GUS SCHRIEFER FOUND DEAD IN HOME SATURDAY
Stroke Proves Fatal to Life Resident of Scott County
The body of Gustav Schriefer, 63, a resident of Scott County his entire life, was found in the basement of his home, 2101 East Twelfth Street, about 2 P.M. Saturday. Death had resulted from a stroke of apoplexy, Coroner J.D. Cantwell announced following an examination. He had been dead just a short time.
Neighbors chanced to call at his home Saturday afternoon, and failing to find him although the doors were not locked, they searched the house. He had suffered two previous strokes recently, Dr. Cantwell said.
Mr. Schriefer was born in Davenport, Jan. 10, 1865 and had farmed near Davenport on the Utica Ridge Road until retiring in 1922. He was of the Lutheran faith. Several nieces and nephews survive. The body was removed to the Runge mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements.

William Schriefer, 63 years old, died at 6:15 o'clock Saturday morning at the home 822 Judson Street, after a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County.
Deceased was born here July 22, 1851. He was educated in the public schools of this city and for many years resided on a farm on the Utica Ridge Road. In the year 1891 he came to Davenport and for 12 years was employed by the T.W. McClelland company as teamster. Mr. Schriefer was a member of Herman Lodge No. 489 of the Harugari.
He was married twice. The first time to Miss Anna Wilckens, who died in 1879, the latter time to Miss Dorothy (sp) Rodemann, who survives.
He is also survived by 11 children. Caroline, Anna, Mae, Hattie, and Catherine Schriefer. Mrs. Minnie Wiggers (sp), Mrs. M.C. Wilmers (sp), and Mrs. C.F. Keding and Henry B., William R., and Edward A. Schriefer, all of this city, besides two brothers, Henry and Gustave Schriefer and two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Schriefer, and Mrs. Sophie Lench, and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the late home, with interment in Oakdale cemetery.

Mrs. Dorathea Schriefer
Mrs. Dorathea Agnes Schriefer, 88, a resident of Davenport for 80 years, died at 6:30 A.M. Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mr. E.R. Patton, 3716 Boies Avenue after a brief illness.
She was born in Brockdorf Wilster March, Germany, April 20, 1857, the daughter of Claus and Dorothea Rademann. When 8 years of age she came to the United States and direct to Davenport, where she was married to William Schriefer on Sept. 15, 1880. Her husband preceded her in death.
The oldest gold star mother of the American Legion auxiliary, she was also a member of the Glenn Youngkin Navy Mothers. Mrs. Schriefer belongs to the German-American Pioneer Settlers' association and was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran church.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Minnie Wieggers, Miss Mae Schriefer, Mrs. Carl Keding, Mrs. R. Mock and Mrs. E.R. Patton, all of Davenport; two step daughters, Mrs. C. Barr and Mrs. A. Petersen, also of this city; two sons, Henry W. of Davenport and Edwin with the navy in the South Pacific; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. One daughter, a brother, a son and one sister preceded her in death.
Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Friday in the Runge chapel. Interment will be in Oakdale cemetery. The American Legion auxiliary will conduct services at the cemetery. The Glenn Youngkin Navy Mothers are asked to be at the mortuary by 2 P.M. Friday, and will attend the services in a group. All officers are asked to be in uniform.

The Schriefer Funeral
Funeral services for Mrs. Dorathea Schriefer were held at 2:30 P.M. Friday in the Runge Chapel, with the Rev. Theodore Schultz officiating. Grace Lohmiller sang, and the Glen Youngkin Navy Mother's club attended the services in a group. The American Legion auxiliary officiated at services in Oakdale cemetery.
Bearers were Matthes Voss, Martin Carlsen, Ray Wieggers, Clarence and Don Keding and Ray Schriefer.

PRIVATE GIVES LIFE FOR U.S.
Henry W. Schriefer, R.R. No. 3, Davenport, received a telegram from the war department last evening stating that his brother Pvt. William N. Schriefer, of the infantry, had died of lobar pneumonia on Oct. 12. The war department did not state where Pvt. Schriefer had died, but relatives received a card on Oct. 11, stating that he had arrived safely overseas.
Pvt. Schriefer was born in Davenport on October 9, 1891. He was educated in the public schools here and later was employed for H. G. Pauli, florist. Just previous to entering the service he was employed on a farm. He began training at Camp Pike, leaving with the Scott county contingent on July 27, of this year.
The survivors of Pvt. Schriefer are: His mother, Mrs. William H. Schriefer, of 822 Judson Street, Davenport; six sisters, Mrs. Minnie Wieggers, Mrs. Laura Wilmes, Mrs. C. F. Keding, Jr. Mrs. R. Mock and the Misses Mae and Katharine Schriefer; two brothers, Henry W. Schriefer and Edward Schriefer, and two half-sisters, Mrs. William Barr and Miss Anna Schriefer, all of Davenport.

Mrs. Wm. Schriefer Receives Word of Son's Death in Hospital
Official notice has been received by local relatives of the death of Private William N. Schriefer, son of Mrs. William H. Schriefer, residing at 822 Judson Street. The telegram received by his mother states that the Davenport young man died of pneumonia in a base hospital in France.
Private Schriefer was born in Davenport 27 years ago and lived here all his life. He left with the July contingent and became a member of an infantry company.
He is survived by his mother, five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Wieggers, Mrs. George G. Wilmes, Miss Mae Schriefer, Mrs. C. L. Keding, Jr., Mrs. R. Mock and Miss Katherine Schriefer; two half-sisters, Mrs. William Barr and Miss Anna Schriefer, and two brothers, Henry W. and Edward Schriefer, all of this city.

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Kay Patton, 70 a former resident of Davenport.
Services will be at 2:30 P.M. Monday in the Runge Chapel, Davenport, with burial in Fairmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Katherine P. Patton, 72, a Davenport, Iowa native who moved to Phoenix 10 years ago from Salt Lake City, died Tuesday in Maryvale Hospital.
Services and burial will be in Davenport. Friends may call from 7 to 9 P.M. today in Lundberg Chapel of Chimes, 5852 W. Glenn Drive, Glendale.
Mrs. Patton 5647 W. Meadowbrook, is survived by a brother, Edward Schriefer of Phoenix and five sisters in Davenport.

Edward R. Patton
Edward R. Patton, 70 a well known Davenport florist who operated a shop at 3802 Boies Avenue, died in his home 3716 Boies Avenue at 11:15 P.M. Saturday following an extended illness.
Mr. Patton was secretary of the Tri-City Florist Club for 30 years and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran church, the Elks, and Eagles. He had served a president of the Fairmount Cemetery association for some time and at the time of his death was a member of the board.
Son of the late Eubert and Mary Patton, he was born in Drury township, Rock Island county, Jan. 30, 1876, and received his education in the rural schools. He moved to Wilton Junction as a young man and in 1897 came to Davenport. He first married Dorothea Caroline Berg in 1897 in Wilton Junction and she died July 19, 1924. On Aug. 10, 1932, he married Katherine Pauline Schriefer. Surviving are his wife; a daughter Mrs. Frank Hayman, of Waukegan, Ill, a sister Mrs. George Whitmer of Wilton Junction, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Dorothy Gilpin of Elizabethtown, Ky.
Funeral services will be held in the Hill & Fredericks Chapel at 3 P.M. Tuesday followed by burial in Fairmount Cemetery.

Schriefer
Henry Schriefer, 1623 Mississippi Avenue, died at his home at 12:15 o'clock this morning following a three weeks illness. He was 61 years of age on his last birthday anniversary, November 12, 1919.
He was born in Scott County, Nov. 12, 1858. The deceased had lived here all his life. He was married to Katherine Wieggers of Davenport, in 1887. For the past 12 years he had been employed by the Davis and Wright Furnace & Hardware Co. He was a member of the Harugari and Modern Woodman lodges and the East Davenport Sick ( unreadable) society.
Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Katherine Schriefer, four daughters, Mrs. Louis Schick, of Davenport, Mrs. Gus Gertz, of Little Falls, Minn., Mrs. C.F. Morgan of Boise, Idaho, Miss Hilda Schriefer of Washington, D.C.. three sons, Herbert, Raymond, and Arnold of Davenport, one brother Gus Schriefer of Scott County, and two sisters, Mrs. Hans Lensch of Walnut, Ia and Miss Louise Schriefer of Davenport.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mrs. Katherine Schriefer, 1622 Mississippi Avenue, died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis Schick, 3014 Hobson Avenue, at 12:25 A.M. Monday after a lingering illness. She was 75 years of age. The body is at the Hill & Frederick's mortuary pending funeral arrangements.
Katherine Wieggers was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, April 13, 1868, the daughter of Heinrich and Amelie Wieggers. She was educated in Germany and in 1882 came to America and directly to Scott County. On June 18, 1887, she was married to Henry Schriefer in Davenport. She was of Lutheran faith.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Schick and Mrs. Leslie Cronan of Davenport, Hilda Schriefer at home; Mrs. Gus Gertz of Maple Plain, Minn., and Mrs. C.F. Morgan, Boise, Idaho, three sons, Herbert of Davenport, Ray of Memphis, Tenn., and Arno at Camp Wolters, Tex; two sisters, Mrs. Meta Burmeister of Davenport, and Mrs. Emelie Arp of Egan, S.D.; 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Charles A. Schesser, 67 2752 1/2 Eddy Street, Bettendorf, a resident of the city the past 30 years, died Thursday afternoon in the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. Stanley Wrebelis, 7076 Black Oak Road, Gary, Ind. where he had been visiting. he suffered a paralytic stroke about four weeks ago.
Mr. Schesser was born in Dixon, Ia., Aug. 23, 1872 and had been engaged in farming near Bettendorf. His marriage to Laura Schriefer Wilmes was an event in Davenport, Oct. 5, 1925.
He was a member of the Spanish American War Veterans of Davenport, and served with Co. 1 36th U.S. volunteer infantry in the Philippine Islands.
Surviving are two step-daughters Mrs. Velma Wrebelis of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Tom Swanwick of Bettendorf, two step -sons, Oscar and Matthew Wilmes, both of Bettendorf, one sister Mrs. Anna West of Davenport; two brothers, John and Robert Schesser, both of Davenport, and 11 grandchildren.
The body will be taken to the McGinnis funeral home where services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

Carl Fred Keding, Davenport, carpenter, died suddenly at 6:15 P.M. Saturday at his home at 1137 East Denison Avenue. he was 59 years of age.
Mr. Keding who was employed with a construction firm in Muscatine was born March 22, 1886 in Davenport. he received his education in the schools here and on Jan. 8, 1908 was married to Louisa Schriefer in Davenport.
Mr. Keding was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Davenport Aerie No. 235, the L.O.O.M. No. 23, Davenport, and the carpenter's union No. 4.
Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alvin Speth of Davenport; four sons, Clarence H. and Donald W., of this city, Lieut. Henry in Germany and Carl R., fireman first class at Newport, R.I.; two sisters Mrs. Edward Lange and Mrs. Lage, both of Davenport, two brothers, Fred Keding, Davenport, and George Keding, Detroit, Mich. and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Louis Schick, 67, of 2007 Dixwell Street, Davenport, died at 3:50 A.M. Saturday in Mercy hospital following a long illness. She is the mother of Lester R. Schick, Davenport fire chief.
Born April 28, 1888 in Davenport, the former Olga Schriefer attended schools in Davenport, and was married to Mr. Schick in 1907 in Davenport.

She married Boyd Bud Schriefer, Sr. on October 5, 1974 in Moline. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2003. Eula taught in a country school in Keota, Iowa and later was employed at the former New York Store and Carlson Brothers in Moline. She was Past-President of the Moline Auxiliary of F.O.E. Aerie #1112, a 50 year member of Moline Chapter #258 O.E.S.; she was active in Plymouth Congregational Church and was presently a member of Hope United Church of Christ. She was also a lifetime member of Oakwood Country Club. Survivors include her daughter and spouse Mary Jo and David Abrahamson of Clayton, MO; her son and spouse Paul and Joyce Aller of Moline; her step-sons and spouses Ronald and Kay Schriefer of Moline and Boyd and Cathy Schriefer, Jr. of Lexington, KY; 6 grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and 11 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marjorie Sondag and step-daughter Rosalie Dodge.

Relatives in the Quad-Cities have received word of the death of Mrs. C.F. Morgan, 63, of Boise, Idaho, a former Davenporter. She died Monday in Boise after an extended illness.
The former Ella Schriefer was born Feb. 13, 1894, in Davenport. She was married to Mr. Morgan, June 22, 1915 in Davenport. The couple moved to Boise at that time. Mr. Morgan preceded her in death.

Gene V. Mock, 82, of Fayetteville, Ark., formerly of Bartlesville, died
Feb. 7 at Washington Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Davenport, Iowa, to Randolph and Hertha
Schriefer Mock. He was a retired Ph.D. chemist, having worked for Phillips
Petroleum Co., Dupont and as director of ARPA at the Pentagon and college
professor. After retirement 1978, he volunteered as a genealogist at the
Fayetteville Public Library.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile N. Mock in 1998.
