Whale Excursions

We have taken many excursions to observe, pet and swim with whales. That goes along with the more 800 hours we spend each year sitting at the edge of a cliff in Southern California counting the gray whales on their migration from north of Alaska to the lagoons of Baja and then back north again. To visit our web page describing our work on the American Cetecean Society gray whale census, click here.

We traveled to one lagoon in Baja on seven different occasions, each time it is a different experience. In 1999 we traveled with our oldest granddaughter, Jen (the 4th granddaughter to go). That trip is retold at our Baja 1999 page.

In the year 2000 we went back with Bob's daughter who had requested that she become a granddaughter after she found we were taking the four oldest girls to Africa. That trip can be found at Baja 2000.

Also in 2000 we had traveled to the Dominican Republic, took a boat 90 miles off shore to a place called Silver Bank and snorkeled with humpback whales.

In June of 1999 we visited the San Juan Islands in the state of Washington and then on to Vancouver Island in Canada. While in the San Juan Islands we spotted Orcas (Killer Whales) every day.

We have had many other whale excursions, but those are the only ones Joyce have had a chance to chronicle on the net.

This humpback whale was photographed while we worked on "Humpbacks Off Hawaii" a research project through The Dolphin Institute of the University of Hawaii. The project was in Maui in 1998.
