The Ruffner Papers

August 1, 1793; Ruffner purchase of Cunningham land

As Joseph retained this deed/note, I assume Jospeh Stover never paid Joseph Ruffner the two hundred sixty pounds Vlirginia currency and therefore retained title to the land.The note reads as follows:

1st August 1793. This day by virtue of a Deed of Trust from Walter Cunningham to Joseph Ruffner, both of Shenandoah County, was sold at public sale to Joseph Stover of Stovertown of said county three tracts of land vis. one tract containing 197 acres on which said Cunningham now resides - one lying on the southwest side of Calebs Run, the number of acres unknown - and one tract containing 50 acres adjoining the foresaid tract of 197 acres and the lands of William Stover - - for the sume of two hundred and sixty pounds Virginia currency to be paid by the said Stover the the said Ruffner on or before the first day of October next ensuing the date hereof.
