First, go to the Medibuntu url, http://www.medibuntu.org/, then select the Repository Howto heading.

Clicking on that brings up the "Community Documentation" page.  We're going to install from here.  Bring up a terminal (located in accessories, this might be a good time add it to the task bar, you just drag it there).  when you have started the terminal, copy the code on the web page under Adding the Repository, and paste it into the terminal and press enter.  You will be asked to provide the user password; type in the password and press the enter key.

A bunch of text about installing will zip by.  If all goes well in 20 seconds or so it will stop at the user prompt (a "$").

Next we need to get dvds to play.  Move down the web page to Playing Encrypted DVDs.  We installed everything in the previous step, so we need to copy the "sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2" line to the terminal and press the ented key.  Don't worry about removing the two header packages.

Next we move on to the Playing Non-Native Media Formats section.  Copy and paste the script for 32-bit or 64-bit codecs, depending upon your machine architecture.  Paste this into the terminal and press the return key.

This concludes the Medibuntu portion.  Restart the computer, if you care to, to ensure that the changes have been made.  Then we will use the Synaptic Package Manager to add some programs.

If you click on System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager, you will be asked for your password.  Enter your password.  The screen should show all programs in an alphabetical order.  We are going to add a few programs to provide better functionality and tools.  You add programs by right clicking on them and then checking Mark For Installation.  Let's do just the gnome-based ftp program as an example.  Use the search function or scroll down to "gftp-gtk", right click on it and then check mark for installation.  Notice that the popup window lists a second program (gftp-common) as also needing to be installed.  Click on Mark, and then click on Apply in the top bar, and click on Apply again when the popup window appears.  When it is finished downloading and installing the two programs, you will get a pop up telling you that the changes have been applied and that you can close the window.  Do so.  You will now have gftp available as an internet application to ftp files to and from other computers (useful for maintaining web pages).

Next, let's add all of the uninstalled gstreamer plugins.  I normally add gstreamer0.XX-alsa, gstreamer0.XX-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.XX-fluendo-mp3, gstreamer0.XX-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.XX-plugins-bad-multiverse, gstreamer0.XX-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.XX-plugins-ugly-multiverse, gstreamer0.XX-pulseaudio, gstreamer0.XX-schroedinger, gstreamer0.XX-tools (in not already installed), and gstreamer0.XX-x.  Click on Apply in the top tool bar, click on Apply in the popup window, and click on close when it says that it is finished.

One last step is to add the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" which has mp3, java runtime, and flash support plus Microsoft font support.

Let's add a couple more things, mplayer, which sometimes works better than the gnome video player, and, vlc, another audio/video player.  Use the method used previously with the package manager.

That should provide the core programs.

Next is changing the look and feel to suit the new user.  Put icons for the programs that they will be using (ask what they expect to do with the computer) on a taskbar or on the desktop.  (use the launcher for desktop apps, drag to task bars).
