Biography

I first started working with computers in 1975 as a freshman at El Cajon Valley High School. In 1985 I graduated from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) with a BA in Computer Science. From 1986 to 2001 I worked as an embedded software engineer at  QUALCOMM, SAIC (TRANSCORE), and Thermo Electron (GAMMA-METRICS).

In 2001 I decided that I had had enough of sitting in an office all day thinking about fixing software bugs. Libraries have been a life-long love of mine, and being a librarian would allow me to engage with and help people while utilizing my computer skills. I really wanted a job where I felt like I was helping people.

From 9/2002 to 8/2004 I volunteered at the Mission Valley Branch Library (a beautiful and spacious library) and determined that working in a library was right for me.

In summer of 2003 I entered the University of Arizona's (UA) School of Information Resources & Library Science (SIRLS). I graduated with my MLIS in December of 2004. I received the Outstanding Student Award for distance students from the faculty of SIRLS at graduation. I wrote several papers while I was in school that you can look at if you like.

During Fall 2004 I interned at the Grossmont College Library where I received a well rounded introduction to being a librarian. I received a great evaluation from my on-site advisor. This internship taught me that I would love to work in an academic library.

In Spring and Fall of 2004 I served as a teaching assistant at UA specializing in WebCT software assistance. I also designed the technical (WebCT) aspects of my Cataloging class in Fall 2004 and served as an unofficial TA for that class.

I have now found a part-time position as a reference librarian at Grossmont College. And I am continuing my search for a full-time permanent position working at a community college library.
