Havasu Campgrounds Regulations

A newer version of this page is at this link.

The following is from the Camping and Entry Permit issued by the Havasupai Tourist Enterprise for the 1997 hiking club trip to Havasu Canyon.

In consideration for receiving this permit, I and those in my party, agree to the following:

  1. We agree to obey all laws and regulations of the Havasupai Tribe and the terms of this permit, which include:
  2. We agree to pack out all trash from the Campgrounds to the parking area at Hualapai Hilltop.
  3. We consent to the jurisdiction of the Havasupai Tribal Court as the forum for the resolution of any civil disputes arising from our presence on the Havasupai Reservation and/or use of Tribal resources and/or services. Any person violating any provision of this Permit or other Tribal laws or regulations may be subject to fines, immediate expulsion from the Havasupai Reservation and/or seizure of property as security for payment of potential fines or other financial obligations of the Tribe. Any person expelled from the Reservation for violations shall not receive a refund of any fees.
  4. The Havasupai Tribe retains its sovereign immunity and is not responsible for damage or injury to person or property, from any cause whatsoever.

Our reservation is rugged and can be dangerous. Please read and abide by the following:

  1. Due to the grave danger and extreme risk, campers are NOT to dive off of any of the waterfalls, cliffs, or trees.
  2. Climbing any cliffs, rocks or canyon walls on the Havasupai Reservation is absolutely prohibited.
  3. Please stay away from any caves or mines; they are extremely dangerous with unstable vertical shafts.
  4. Hikers are to stay on prescribed trails as outlined on the map furnished by the tourist office. Please avoid private trails as shown on the map. We appreciate your cooperation by not trespassing.
  5. Please carry a sufficient amount of water for hiking and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
  6. You may camp only within the designated Campgrounds. Spaces are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Please leave your area as clean as when you found it. Camping outside the Campgrounds is prohibited unless by a special permit issued by the Havasupai Tribal Council.
  7. Water obtained or collected from Fern Springs at the Campground must be purified or treated by any treatment devices, such as a filter, iodine tablets, or a three minute boiling. The Creek water is for swimming and not drinking. Drinking water is available in the Village, please ask at the Tourist Office.
  8. Respect other campers. Excessive noise or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at the Campgrounds. Please contact the Ranger if your comfort is being compromised by such activity.
  9. Protect your property. The Campground is an open area susceptible to a significant amount of foot traffic. To reduce the risk of theft, please secure your campsite, inform the Ranger that you are planning a day away from your camp, and take your valuables with you.
  10. The Havasu Canyon is prone to periodic flash flooding. Floods here in the Canyon are highly unpredictable. Flooding is highly probable during or after a heavy rainfall either in the Canyon or on the Plateau. In rainy weather conditions, please do not hike beyond Mooney Falls, do not camp near the creek, and stay on areas designated as High Ground. If there is immediate danger to our campers, you will be asked to evacuate the Campgrounds.
  11. Helicopter service within the Reservation is not a Tribal enterprise or under the control or direction of the Tribe. All arrangements must be made independently with the helicopter service.

We hope you enjoy your stay at the Havasu Campgrounds and on the Havasupai Reservation.
