Parahumans
Parahumans are products of species gengineering, and incorporate nonhuman DNA sequences. They are people that were genetically engineered prior to
birth. Many typical human deficiencies have been edited out or blocked, and many desirable traits have been enhanced. Most parahumans are designed
for specific environments or tasks.

Date: 2078
Cost: $176,000
Description: This is a cold-adapted version of GenTech Pacifica's popular Aquamorph line (p. TS116) that is widely used in both hemispheres - the company is considering a variant adapted for Mars but so far demand is small. Arctic aquamorphs are distinguished from their temperate cousins by their huskier build and relatively short limbs; their bulk out of the water is seen as a minor hindrance but not a design flaw. Their ability to maintain a high body
temperature works almost too well - they are very uncomfortable in any environment above 60F and can suffer heatstroke above 80F.

Date: 2077 Cost:
$167,000
Description: Chiroptian-series parahumans have a number of bat genes spliced
into their genotype. They have large, pointed ears, short silky fur, and
sharp teeth. Like bats, they have natural sonar, and they can fly by
unfolding the large wing membranes on their arms. However, they cannot use
their arms for any other purpose while flying.
When Luna City was being constructed, Biotech Euphrates asked for the inclusion of a large dome where its
young Chiroptian parahumans could live an fly. Around 1,600 Chiroptians
now live in Luna City. Biotech Euphrates is evaluating this genotype for
any unforeseen problems, and runs periodic medical checks on all Chiroptian
residents. While the Chiroptians were born and raised in a higher gravity
to strengthen their bones, they were all moved here when they were between five
and eight years old.
The Chiroptians are a modification of the experimental Camazotz parahumans. They were originally created amidst
predictions that the renewed Mars Terraforming project would give Mars a dense,
earthlike atmosphere as early as 2110. In a bold public relations move,
Biotech Euphrates decided to create flying parahumans that could inhabit this
new world.
Unfortunately, these early predictions proved incorrect. The Chiroptians cannot fly or even live on Mars without additional biomods, and
even the most optimistic predictions indicate that it will be ore than 50 years
before air pressure on Mars will have risen sufficiently high to allow them to
soar through the Martian skies. Several geneticists on the Chiroptian
design team feared that the terraforming predictions were too optimistic and
made certain that the first generation of Chiroptians would be long-lived enough
to enjoy live on Mars, even if there were serious delays. Some of these
Chiroptians have emigrated to Titan or have found jobs in the larger low-g and
zero-g space colonies. However, many remain in Luna City and hope to
eventually fulfill their destiny in the skies of Mars.

Temperature Tolerance +5 [5]; Scales [1]
Disadvantages: Skinny [-5]; Unnatural Feature +3 [-3]
Features: Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects; Taboo Trait: Mental Instability; Transgenic Features: Catlike eyes, which reflect light at night, light coat of
scales.
Date: 20?? Cost:
$???,000.
Description: Drylanders were designed to live comfortably in some of the world’s most arid regions, tending wilderness preserves or assisting in
desert-reclamation projects. They appear nearly human from a distance, but have a number of transgenic features that become apparent up close. The type’s
metabolism has been carefully altered to conserve water and deal with wind-blown dust. The large eyes have been radically modified, giving them keen night vision
and protecting them with a nictitating membrane. As a result, Drylanders can function quite well in the cool desert night, and many of them prefer a
nocturnal existence.
Drylanders were first developed in the Untied States. Many of the subspecies still live in the southwestern U.S., but others have spread to desert an steppe
zones all over the world. The largest communities today are in Western Australia and Northern Africa, where major desert-reclamation projects are underway.

Description: Officially, the Guardian parahuman template never existed. Just before the Pacific War, Chinese propaganda claimed that the template was being
developed as a product of the TSA’s “Special Projects” division. The design was supposedly part of an attempt to create a genetic elite to rule over humanity.
TSA leadership denied the charge, and Chinese officials never produced proof for the world community. Nevertheless, rumors persist that a number of Guardians
were actually conceived, and may have grown to maturity in hiding since the end of the Pacific War. If rumors are correct, the Guardians (the name comes from Plato’s Republic) were
engineered for two major goals. The first was natural durability. Guardians were to be slightly faster and more robust than unmodified humans, with
cardiovascular modifications to make them fit and tough. The second goal was mastery of other human beings. Their mental balance was designed for personal
pride and a willingness to command others. Physically attractive, with pleasant voices, they would be engaging from a distance or over a telecom channel. In
person, they would be magnetic, the result of glands releasing dominance and sexual pheromones. These glands would not become functional until after puberty,
but they would be under the Guardian’s conscious control.

Features: Early Maturation; No Appendix; Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects;
Taboo Trait: Mental Instability
Date: 20?? Cost:
$???,000.
Description: Pushing the limits of genetic technology, the Herakles series represents one of the most elaborate Homo superior designs available in 2100.
The first cohorts are only now approaching adulthood. The expense of the genotype (and its apparent problems) has limited the type’s appeal. There are
only about 10,000 Herakles parahumans alive, most of them in Greece.
The muscles, skeleton, and nervous system have all been engineered for maximum performance. The immune system and overall biochemistry have been broadly
modified to allow virtual immunity to toxins, infectious disease, and cancers. Several changes to cell structures allow dramatic extension of lifespan.
Finally, modifications to the brain allow a Herakles to get by with very little sleep.
The sum of these modifications appears to have stretched the state of the art in human gengineering to its limit. Next-generation designs will probably
supplement genetic alteration with symbiotic viruses or other techniques. For now, the Herakles is plagued with minor metabolic and psychological problems.

Description: The Hippolyta genotype is a modification of the Ziusudra
parahuman, produced under license from Biotech Euphrates by Crane Genetics.
Hippolytas are physically similar to Ziusudra, although their heightened
metabolism can sometimes give them away. Hippolyta-series parahumans must
eat twice as much as normal humans to maintain their health. Hippolyta
parahumans are fast, strong, and extremely durable. They excel as fitness
instructors, athletes, intelligence agents, law enforcement officers, and
security personnel. However, almost half of the customers who request this
genotype are extremely wealthy woman who simply wish their daughters to be
strong, powerful, and able to defend themselves in all situations. There
are currently around 4,000 Hippolyta parahumans, about half of them living in
Margaret.

Radiation Tolerance (Divisor 5) [10]; Resistant to Sickness (+3) [5]
Disadvantages: Skinny [-5]
Features: Home Gravity of 0 G; Increase height by up to 12" over the norm
for the lowered ST, but weight is 70% of normal; Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects
Date: 2082
Cost: $70,000
Description: This parahuman design was produced
by a team at Kaneda Station, working in parallel to the group that produced the
Tennin II. Manipulation of homeobox genes led to the grasping prehensile
toes of the Tennin series being modified into actual arms, hence the nickname "Kumo"
(Japanese for spider). They received a mixed reception. Fewer
parents chose to have Kumo babies, partly because the change was more alien.
However, they have proven popular among Gypsy Angel and freehauler families, and
are also common in the Kaneda Station community on Ceres. While they
represent only 12% of the overall Duncanite population, 45% of the Gypsy Angels
are Kumo.

Mars Adapt ("Red Bear") 34 points
Attribute Modifiers: HT +1 [10]
Secondary Characteristic Modifiers: FP +2 [6]
Advantages: Andraste [6]; Reduced Consumption 2 (Water Only -50%) [2]; Nictitating Membrane 1 [1]; Temperature Tolerance +4
(-29F to 70F) [4]; Damage Resistance 2 (Tough Skin -40%) [6]
Disadvantages: Overweight [-1]
Features: Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects; Home Gravity of 0.38G
Date: 2082
Cost: $156,000
Description: These parahuman gene sequences are available from Colonial Genetics and Xiao Chu. An "adapt" is suited to walking around Mars as if it were temperate Earth; they can breathe the air, enjoy the cold, survive for long periods without water, and aren't seriously inconvenienced by most sandstorms. They have tougher skin, thicker body hair, and are noticeably padded with fat. They are occasionally known by the nickname "red bears." Adapts are common, making up some 10% of the population. They have a definite cultural identity, seeing Mars as their home. Most other
inhabitants, in their eyes, are guests (though usually welcome ones). Many are, or claim to be, preservationists. Almost all have a genuine love for Mars, and are happiest out enjoying its beauty.

Disadvantages: Bad Temper (12) [-10]; Overweight [-1]; Sleepy (50%) [-16]; Staid [-1]
Features: No Appendix; Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects
Date: 20?? Cost:
$???,000.
Description: This parahuman type was one of the first human subspecies to be created. The type borrows a great deal from ursid genetics, giving it thick body
hair (effectively fur), strong resistance to cold and a moderate ability to hibernate. Side effects of the modifications include a bear like temperament and
an increased need for sleep year-round. Mishas can function without special clothing or equipment in temperatures as low as -75 Degrees F. When the
temperatures get below -60 F, however, they feel a strong urge to find shelter and hibernated. This occasionally helps them to survive extreme conditions, but
it can be inconvenient when there is work to be done. Drugs and other treatments can mitigate the hibernation urge, but have undesirable side effects. Misha
parahumans were first developed in Russia, and are still most common in Siberia. Mishas (and the nearly identical Kodiak type) have spread to Alaska, Greenland,
northern Scandinavia, Nunavut, and Antarctica. Although their tolerance for warmth is almost as good as an unmodified human’s, they do prefer colder
climates and are rarely found in the tropics. They find employment in all kinds of cold-weather industries.

Zero-G Bone Degeneration [5]; Radiation Tolerance (Divisor 2) [5]; Resistant to Disease (+3 HT)
[5]
Disadvantages: Skinny [-5]
Skills: Free Fall (A) DX+1 [4]
Features: Feature: Home Gravity 0G, Increase Height by up to 8" over norm
for ST, but weight is 75% of normal.
Date: 2050
Cost: $54,000
Description: These are representative of the very first attempt at a
design of a human adapted for microgravity without bone and muscle wasting.
They are a more austere design than the Tennin (p. THS117), lacking the modified
toes and full radiation protection. They also lack the longevity genes,
and unlike later models, are more prone to the full range of human genetic
problems (no Taboo Traits). Proto-Tennin make up only 5% of the Duncanite
population, but are significant, as many of the first generation of Duncanite
children are presently in positions of influence.
Few Proto-Tennin were
deliberately born after the more ambitious Tennin genotype (available after 2057) was proven free of
dangerous recessive genes or flaws. Although some Proto-Tennin were the
offspring of Proto-Tennin parents, most parents with this genotype used genetic
engineering to ensure they had full-fledged Tennin babies.

Disadvantages: Legless [-30]
Features: Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects; Taboo Trait: Unaffected by SAD.
Date: 2087
Cost: $176,000
Description: Bhuiyan Genetics' Purushagor is a radical parahuman design that replaces the legs with a fishlike lower body and tail. Purushagor are virtually unknown outside the TSA, but are common in Bangladeshi aquatic habitats, and some have found their way into settlements off Burma and in the South China Sea. They do not require any sp0ecial environmental controls on the surface, but will be uncomfortable in cold environments and require some sort of exoskeleton to be fully mobile - their tail is strong enough to stand up on, but they can only move by hopping, or crawling like a seal.

unless corrected by extensive early-childhood nanotherapy (costs $25,000).
Date: 2085
Cost: $109,000
Description: The new Tennin III are the first Avatar Klusterkorp designs
optimized for abnormally high intelligence, particularly in creativity.
They make up 2% of the Duncanite population. Unfortunately, the design
team was a bit too ambitious, and overlooked a brain chemistry imbalance that
has resulted in the second generation of Tennin III suffering neurological
problems; this can be mitigated by childhood nanotherapy (subsumed in the
template), but overall health remains lower. Avatar is working to correct
this error in the Tennin IV, but it's too early to tell how well they've
succeeded.

Description: This template is a look at the "perfect" genemod; most
serious blueprints include features very much like this. These particular
characteristics come from stolen GenTech Pacifica planning scenarios regarding
its long-awaited follow-up to the Metanoia-series upgrade. Records
accompanying the template state that the design has not yet been implemented, as
it includes untested life-extension techniques. There are occasional
stories, however, that the template was implemented several years ago, and a
small number of test subjects have been born. These Utopias exhibit
strange behavior - rumors range from depression and suicidal fantasies to
hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and even telepathy - and GenTech Pacifica does
not want to announce the design until the bugs are worked out. The company
denies the very existence of the Utopia template, let alone any experimental
subjects. Observers note that if stories of radical live-extension
technology proved true. GenTech Pacifica would likely come to dominate the
genetic-upgrade industry.
Most credible geneticists dismiss the notion
that a body can be made to age normally to maturation and then stop aging
permanently, at least given current biological knowledge. A more plausible
version replaces Unaging with Extended Lifespan +3 [6] and Longevity [2] for a modified
template total of 318 points. While a template using these characteristics
is not now on the market, it is likely to be available within a few years.

Description: Xiao Chu created this pantropic parahuman design for Mars
settlement. They're similar to an Alpha-series upgrade, but have modified
lungs and biochemistry for surviving on the surface with minimal protection, as
well as radical hormonal and reproductive cell genemods. The latter
reflect Rust China's desire to increase its population, but have also led to
accusations that Xiao Chu is "turning humans into bioroids." Rust China
offers economic subsidies to colonists who choose to have Yousheng children.

Attribute Modifiers: HT +1 [10]
Advantages: Andraste [6]; Resistant to Sickness (+3) [5]
Features: Altered Sex Ratio (2:1 f:m); Feature: Home Gravity 0.38G; Taboo Trait: Genetic Defects; Taboo Trait: Unattractiveness;
Taboo Trait: Mental Instability
Date: 2058
Cost: $50,000.
Description: This was the first Mars-optimized parahuman design, replaced in later years by the Yousheng (p. TS117) and similar models. At the time it was created, even the modifications included in the Andraste biomod were insufficient to survive the low-pressure, low-oxygen atmosphere of Mars, but the forward-thinking designers knew that it would not be too many more years before the Zhiminde parahumans could breathe Martian air. Just as for the Yousheng, the reproductive modifications ensure rapid population growth.
