Many of the volunteers have binoculars similar to the ones pictured here. They are 7 by 50. That means they magnify 7 times what you see (which isn't a lot for binoculars) and they have a wide lens opening (the 50). They let in a lot of light and are easier to hold steady than if they magnified more.
But the best part is they have a compass in them. You can see the compass is reading 271 degrees. Those tic marks are what we call reticles, each short tick is 5 mils and the longer ticks are 10 mils. So this whale is at 30 mils. We determin the number of whales in each sighting and track each sighting by logging the time degrees and mils of each surfacing.
