The official opening of the Parada del Sol in Scottsdale Arizona is marked each year by the traditional arrival of The Hashknife Pony Express Riders. Parada del Sol is billed as America’s largest horse-drawn parade. The Hashknife Pony Express tradition started in 1958 and continues as the oldest officially sanctioned Pony Express ride in the world covering some 235 miles. In 2005, a band of 35 extraordinary riders and horses, all sworn in as official mail messengers, teamed up in groups of two and handed off mail relay style each mile starting in the historic city of Holbrook, Arizona. The riders are members of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Posse, The Scottsdale Jaycees, and invited guests.
