How to use ANY Headphones

with the Blackberry Pearl 8100

There are many “Stereo Headphone Adapters” sold on ebay and elsewhere
that claim to allow you to use regular stereo headphones with the Blackberry.

Most of these headphone adapters do NOT work with the Blackberry, and are
a complete waste of your money!  I found this out myself the hard way when
I purchased such an adapter on eBay that specifically claimed to allow the use
of any standard stereo headphones, only to find that not only did it not provide
a stereo output to the headphones, it would not even silence the Blackberry’s
built-in speaker when the adapter and headphones were plugged in!

Also note that the “2.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cellphone adapter” sold at local

Radio Shack stores performs identically to the one described above, in spite
of the fact that store personel will likely sell you one for the Blackberry!

The link below is my solution, and provides the plans to correctly wire up any
standard stereo headphones to a 4-conductor 2.5mm plug or to build an
adapter for the Blackberry to allow the use of any headphones that are already
equipped with a standard 3-conductor 3.5mm stereo plug.  The photo below
shows the “mini-adapter” I built for my Pearl, and it works great with every pair
of stereo headphones I have tried with it.  Here is a link to a PDF file with the
instructions to build your own:
