On 23 October , the Crystal Room of the prestigious Omaha Athletic Club was the black-tie setting of the Maiwand Jezails Millennium Conclave. Commandant Richard D. Lesh led fifty Jezails in the canonical toasts. Members were then piped to dinner by Bruce McMorris, our Scottish piper in full dress.
After dinner cigars and twenty-five -year-old cognac were passed and our host, Robert Cryne, unveiled and presented the Maiwand Jezails with a large painting, "The Saving of the Guns a the Battle of Maiwand". The painting will become an icon at our meetings along with the 200-year-old Jezail rifle.
'
His Last Bow was the theme for the evening and naturally the outstanding scholarly paper entitled, "His Last Bow Wow" was delivered by Samuel Copper. Other outstanding papers were presented by David Landis, David Wallace and Robert Cryne.
The CommandantŐs call to arms was obeyed by Jezails from the distant outposts of North Carolina, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Texas, along with Paul Smedergaard, B.S.I. and Ed Christenson from Wisconsin, Fred Levin , B.S.I. from Chicago, and J.S. Berry , B.S.I.
Our Omaha team headed by Robert Cryne worked for two months to assure a perfect evening. The Dinner was in every sense a true gourmet feast. Our host ( Robert Cryne) presented all in attendance with a handsome ribbon-hung, die-struck bronze medal, especially struck to commemorate the Jezail Conclave and "His Last Bow", with the Master on the obverse.
The Millennium marks the thirty-seventh years of the Maiwand Jezails and more than one hundred dinners. We have no officers, dues, quizzes, reports, ballots or women in our Scion, thus maintaining harmony and the highest fun factor , along with the longest time slot for canonical toasts.
Canonically,
Richard D, Lesh B.S.I. , Commandant
Maiwand Jezails
