Cybershells

Cybershells are basically robots without software. The sophisticated software required to animate a cybershell is called an Infomorph, a being of digital intelligence.  Cybershells are designed for a multitude of uses.  Any job or function that could be done by a computer is likely to have a cybershell built to do it.

Features: Feature: Complexity 5-7 computer.
Date: 2071                    Cost: $30,000 + computer.
Description: Aerorovers are triphibian utility cybershells.  First developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA, they took part in the early unmanned exploration of Titan, and their more advanced descendents are still in use as a cheap all-terrain mobot favored by planetologists, pipeline workers, and teletourists.  Most kids growing up on Titan have remotely-piloted an aerorover at one time or another - they own, rent, and even race them.
A typical Aerorover is a triangular-frame cybershell consisting of three thick-walled helium-filled balloons (each about 5 feet in diameter), all joined by a skeletal frame to a single central module, which houses the power plant, ducted fan propulsion unit, steering mechanism, electric drivetrain, and payload.  The three balloons not only provide lift, but also act as an undercarriage (serving as airbags in the event of a hard lading), as floats, and as wheels.  A standard accessory is an arm that can anchor the unit to the ground or pick up objects.  The balloons are over-inflated so that in the event of a puncture, the remaining two balloons will be sufficient to keep the vehicle buoyant.
In aerobot mode, the aerorover can fly at any altitude of up to five miles, venting helium as needed to control its descent.  Since this will eventually flatten its balloon wheels, the aerobot is fitted with a reinflation system that allows the replacing of helium in its balloons with atmospheric gas, ensuring the balloon wheels can remain inflated to run on the ground when all the helium is vented.  The aerorover has sufficient helium for between 1-4 weeks of operation, depending on the amount of maneuvering it performs.
In rover mode, the standard aerorover is capable of speeds across Titan terrain of 10-15 mph.  It can clamber over obstacles up to 2' high, float in Titan's lakes, or cross muddy terrain with ease.  The power plant is sufficient for one week of surface operations.
The aerorover is the size of a small car, but weighs only 50 lbs. (7lbs. on titan).

Date: 2090                    Cost:
$230,000 + computer.
Description: This asteroid mining mobot resembles a cross between a giant mechanized earthworm and a centipede.  Its specialized sensors allow it to detect ore deposits.  Its powerful rotary jaws and diamond-tipped legs allow it to anchor itself in microgravity while efficiently tunneling through the loose regolith of an asteroid's surface in quest of suitable ores.  The mining worm actually ingests rock, breaking it down with its jaws, then passing the crushed matter through a "digestive tract" in which internal grinders, microbots and magnetic fields are used to separate useful ore from worthless rock.  Waste materials are blasted out its rear end as rock dust (into the open if necessary, or through an attached "catheter" pipe leading to a collection site).  Useful ore is stored in an expanding stomach sac until it can reach a smelter, dump truck, or appropriate storage facility.  A typical example is the THI-701 Mukade, a reliable 35-year old design from Tenzan Heavy Industries.  Its stomach can house up to three times its own mass in ore.  Used in hostile environments like Io or Europa, and by the military, this is a larger and heavier model with thicker legs and a much tougher carapace.  15' long, 1000 lbs. (empty).

Description: The MCS-52 is the most-used light combat/police cybershell outside of the Fifth Wave world. Based on a Chinese design nearly half a century old, the MCS-52 integrates easily with human/bioroid units, including sharing equipment and weapons. The standard MCS-52 has a few extraneous features, keeping the price and production complexity down to a level approachable even by poor nations. There are dozens of local variants design for particular needs. The standard MCS-52 appears as a dark gray metal/carbon-fiber humanoid.

Disadvantages:  Cybershell [-8]; Maintenance (Mechanic: Robotics, 1 person, monthly) [-2]; Mistaken Identity [-5]; No Sense of Smell/Taste [-5]; Social Stigma: Valuable Property [-10]
Features: Complexity 5-7 small computer.; Feature: 8'0" tall, 350 lb.
Date: 2064.                             Cost: $150,000 + computer.
Description: A later design in the series, the MCS-64 is a heavier model intended for use in assault groups. Too lightly armored for the modern battlefield, but too large to integrate well with light military and police units, the MCS-64 appear most often in the arsenals of governments whose main opposition is their own people. Dozens are available on the underground weapons market at any moment, at prices well below production cost. It's main advantage - aside from price - is the combination of an integral Xuan Feng combat rifle and increased strength. The typical kit for the MCS-64 is a heavy weapon (recoilless rifle or, where available, an AMR) with the integral Xuan Feng as a back-up/anti-personnel weapon. There are few variants on the basic MCS-64 model; most changes are simply a replacement of the Xuan Feng with a more modern weapon system.

Description: These robotic autonomous tactical systems are fighting machines optimized for combat in little or not gravity on small bodies and in spacecraft and space stations.  Vosper Babbage's Cyclops is a typical example.  A modification of an earlier machine built for jungle warfare (see Jungle RATS), it is employed for armed reconnaissance in spacecraft or stations, where its small size and zero-gravity maneuverability gives it a great advantage.  The Cyclops is a 10" diameter sphere with four multi-jointed limbs.  The armored sphere houses the brain, power plant, gas reserve, and a cold-gas thruster for zero-gee maneuver, with exhaust ports spaced about the body.  A single "eye" in the body's center acts as a lens for a combined tactical laser and ladar.  (An armored eyelid can blink shut if necessary.)  Each of the four highly-flexible arms can also function as a leg, and is equipped with a six-fingered hand.  Half the fingers end in suction pads; others have optical sensors to see around corners.  3' tall; 80 lbs.

Waste materials are blasted out its rear end a rock dust (into the open if necessary, or through an attached "catheter" pipe leading to a collection site). 15' long, 420 lbs. Description: Many spacers wear light vacc suits as fatigues, but the helmet is awkward to carry and easy to trip over if left lying about.  Stowing it in a suit locker risks not having it handy when a sudden emergency occurs.  To meet this perceived need, Tenzan Heavy Industries offers the GearHead.  It serves as a rigid nanocomposite vacc-suit helmet, and can clamp itself onto any standard space suit or sealed armor neck.  It is also a cybershell with four retractable legs, two ending in manipulator hands and two in nitrogen gas jets for zero-G maneuvers.  With appropriate AI, the GearHead can handle maintenance or domestic tasks until it is time to suit up, locating its owner if they become separated and if necessary attaching itself should he be incapacitated.  3 lbs., 1' wide.

Description: The Shakoosh is the most common body for SAI citizens of the Caliphate. The manufacturer, Amman Cybertechnologies, has recently started producing it for export. With four legs, a 4' cylinder rising from it, and four arms (each with 180 degree of freedom, set 90 degrees apart) set halfway up the cylinder, the Shakoosh is decidedly non-humanoid, a requirement in observant Muslim nations. Its four legs give it great maneuverability, and the sight ring around the top of its main body allows it a 360 degree view of the world. 90% of the Caliphate's SAI citizens use a Shakoosh as their primary body. Most use body decorations to individualize their appearance.

It is physically delicate and weak, but very fast even when confined to the ground. In the air, it can reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour, its mobility limited only by the requirements of winged flight. It has two arms, with an electroshock device installed in one (treat as a shock glove, TS155) and a pneumatic drug injector in the other; these are generally used as non-lethal weapons in defense of the robot’s owner. Cargo compartments in the body and each wing are designed to carry up to 3 lbs. of microbots, which can be delivered by the cybershell in either waking or flying modes. If the wingbot stays on the ground it can stretch out its battery charge for up to 30 hours. The batteries are depleted after only about two hours of flight. 45lb. 3’ long.
