Appraisal for Student Intern, John Stanton
We accepted John as a library school intern knowing that we
intended to offer a rich learning experience; but little did we realize
what an
asset he would become!
John was given projects in cataloging, collection
development, and creating pathfinders.
He worked on them with great enthusiasm, and accomplished them
efficiently and effectively. His work
not only contributed to his learning curve, but was quite helpful for
our
library.
But where John really excelled was in his reference
work. I thought that an intern might be
ready to tackle reference work alone on the desk after about a month,
working
10 hours a week. In fact, John was able
after little more than a week! This was
a boon to us, because we were quite short on reference desk help. He literally “saved” us, and probably did
more for us than we did for him.
John is thorough in answering questions, is great with
electronic resources, and is quite approachable and helpful. I hope he stays with reference, because he
would be an excellent reference librarian.
John is a quick-study, and it has been easy to get him
up-to-speed
on the
print items.
In summary, John is the ideal intern: intelligent,
energetic, interested, reliable, and good with students.
He has my highest evaluation.
