If you are U.S. citizen adopting in China you will be going to Guangzhou, no matter where your child is since you must go to the U.S. Consulate there. There are a lot of nice places to visit while there and a lot of good food to be eaten. One of the favorite pastimes of the residents there is eating - and they eat everything! Don't be surprised to see street vendors selling buckets of beetles which are supposed to be delicious when fried up. No thanks, I'm a vegetarian.  And, whatever you do, don't point at anything in a restaurant cage unless you would like it to end up on your plate.
