Andrew A. Spickerman was born 25 January 1798 to Andreas Spickerman and Sarah Gardner. He was baptized 25 February 1798 at Linlithgo Reformed Church with James Gardner and Marytje Harder as sponsors.1 He grew up in Kinderhook, home to Martin Van Buren who would later become the 8th U.S. President. He married Catherine Budd; however, no record of their marriage exists, but it is assumed they married circa 1818 in Livingston, Columbia County, New York.2 His wife Catherine was born in 1798 in Dutchess County, New York to John Budd and Hannah Nelson.3 Catherine was second cousin to John I. Budd who married Andrew’s aunt, Elizabeth Spickerman.4 Andrew and Catherine raised their family in Hillsdale in the 1830s-1840s where Andrew was town supervisor in 1844 and 1845.5 With the exception of being town supervisor for two years, Andrew was a well-respected farmer his whole life.6 About 1848, Andrew and his family moved to Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY.7 Not the whole family lived together—Andrew and Catherine’s son James lived with his uncle, John G. Budd and wife Sarah, in the 1850s.8 In the late 1850s, Andrew’s three sons—John, James and George—decided to leave New York for Illinois.9 With three of their sons gone, Andrew and Catherine began to share their living quarters with other families. By 1860, Andrew and his wife, along with their daughter Phebe and granddaughter Hattie, were sharing a house with the John S. Ostrander family. Their son Justus had already moved in with uncle John G. Budd.10 After their daughter Phebe married in 1861, Andrew and Catherine moved in with her and her husband Edward.11 In the 1870s, another son, William, decided to join his two brothers, James and George, in Illinois.12 (Their oldest brother John had died in 1862.) In 1878, Justus moved to Iowa and his wife and daughter joined him a year later.13 With nearly all of their children living in Illinois and Iowa, Andrew decided to travel to Illinois in the late 1870s to visit his sons’ families. Catherine did not accompany him and remained in New York with their daughter Phebe’s family, who had by then moved to Old Chatham in Columbia County.14 On 16 March 1883, Andrew passed away at the age of 85. His sons William and George traveled to New York to attend the funeral.15 A few months later, Catherine passed away 24 June 1883 at Phebe’s residence in Old Chatham, Columbia County, New York. They are both buried in the North Chatham Cemetery in Chatham. They had ten children but only seven have been located:16 John Budd Spickerman was born about 1822 in Columbia County, New York.17 He married Mary E. "Polly" Rowley about 1845.18 John and Polly raised their family in Austerlitz, Columbia County, New York. Mary died in 1856 and was buried in the North Chatham Cemetery, North Chatham, Columbia County.19 They had the following children:
After Polly’s death, John decided to move to Illinois. There he remarried, taking Eunice Elvira Gallup as his second wife 29 January 1859 in Leyden, Cook County, Illinois.32 Unfortunately, they were not married very long because John died a few years later 30 July 1862 at his father-in-law William H. Gallup’s residence in Oak Ridge, Cook County, Illinois. His body was taken to New York for burial and where he is buried next to his first wife, Polly, in North Chatham Cemetery.33 John and Eunice only had one child during their brief marriage:
Mary Spickerman was born 20 December 1825 in Columbia County, New York.35 She married Elias DeGarno Briggs (1817-1907) 22 October 1845 in Dutchess County, New York.36 They resided in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York until their deaths. Elias died 10 October 1907, and Mary died at the age of 82 a week later 17 October 1907. They are both buried at Palmyra Cemetery.37 Mary and Elias had the following children:
William Spickerman was born in 1827 in Columbia County, New York.44 He married Sarah ? (1829-1898) after 1850 in New York.45 He and his family moved to Malta sometime after 1870 where he became a hotelkeeper.46 He died in 1898 and is buried in the Malta Cemetery with his wife.47 He and Sarah had the following children:
Phebe A. Spickerman was born 1829 in Columbia County, New York. She married Edward Martin Krum (1823-26 Aug 1892) 26 December 1861 at Grace Methodist Church in Nassau. Edward had been previously married to Phebe’s cousin Eliza Spickerman.51 They lived in Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY, and later Old Chatham, Columbia County, NY.52 Phebe died in 1919 and is buried with her husband Martin and his first wife, Eliza Spickerman. They had the following children:
James Nelson Spickerman was born 3 April 1831 in Albany, New York.54 He married Julia Ann Whaples 11 February 1860 at the 1st Methodist Episcopalian Church in Chicago, IL. More about James Nelson Spickerman will be discussed in the James Nelson Spickerman family branch. George Spickerman was born 14 October 1833 in Columbia County, New York.55 He was apparently the first brother to move to Illinois. However, he returned to New York to marry Annie Pulver (1842-1923). He and his wife resided in Malta.56 He died in 1906 and is buried in the Malta Cemetery with his wife.57 George and Annie only had one child:
Justus Spickerman was born in Columbia County, New York 20 October 1840. He received an academic education at the collegiate institute at Marion, Wayne County, New York. He contracted on early work for railroad companies for thirteen years. Justus married Carrie Hoag (10 May 1855-12 February 1947) 22 September 1875 in Nassau. In the spring of 1878, they moved to Danville Township, Worth County, Iowa where Justus stopped working on the railroad and became a farmer.59 Justus died 20 June 1902 in Manly, Worth County, Iowa.60 They had the following children:
