The USA PATRIOT ACT, FISA, and PRIVACY

Description of Topic

The USA PATRIOT ACT is a law passed by Congress in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. It has had a sweeping effect on practices used by law enforcement agencies that can be used against not only suspected terrorists but people in general. FISA is the FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SURVEILLANCE ACT and is related to the PATRIOT ACT. The impact of the PATRIOT ACT on privacy is a major concern to several groups including librarians.

A new act (PATRIOT II) is expected to be proposed by Congress in 2005. Other legislation has also been proposed to modify parts of the PATRIOT ACT.
