Karla Johnston, RDCS, RVT
California Triple Crown Gold Thousand Mile Club Winner 2007
Hi! I'm Karla Johnston. I am an avid cyclist living in San Diego County, Southern California. I hope you will check out some of the links on my page and support my friends.
Big Ring Cyclery in La Mesa. Tell Joe and Manny that you're a friend of Karla. They carry a huge selection of road, mountain, and track bikes and provide the best customer service anywhere. If you want personal service and custom parts, Big Ring is the place to go!
Dr. Nancy Designs - Dr. Nancy designs unique t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, and other cool gifts with cycling designs, obstetrics and gynecology designs, maternity and baby clothes, and all sorts of fun stuff. It's an eclectic mix of cool stuff. You're sure to find something you like.
California Triple Crown - Chuck Bramwell runs the California Triple Crown website. The California Triple Crown is an elite cycling event. Winners must finish three Double Century bike rides in a single year. That's 200 miles of cycling in under 18 hours, with anywhere from 5,000 to 18,000 feet of mountain climbing! Thousand Mile Club winners complete FIVE (5) Doubles in one year. I completed my first Double in March of 2007 - the Solvang Spring Double, and won my first Triple Crown and Thousand Mile Club that year. Not bad for a forty-something woman who started cycling in September of 2005! Check out my accomplishments at Karla Johnston Triple Crown History.
Here's a picture of my bird, Sofia.

These are my kitties, Sarah and Skippy:

I couldn't have done it all without my coach, Darryl MacKenzie. This picture is from the 2007 Grand Tour Double Century in Malibu, CA, when I earned my Thousand Mile Club designation.

Darryl is a USA Cycling Certified Coach and an endurance cyclist who has completed 28 Double Centuries and 7 California Triple Crowns. Every year he teaches a Stationary Training Program at the Trek Superstore in La Mesa. In addition to his Stationary Training program, Darryl has an annual on the road training program for cyclists to who want to complete their first Double Century or achieve the California Triple Crown.
He has coached cyclists to Double Century successes with:
First Double 11 Cyclists
Triple Crowns 15 Awards
Total Doubles 61 Completed
Every Cyclist who completed Darryl's Double Century training program has finished each and every double entered.
You can contact Darryl at darrylmackenzie@cox.net
My other coach is Sean Burke, who helped me a lot at the beginning of my cycling career. I didn't know very much about cycling and he taught me a lot. You can check out his website at Cycling Science.
If you ever need a good lawyer, my friend Phil Coats is an excellent attorney and an accomplished bicycle racer. He races for the San Diego Cyclo-Vets, which is one of the two clubs I ride with. You can contact Phil at 619-231-8941. Here is Phil riding the Time Trial at the 2007 San Diego Cyclo-Vets Omnium.

My other club is the North County Cycle Club in Northern San Diego County. NC3 has rides scheduled during the week and on weekends for riders of all skill levels. My first rides were with North County and I could barely make it up the hill. But the club president and my friend Dee stayed with me and within a few weeks I was keeping up. Great people, beautiful rides.

This was my first century ride, the 2006 Palm Springs Century:

I am an echocardiographer and vascular ultrasonographer. I work in hospitals and doctors' offices, performing ultrasounds of the heart and blood vessels. I got my training at the Grossmont College Cardiovascular Technology Program. It's an excellent program. After two years, you have the training needed to become a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), or both, like me!
Albert J. Sharf, MD, FACC is both a cyclist and an excellent cardiologist. You can contact him at (619) 470-7700 655 Euclid Ave, National City, CA.

Karla and Cycling Legend Gordy Shields

Both Karla and Gordy started cycling after injuries stopped them from playing tennis. And they both started cycling late in life. Gordy is a three-time National Individual Time Trial Champion, and still cycling competitively at 90! Karla's goal is to grow up to be just like Gordy!
