To the left is a photo of a needle palm in my yard. Picture from 7/99. All other photos here are from plants in my yard in Rhode Island. |
| Commonly known as the needle palm, this shrub-like palm is the most cold-hardy palm and is also becoming quite rare. It is native to South Carolina, N. Florida, and into and around central Mississippi and other areas in the SE locally. It is usually found growing within woods and swamps growing in low moist locations. This very slow growing palm benefits from good summer heat to grow well. Also, a protected site from harsh winds and full sun is helpful. Prefers 3/4 a day of sun here for best greenery on the leaves it appears. |
