San Ignacio Lagoon

Baja California Mexico

March 2000

We made another trip down to the lagoon to visit the gray whales up close and personal. This is the seventh time we have gone back to this special place on earth. We got to celebrate the good news that they were not going to build a big salt plant at the edge of the lagoon, so it would stay a remote and wild area of our planet.
In the past we had visited in February and had not always been lucky enough to have a "friendly encounter" with the whales. This time we tried March. We had heard that the mothers let their calves go visit the boats while mom got some rest. It turned out to be true. Here you see Bob's daughter Jana petting a calf.
It seems like every time we go we get a good picture of a spy hop, and this year was no exception. Here a mom is teaching the calf to spy hop, she kept spy hopping and occasionally you would see the baby sort of jump up, but it never seemed to get the hang of it.
Of the 18 people on the trip, seven were with our group. There were the 2 of us: Bob's daughter Jana; his son-in-law Bill; Joyce's cousin Pat; and our African traveling friends, Betsy and Paul. Bill has put together a web page for the trip showing the camp and many details from the trip visit it at Bill's Whale Watching.
We saw a pit of mating activity. This tail lob was part of the many frantic activities, which occurred during our hour watching these large creatures. Bob wanted to include his Pink Floyd picture, but we didn't want our web page to be censored.
