| Aucuba japonica in Southern New England |
![]() |
Aucuba is a nice shrub which is rarely seen in Rhode Island. A variegated type (picture) as well as other green varieties make nice additions to the landscape as they are adaptable to lighting and soil conditions. This evergreen warmer climate plant does fine in the central and southern areas of Rhode Island, zones 6b-7a. |

To the left a picture of an Aucuba japonica in Smithfield RI from 12/00 after the first snow. It does quite well but is uncommon in this area. There are some other types to try with around the same hardiness. This plant has been in the ground for nearly 5 years and was actually a 5 leaf rooted cutting when I planted it in spring 1996!
