For five days we were among bears. Some were shy and would run away, some curious and come close, most just did not care and went about what they were doing. Most of the time we watched bears eating the sedge grass. We learned that they get a lot of protein from the tender tips of the plant. We also watched bears cooling off in the streams; we got a real chuckle when one started to blow bubbles in the water. We also watched bears digging up clams for snacks.

Up close and personal with brown bears (A.K.A grizzlies) was something we did not know we could or even wanted to do, but there we were SITTING on the ground with a bear walking within 10 feet of us. Our guide Matt said, “it is a young bear and way to small to attack a group this size (we were 6), so just don’t move and it will be fine.” And of course it was.

We did get to see a few young cubs with their mom. But every time a big boar would come around, the sow would move her cubs off and away from us.

Clicking on the bear or the eagle picture on the left will take you to a slide show of some of our sights. The floatplane will take you to details of our journey.
