| We are located on the cliffs at Point Vicente Lighthouse. As you can see from this map, this point of land sticks out into the ocean. On the southbound migration many whales swim along the Channel Islands such as Santa Cruz Island and on the outside of Catalina Island, so we are unable to see them. The ones we do see either swim along the shore and into Santa Monica Bay or they swim point-to-point and swim from Point Dume to Point Vicente.
The exact location of the census has changed over the years. When Bob and I started seven seasons ago, it was at Point Vicente Interpretive Center, in other years it was at Long Point and Point Vicente. All locations were within a mile of Point Vicente. |
