Otto Severt (standing in front of horse...he is also smoking a pipe) in his late teens (circa 1898-1899) taken at Connor's Camp Number 6, in Auburndale, Wisconsin. Also pictured is Robert Connor Jr., standing to the right of Otto. Photo from the Doug Severt Collection.

The following images are pictures that are painted on a cross-cut saw that depict scenes from the logging camps and were painted from original pictures from the collection of Roy Severt.  The scenes depict the camp area, a steam train and the last scene is the "ice sleigh" used for nightly icing of the trails.  Otto Severt is standing on the top right. The small one-horse sleigh was used by Vernon Baltus to get around and supervise operation of the camp.  The actual sleigh is on display at the Camp 5 Logging Museum in Laona, Wisconsin.

"Oh, husband, remember the land you must clear

Will cost you the labor of many a year.

With horses and cattle and provisions to buy,

Why you'll hardly get started before you must die"

From Folk Songs out of Wisconsin

Many other photo's are available of family members working in the woods during this era. If you would like to see what is available, contact Doug at dsevert@cox.net
