Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica hybrids) in Rhode Island

Crape myrtle in Rhode Island (8/98)

This page make take a little while to load on slower connections.

These late summer flowering shrubs/small trees are deciduous and quite winter hardy. A well drained soil and a full sun exposure will be to the plant's liking. There have been many more hardy botanical crosses of this colorful plant. The two pictured here are the "Hopi" variety and appear completely hardy in a cold zone 6 climate such as here.

Another Crape myrtle in RI (8/98)

Another picture of the same Crape myrtle "Hopi".

Even if the stems are damaged by a very cold winter, the plant blooms off of new growth anyway. Here they will remain shrub-like due to the cold climate, and seem to flower profusely regardless of what the previous winter had in store for the plants.

There are many other varieties of other cold hardy (versions) of these nice Crape myrtle plants. Hopefully they will become more known in this area. They bloom best in August here when little else is blooming in our area.

Notice the Eucalyptus in the background.........time for another web page for another hardy plant!
