Spring
2005 - Green Hills of Missouri
I took a cycle tour up through the Green Hills Region of Missouri, near Princeton, where we
lived for 3 years about 20 years ago. Here's some photos I took on this
ride. Click here to read
my journal from this ride.

| This
area is a hidden gem of Missouri, the roads were perfect for cycling,
with long stretches with little or no traffic. Rolling hills, some of
them surprisingly steep - almost "Ozarkian".
|

The
weather was great for 2 days, with plenty of sunshine and little
winds. Of course, Monday turned into one of those touring days from
hell, with 50 miles of headwinds back to the car. But in this photo
all is perfect! |

Hard
to see the road (lousy camera) but off in the distance you can see the
ribbon of pavement. This area has miles of no flat road, you're either
going up or down. Wonderful twisty backroads. Love 'em |

In
Princeton, the county seat of Mercer County. This was our first place
there, a wonderful 100 year old house. Note the statue to the left of
the house - next door was a creepy old house with a new library built
on the property. Interesting story about the meat cutter and the
heiress. Small towns have lots of stories. |
|
It's
now Pearl's care center, but this was the clinic Katie worked at. Once
a governor's house, it's just up the hill from our first house. A
great place for her to establish her first practice. I asked a lady at
the grocery if she remembered the doc from 20 years ago, and of course
she did, "Dr. Katie, wasn't that her name?" |
|

| The best part of
cycle touring is the camping. I woke up Monday morning to an empty
campground, the lake to myself. Still, quiet, and peaceful.

Back
to the car, the hills weren't so steep but the wind was blowing at 25
mph straight at me. For a while I wondered what in the world I was
doing out there, but I always came back to the main idea of cycle
touring for me: Gratitude. Gratitude to experience the world as it
really is - slow enough to smell the flowers and hear the birds
singing, and plenty of time to think.
Yah,
I think I'll do it again. Maybe a long tour next year, cross country
some day?
