This dwarf palmetto is native to the southeast US and is very hardy to cold. It needs good summer heat to grow well. So in the north, it is best planted in a protected area which may radiate warmth. Near a foundation or a wall for example. Picture on the left taken 7/99. More pictures below from spring 1998 and a newer one from 11/00. Here is a picture from
late November 2000 of the same Sabal as pictured above. It does receive damage each winter, but not so much. As you can see, it is right on the house foundation (south exposure) along with a fig and Illicium anisateum. All hardy. With a small amount of the say "prime real" estate of microclimates-----these plants all live through.....The Sabal here grows around 2 new leaves/fronds per year here. But -- finally is actually starting to look like a palm! Not the best picture. I take more. |
