to meet at Mt. Everest without distraction or that don't need
supervision, so it's easiest and safest to meet at the home of one of
the students in the small group you make.
- TUTORS:
NOTE: This section is for parents. Only parents should contact
any of these people or groups.
- I know of two quality tutors
who are available
as paid tutors outside of school.
- Ms.
Becky Breedlove is a retired math teacher with 31 years of
experience. Most of her experience was in this school district
with the same curriculum that we use at Mt. Everest. She is
available at 619-990-0248 or
at bblove2@cox.net.
- Mr.
Glenn Creswell has
eight years of community college teaching experience with a BA and MA
from UCSD in Applied Math. He has taught pre-algebra, algebra 1
and 2,
college algebra, statistics, calculus, and differential
equations. He is also one of our parents here at Mt. Everest
Academy; he has home-schooled his two sons for 8 years. He is
available at 858-576-1761 or
at glswell6403@sbcglobal.net.
- Parents can contact local area colleges and ask if they have
lists of students or a way to contact prospective student tutors.
- San Diego State University has a tutor
list, but SDSU doesn't seem to update it often (though they might be
updating it and not changing the date shown on the page). NOTE: I cannot
attest to the quality of any outside tutoring programs or
tutors.
- There are various tutoring centers available in the San Diego
area. NOTE:
I cannot
attest to the quality of any outside tutoring programs or tutors.
Most of these listed I simply found by doing a websearch. Do not
use these services without researching adequatetly to determine if they
provide what you need. I cannot tell you that; you will have to
look at the tutoring service and decide for yourself.
