Cold Hardy Trachycarpus Palms

Trachycarpus wagneranus in central Florida

This picture of a small Trachycarpus wagneranus was taken 9/98 in central Florida by myself. This palm is thought to be about as cold hardy as T. fortunei, some feel slightly more so perhaps.

This palm has smaller more rigid leaves, and as a result appears to be less damaged by strong winds.

Trachycarpus takil

Trachycarpus takil as pictured here to the left has been confused and also sold in the US as T. wagneranus. Hailing from the Western Himalayas is posseses great cold tolerance as well. It appears more closely releated to T. fortunei in appearance but with larger leaves. Palms are rare in cultivation, but this should increase in time.

Note--Even though this was labeled T. takil--I am not really convinced of that with this plant.

Below is a large picture of a Trachycarpus fortunei growing along side a Crape myrtle on the south side of my house in cold Rhode Island.
