Damaging Ice Storm in Wichita, Kansas 4-5 January 2005
Photos by Jon Davies (shot on 6 January 2005)
< ice gleams on power lines in Westlink area
< typical Westlink neighborhood street
< notice large ice "thorns" on small
limbs
< another ice ravaged Westlink street
< many streets were impassable with tree debris
< my neighborhood street sign (off N. Ridge Rd.)
< my backyard
< my only tree (poor little guy)
< my back patio
< the lake behind my home froze over in 1 night
< sunlit steam rose from icy lake, air temp 6 deg
F
< ice laden tree in Swanson Park (off Maize Rd.)
< more twisted trees in Swanson Park
< many trees in Swanson Park were badly mangled
< the park will never quite look the same
< more ice "thorns" from heavy freezing
rain
< many pounds of ice destroyed more trees
< this iced-over limb had buds from last weekend's
60 deg F weather
< this mangled tree was in Sedgwick Co. Park
< many trees looked like an F1-F2 tornado hit them
< others looked like a giant had squashed them
< most trees were burdened by 100's of pounds of
ice
Sadly, most will never be the same...
This storm produced more tree damage than any other ice event I've seen in Wichita.
