They arrived at Rushcreek on the 16th day of May, and camped near the great spring now owned by Mrs. William Friend. They spent the summer here, and made some progress in clearing land, but were too late to raise a crop of corn. In the fall William Wilson left his boys in camp and returned to Pennsylvania

for the remainder of his family. He sold his property and started for Ohio, arriving at his camp on Rushcreek on the 27th of November.

At Zanesville they crossed the river on a ferry boat with difficulty, as it was covered with ice. They spent the night on the west bank with a brother of Col. Ebenezer Zane. After leaving Zanesville they fell in company with George Sanderson, whose horse, on the way, came near dying with the colic. He was relieved by a liberal use of bear's oil.  Whether applied externally or given internally we cannot state. Sanderson was then the mail carrier. Nearly the entire route from Zanesville was through the forest over Zane's trace. They found two cabins at the crossing of Rush creek near Whitmore's or

Binckley's in Perry County.  A Mr. Atkinson and Peter Zarley were living there. They reached the camp of the boys at sunset --- when the family was united, thirteen in all, without house or home. But strong hands soon put up a cabin. Their nearest neighbor was S. Chaney, who lived near where West Rushville now stands on what is now the Barr farm. He kept a log cabin tavern, undoubtedly the first in the county. Other neighbors lived on the section north of their location, viz.: Frederick Heck, Ben. Johnson and a man named Smith.... William Wilson was a prominent man in his township, and was very much esteemed. He was the first justice of the peace elected in Richland township.... Wilson reared a large family of children. Thomas Wilson lived an old bachelor on the old home to a good old age. He was a gentleman of the old school, kind and generous, and lived a quiet, happy life.

David lived many years on a part of the old home section, but before the civil war moved to Tipton, Missouri. David was a prominent man and would have attracted attention anywhere. He was a man of fine presence and a good conversationalist. He was entertaining and agreeable.

Isaac Wilson was all his life a farmer of Fairfield County. At the time of his death he owned the best farm in Greenfield. Isaac was an active, powerful man, a leader in early times, and the man around whom everybody rallied when they wanted a brave and invincible leader. He was the father of the late J. W. Wilson, of Greenfield.

Michael Wilson lived for some time in Vinton county, and was living as late as 1852.

Benjamin died in New Orleans.

Robert Paden, an old citizen of this county, near Baltimore, married a daughter of William Wilson.

James Wilson and William Wilson spent most of their lives on a farm near Uniontown, Ohio. Joseph, one of the eight sons, lived on a farm near Rushville.

Mary, daughter of William Wilson, married a hatter of Zanesville named Herron.

Their daughter, Mary, was for years a teacher in our Lancaster schools.

Another daughter made her home with Thos. Wilson, and became the wife of Alfred Melick.

The third daughter married Chas. Nourse, father of the late Dr. Nourse.

Catherine Wilson married Gen. John Williamson, and after his death she became the wife of Col. Wm. Sumner. She was for many years a leading lady of Lancaster. The father of Gen. Tom Ritchie married a daughter of William Wilson. The General was a farmer and a popular man. He represented the Perry district in Congress and sent Phil. Sheridan to West Point. Mrs. Mary Work, of this city, is a daughter of David Wilson, and Mrs. W. M. Leiby is a great-granddaughter of the old pioneer, William Wilson. Mrs. Ada Wiseman is a great granddaughter....

The first Methodist church built in Fairfield county was Richland chapel. It was a hewed log structure as plain as plain could be. It stood near the old graveyard, and in sight of the home of Daniel Stevenson, not far from Wilson's.

Those in the neighborhood who were Methodists or patronized that church prior to 1805, were ... William Wilson ... and their families.

Thomas and David Wilson were staunch Methodists....The writer gleaned most of the facts in this sketch from a manuscript left by the late Thomas Wilson, an authority that will not for a moment be questioned by those who knew him.

[A Complete History of Fairfield County, Ohio]

William Wilson, in 1798, located a little south of Hooker's. His son James now resides on the same place. Samuel Wilson settled the same year, adjoining William. James Wilson, Sr., settled on the Carlisle farm. He was the first husband of the late Mrs. Thomas Carlisle. Statement of John Vanzant, of West Rushville: Father Wilson was a very early settler in the neighborhood of West Rushville. He entered a large tract of land lying north-west of the present site of the village. This constituted the Wilson settlement. His sons were William, Thomas, Joseph, Isaac and David, all of

whom were formerly well known. The Wilsons were a stalwart class of men, of the true pioneer type. David is the only survivor of them all, and is residing in Illinois.

The population of the twp was 260 in 1837.  Among the early settlers in the neighborhood at that time and whose families are still represented near the village was William WILSON, grandfather to Capt. Thomas WILSON and Rev. Geo. WILSON, now of Summerfield.  He settled near here in 1818, and representative of the fourth generation from him in direct line is now principal of the Stafford schools in the person of T.E. WILSON, son of Capt. Thos. WILSON.

Richey, General Thomas, deceased.  He was a member of Congress when he secured a cadetship for Phil. Sheridan.  The General must have lived till after the famous ride of Sheridan, in whose success he was ever most paternally enlisted, calling Sheridan "my boy."  The first news from Cedar Creek was bad, and no one mourned the situation more sincerely than old General Tom. Richey; but imagine his joy when the next day's news brought tidings of Phil's final victory, having snatched the stars and stripes from the disaster of the onset by a rally of troops already on the retreat, turned defeat into victory, and added a new chapter to the annals of warfare; a chapter which related what was never done before, the achievement of victory in the evening, with troops defeated, demoralized and in full retreat in the morning of  the same day.  Richey rejoiced, as if it were his own victory, and a final vindication of the sagacity which sent the son of a humble Irish constituent to achieve it.  "They can't whip that boy of mine," he would exclaim, as he rode with all haste from the post office to his rural home, answering his neighbors without halting his panting steed:  "I put Sheridan in the army; Lincoln promotes, and the whole world admires him."  The father of General Thomas, was James Richey, who came to Ohio as a settler in 1815. His mother, and the mother of Gideon, the only brother now left in Perry, was Elizabeth Wilson, sister of Thomas Wilson, who died near West Rushville, and whose father and brothers came to Fairfield county in 1800.  Her mother was Hester Fickle, of Scotch descent.... All the Richey family were left in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, when in 1815, James, alone came to Madison township, Perry county--then Muskingum--and settled on the farm which some years before had been selected by the mother of General Richey, on her last visit on horseback from Pennsylvania to her father, William Wilson, then in Fairfield, carrying Gideon in her arms. This must have been in 1807, as Gideon was born November 28, 1806. Grandfather William Wilson, gave to each of his nine sons and daughters, one hundred and sixty acres of land; and Rachel, the wife of James Richey, and mother of Thomas and Gideon, selected her own farm, now occupied by Thomas Williams in Madison township.  This grandfather, William Wilson, traveled on foot with his faithful rifle on his shoulder, and his dog by his side, while grandmother Wilson rode horseback, carrying her infant and spinning wheel from Maryland into Pennsylvania, through dense forests....  General Richey owed much of his physical and intellectual vigor to his mother, who was a heroine in rural life, ready with a remedy for man or beast in sickness; and Gideon says, "Castile soap and vinegar, simmered to oil, was mother's favorite poultice for all sores and wounds."  Confidence in parents and honesty, were the patrimony of the boys.

On 1870 census, Isaac, age 54, is a widower and has a real estate value of $29,850 and a personal property value of $1820.  Samuel, age 9, is living with him in 1870 (because Stewart and Eliza are both dead).  How is Isaac related to Samuel and Stewart?  We don't think that Isaac and Stewart are brothers because in the Marriage Book of Clinton County, May 13, 1830-May 2, 1844, does not list Stewart but lists Isaac and other siblings.

OBITUARY (Source Unknown)

Mary Fickel was born September 21, 1832, in Perry County, Ohio, and died in Tabor, Iowa, October 16, 1898 aged 66 years and 25 days. Miss Fickel was united in marriage to Mr. John Madden on November 5, 1857, at Defiance, Ohio. A family of five children blessed this union -- Joshua Wilson, Rachael, Emma L, Lydia and Mary E., - three of whom are married, one preceded the mother to heaven and the youngest remains at home. In 1864 Mr. and Mrs. Madden moved from Defiance, Ohio to Mills County, Iowa and settled on a farm where they resided until they removed to Tabor, at which place she died and where the now bereaved husband and youngest daughter remain, together with the other children and relatives, to mourn the departure of their beloved one.

Mrs. Madden was converted and united with the M. E. Church in her 24th year. She ever afterwards lived devoted to her Savior and sought to do good for His name. She shared with her husband the toil and hardships incident to pioneer life and was devoted to the welfare of her children. Before "going hence", but after her feet had touched the "Swollen Stream," she called the family to her bedside and bid them a final farewell, beseeching them all to meet her in Heaven, and to some who were not present she sent a special message.

The beautiful floral tributes laid on her casket by kind friends were expressions of esteem to her memory.

Altho' death with sickle keen cut down the body, yet by clinging to the cross she was has surely gained the fadeless crown and is now at rest in glory.

On account of the severe storm Monday the funeral services were deferred until Tuesday, October 18th, at 11 a.m., and were conducted from the home instead of Fairview Church, where Mr. and Mrs. Madden had held their membership so long. The service was conducted by Rev. H. C. Preston, who spoke briefly from II Cor. 5: 1. After the funeral obsequies at the home, the remains of the deceased, accompanied by relatives and friends, were conveyed to the cemetery near Malvern, and after a very brief service at the grave, were laid away beneath the soil to rest until that morn when the trumpet of God shall sound to bid the sleeping bodies of His saints arise and come forth in the power of a glorified immortality.

     "There is no death in Heaven;

For they who gain that shore

     Have won their immortality,

And they can die no more"

From The Tabor Beacon (found online at Mills County GenWeb)

Madden, Mrs. John, who has lived with her husband in North Tabor for a number of years, died Sunday morning and was buried Tuesday, interment being made in the Malvern Cemetery

     (Beacon 21 Oct 1898) (Malvern Cem. 21 Sep 1832 - 16 Oct 1898)

Notes for JOHN H. MADDEN:

DEATH OF J. H. MADDEN (Source Unknown)

Another Old Pioneer Answers to the Last Roll Call - Had lived in Mills County Since 1864.

Died, at his home in North Tabor, April 2, 1910, Mr. John H. Madden, aged nearly 77 years.

Thus passes from our midst another of the honored pioneer citizens.

John H. Madden was a man of excellent character, and sturdy constitution, and he continued to

be active in his accustomed pursuits till long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of

the ranks of the workers. To this end, there is no doubt that his sunshiny disposition largely

contributed. He met most of the conditions and situations of life with a joke. He was a practical,

mater-of-fact man, but had his own peculiar way of extracting merriment from life as it went

along, and he was not disposed to worry about matters that could be bettered in other ways.

This cheerful spirit remained with him to the last, and he retained his clearness of intellect up

to this closing days. He was invariably a good neighbor and there was no happier family circle

in the land than his. When he died, full of years, and ready to be gathered to his father's the

grief that was felt over the close of his long career was widespread and sincere. His best

monument will be the good report that he has left behind him in the community in which he has

Notes for JOSEPH FICKEL:

From Recollections of Sheridan County, 1976, Sheridan County Historical

Society

JOSEPH AND ESTHER FICKEL

Joseph Fickel was born in Putnam County, Ohio in 1859.  He was a son of Eli

and Martha Fickel and was one of eleven children.  In 1885 he started out

for himself and came to Sheridan County with three other men and located on

the place where his son Arthur now lives.  When he first came to Sheridan

County, he drove through from Valentine to his homestead.  He farmed for a

few years until dry weather set in then he started in the livestock business

and had such good success that he continued in that business.  He and his

brother, Manley, acquired all of their property through hard and persistent

labor, and by buying when land was cheap.  They saw their share of hard

times, but seemed to enjoy the good times also.  Joseph "batched" for more

than fifteen years.  He passed away in April, 1936.

The Fickel ranch is located four miles east and six miles north of Gordon.

The ranch is half sand hills and half hard land.  When Joseph was living,

calves from the ranch were sold locally to feeders who fed them out to

yearlings.  Now his son, Arthur, sells through the sale at Gordon auctions.

The brand is still the Diamond Inverted Half Circle.

Esther Fickel was born to Hans and Hannah Nelson April 2, 1877.  She was

born in Denmark.  This life story was told by Esther herself in July, 1969:

My father came to America and settled in Sheffield, Illinois, working on the

railroad.  My mother, sister Cena and myself were required to remain in

Denmark with my grandmother as she was not able to sustain herself alone.

Later, she passed away, so we prepared for the trip to join my father in

America.  We came aboard a sailing ship of the King Walla Line and after

experiencing storms and squalls on the high seas, we arrived in New York

after about three weeks journey.  One of my diversions during the voyage was

to reach the upper deck and watch for the fish that followed the ship, as

they came after food thrown overboard.  We immigrated to America when I was

five years old, got tickets to Sheffield, Illinois, where there was a large

Danish settlement located.  I got my first taste of school in America at

Sheffield.  The family dwelling there was a very simple rented house.  Most

all men worked on the railroad, and my father said anyone who could use a

shovel could get work.  All Dales were close-knit and all understood each

other.  I started to work when I was twelve years old.  I was small and

think, but tried to do anything that I was asked to do.  As I grew a little

older, I baked bread, cared for sick people, cooked for large families and

always cared for children.  At one time I was asked to bathe and dress a

newborn baby for burial as none of the family felt they could do it, so I

did my best at all times.  I worked many places, but a few were Margraves,

Duerfeldts, Croyell and Ed Ross's.  All were grand people to work for.  Mrs.

Ross was like a mother to me and she was kind to all children.  There was

much sickness, such as typhoid fever.  I got the fever and was real sick for

many days, but thanks to the country doctor, Dr. Baker, a lady medical

practioner, who came and left prescriptions, I ultimately recovered.

Joseph and Esther exchanged the vows of matrimony on November 29, 1899.

They were married by Rev. Easily, with Mr. and Mrs. Scamahorn as witnesses.

After their marriage they moved to the Fickel ranch which is still the home

of their son, Arthur.  Three children were born to them:  Martha, now

married to Carl Paulsen and living in Maryland, and Dorothy and Arthur, who

live on the ranch and also have a nice home in Gordon.  The Paulsens have

three children:  Joanne at home in Aberdeen, Maryland; Virginia and her

husband, Bob Kerwin, who have three children, Christine, Bobby and Paul and

live in Renton, Washington; and Carl Paulsen Jr. and wife and daughter, Amy,

who are in the service in Germany at the present time.

Esther passed away on June 19, 1974 at the age of ninety-seven, after

spending three and one-half years in a nursing home.
