Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant redwood, Giant sequoia)

This tree is native to certain areas of the western US, and is rarely seen in southern New England. This is the tallest of the ones I have seen in my area. This tree is in Bristol, Rhode Island-- (I have seen one other in Smithfield RI in good shape, and is about 30 feet tall). This tree is around 95 feet tall, and grows about 1 to 1 1/2 feet per year in this climate -- slower than in its native range. The thick, fibrous, red-brown bark, and bluish sharp green leaves make it quite a striking tree. Sequoia sempervirens (Coastal redwood) I have not seen in this area and appears less hardy to this climate. Both are some of the world's largest trees when mature. I have heard of this tree being alive and well north of here at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston Mass. and also a tree in Manchester NH. |
