Canadian Rockies
September 2001
When we planned our trip to Canada it included a train ride from Toronto to Jasper National Park, a car trip down to Banff and then onto another train to Vancouver. Due to the tragic events of September 11 we had to change our plans. After many days of changing plans, we finally made it to Edmonton so we could start our trip in Jasper National Park.

The trip consisted of Bob's brother Ron, his wife Judy, Joyce's cousin Pat and of course Bob and Joyce.

Here we are at Patricia Lake in Jasper National Park. You can see the yellow of aspen in the background and tell that there is a bit of nip in the fall air from our jackets.

We took a boat ride on Maligne Lake (pictured at left), we walked a few paths, it snowed on us while we were flight seeing in a small airplane, and we saw lots of wildlife, right along side of the road.
Upper left is a young moose that was munching grass with its mom. In the upper right is a female big horn sheep as she walked down the middle of the road.

The bear to the left was having a field day eating berries and the squirrels around the Jasper Park Lodge where we stayed were busy eating and collecting pine cones for winter.

We took a hike to Angel Glacier on the side of Edith Cavell mountain.

This is just one of our "daily pictures" of the gang.

It was a full and busy day driving down the Columbia Icefields Parkway. That was because we had to keep stopping to ogle at the various glaciers and mountain peaks. We took a "SnowCoach" out on to the Athabasca Glacier. It was cold up there and it was snowing. You can see Joyce is bundled up a bit.

A "Snow Coach" is a bus on sets of dual tires, each about 5 feet in diameter and 2 feet wide.

Emerald Lake turned out to be one of our favorite places. The scenery was beautiful and it was not as crowded as some of the other places. You can see the mirror of the peaks on the emerald green lake and see how it got its name. The lodge is on a spit of land with small houses containing four rooms scattered over the hillside.
Emerald Lake is in Yoho National Park, just west of Banff. We visited the Takakkaw Falls, and Bob just couldn't resist this sight of the sun in the morning as we were checking out for our next destination, Banff.
Here is Bob and his brother Ron, they do too look alike.
While in Banff National Park we stopped at Lake Louise, which is very pretty but there were way too many people for us, so we headed to Moraine Lake and the valley of the ten peaks, pictured above. It was lovely and we took a stroll along the edge of the lake, before our stop for a picnic lunch.

We took a boat ride on Lake Minnewanka, and walked along the edge of the lake for a short while. The picture to the left is a small spit of land that looks like a small island

We then boarded the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer train for a two day ride into Vancouver. This picture shows the front of the train. We were in the last car, one of the two domed cars on the train.

We were waited on hand and foot, with delicious food and the beautiful landscape passing overhead. Downstairs and in the rear of the train, you could standout outside. Bob spent most of his time there, because he could photograph without the glare of the domed glass. Joyce spent time out there with her video camera, but it was really cold so she would go inside to sit and get warm. The peak on the right is a sample of some of the scenery we saw on the trip.
