Castor Bean -- Ricinus communis

Castor bean plant in RI. Pic from 9/99. Notice how big it grew compared to the house! Loved by some, and not liked by others, this very fast growing plant from seed makes an impact on a cold climate garden. In cold climates it is grown as an annual, but in frost free areas it winds up being an evergreen tree-like shrub. It prefers full sun here and fertile moist well drained soil.

The picture on the left is from 9/99 before frost (which knocks it down)--but grew up to the gutter by frost later in October. This size was possible here due to starting seeds early in spring (not too early--they get "leggy" without full sun)--they need full sun, heat, moisture, and fertilization--grows like mad! I wish I had more and better pics of this plant!

Caution--Plant parts are poisonous--especially the coating over seeds the plant forms. Many times in the north it may not get to its fruiting cycle, but keep this in mind.

Good annual to try here and there.
