Growing Cold Hardy Figs in Rhode Island
| Some figs can be grown in
colder areas such as zone 6 Rhode Island. One of the most
cold hardy figs is this one, the Chicago Hardy. Even
during a below normal winter it will come alive and
spring back into the landscape in little time. It prefers
full sun, well drained soil, and don't over-do on the
fertilizer. Figs usually form as the nights begin to cool
in September, then are ripe usually from late Sept.
through October each year. A fun and tropical-ish
addition to a landscape! You can also easily grow many figs in large pots to be brought indoors in a cool frost-free area for the winter. There are other varieties of figs growable here. Mission fig, brown turkey, etc.. I hope to get more plants and/or photos of these this coming year. As usual, I will continue updating all my pages when I am able to give the latest to you. |
