Notes for UNKNOWN (POSSIBLY WILLIAM) SCOTT:
SCOTT. This ranks among the most prevalent of surnames in the British Isles, almost sixty coats-of-arms being assigned to it, while the London Directory shows about two hundred traders in the metropolis so denominated. In records of early date it is usually written Le Scot, implying a native of Scotland. Now as the tendency of Scotchmen to "go south" is proverbial in Britain, the commonness of the name in England is not to be wondered at; but why many families that never lived out of Scotland should be called Scott, is not so readily explained. The Duke of Buccleuch, the head of the surname in Scotland, traces his pedi-

gree to Richard Le Scot, of Murdeston, county Lanark, one of the Scottish barons, who swore fealty to Edward I., in 1296. The name exists in records of earlier date, but the claim set up by one zealous genealogist for a Norman extraction has no foundation. M. de Gervile remarks: " It is somewhat curious that this Duke of Buccleuch seeks for his name in Normandy, and pretends that the original appellation was L'Escott." Of the baronet family, Scott of Ancrum and Scott of Duninald, claim to be descended from the renowned wizard, Michael Scott, who flourished in the twelfth century, and assert that the Buccleuch Scotts are the younger branch of this house. In ancient times the Latin word "Scotus" was applied both to the inhabitants of Ireland and Scotland, its meaning being similar to that of "Gael" in the ancient language common to both countries. Thus the missionaries from Ireland who civilized and Christianized the pagan countries of Europe between the Sixth and Twelfth centuries were called "Scoti", the plural of the Latin word "Scotus", which mean a native of Ireland or Scotland. In Roman and mediaeval times Ireland was called "Scotia", and Scotland was called "Scotia Minor". After the eleventh or twelfth centuries, the Scandinavian word of Eireland or Ireland, displaced throughout Europe in current phraseology the term Scotia, which was henceforth applied to Scotland alone, whose other name was Caledonia. Scott is thus the modern form of the ancient Latin appellation, "Scotus."

AN ABBREVIATED EARLY HISTORY
OF THE TOWN OF PETERBOROUGH NH
excerpts from
"History of the Town of Peterborough,
Hillsborough County,
New Hampshire"
by Albert Smith, M.D., LL.D, 1876
The names of the first settlers [from several sources] included William Robbe, Alexander Scott, Hugh Gregg, William Gregg, Samuel Stinson, William Robbe, William Wallace, and William Mitchell. "No permanent settlements took place until 1749... Of the party that came in 1739, all were probably driven away, by fear of the Indians, before any considerable clearing had been made... In 1742, a party of five, came from Lunenburg and cleared a small patch of land near the old meeting-house...they abandoned the settlement at or before the alarm of the war in 1744" [i.e. French and Indian War] and it was not resumed until the peace of 1749. "Another attempt was made before 1744 by William Menee, John Taggart, and William Ritchie," who left and returned in 1749 or 1750. Another account states that Capt. Thomas Morison and a Mr. Russell came to the town as early as 1744. The first child born in Peterborough, was not born until Feb. 22, 1751.
Many of the early settlers were of Scottish or Irish origin. Families from Lunenburg, Mass. and Londonderry, N.H. can be found in the lists off the early settlers [in addition to the list above, which included]: William Ritchie, Dea. William McNee, Dea. William McNee Jr., Joseph Caldwell, John Taggart, Gustavus Swan, William Stuart, William Smith, Samuel Miller, Thomas Cunningham, Alexander Scott, James Robbe, John White, John Morison, Jonathan Morison, Capt. Thomas Morison, John Smith, Dea. Timothy Davison, Thomas Turner, Dea. Samuel Mitchell, William Scott, William Mitchell, Rev. Mr. Harvey, Samuel Stinson, William Robbe, Samuel Todd, Dea. Samuel Moore, John Ferguson, David Bogle, James McKean, Jotham Blanchard, Maj. Samuel Gregg, Lieut. John Gregg, Hugh Wilson, Jotham Blanchard, William McCoy, George McClourge, Thomas McCloud, Capt. David Steele, Samuel Miller, Joseph Hammill, Maj. Robert Wilson, Dr. John Young, Samuel Brackett, Thomas Little, Abraham Holmes, Abel Parker, Elijah Puffer, and others.
The earliest tavern in [Peterborough, NH.] was started by [Scott, Alexander] on the west side of Street Road as early as 1750 or 1751. It was here that the Proprietors of Peterborough held the only meeting they ever held in town, on September 26-7, 1753. This was operated by Alexander Scott who sold out to Robert Wilson in 1758. This old tavern was the scene of much local activity and is now marked by a plaque erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

CHESHIRE CO. This town is situated on the height of the land between Merrimac and Connecticut Rivers. It is mountainous and very rocky. the soil is better adapted to grazing than tillage. The south branch of Ashuelot River has its source near the center of the town. The stream the east section, fall into the Merrimac; those on the west, into the Connecticut. there are fourteen ponds in the town, some of which are of considerable magnitude.
The first family was that of John Taggard, whose privations and hardships were very great. Their grain was procured at Peterborough, at the distance of twenty miles, which was conveyed by him on his back through the pathless wilderness. At one time, they had nothing, for six days, on which to subsist, but the flesh of the moose.
This town was formerly called Limerick. It was incorporated in 1774, when it received the name Stoddard, from Colonel Samson Stoddard of Chelmsford, to whom, with others, it was granted.
Boundaries. North by Washington, east by Windsor and Antrim, south by Nelson and Sullivan, and west by Gilsum and Marlow.
First settlers: John Taggard, Reuben Walton, Alexander Scott, James Mitchell, and others in 1769.

Dublin, Cheshire County, New Hampshire History
Of the first settlement of the town, little is known. The first settler was William Thornton, who located on lot 1, range 6, probably in the year 1752. His daughter, Molly Thornton, it is said, was the first child born in the town. He lived here only a few years, however, leaving through fear of the Indians. He was a brother of Matthew Thornton, who was the first named, as he was by far the most distinguished of the proprietors, and much the largest landowner in the town, having at one time twenty-eight shares, or eighty-four lots. He was a physician, born in Ireland, and first settled in Londonderry, though he subsequently resided in Merrimack. He was a colonel of militia, a delegate to the Continental congress, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a judge of the superior court of New Hampshire, and was, in short, one of the leading men of the state.
The next settlers were Scotch-Irish, as they were called, being descendants of Scotch people, who had settled in the north of Ireland, whence they came to this country and established themselves at Londonderry, and elsewhere, and, at a later date, settled in Peterboro and numerous other towns. As early as 1760, or thereabouts, there were in the town, of this description of persons, John Alexander, William McNee, Alexander Scott, and his son William, James Taggart, and his son William. and perhaps others, mostly from Peterboro. Henry Strongman came at a later day, and with the exception of him, none of this class became permanent inhabitants of the town, none of them being here in 1771. "History of Dublin, NH"

TOWN HISTORY (of STODDARD NH):
The settlement of the town was commenced by John Taggard, in June
1768, and about the same time came Reuben Walton, Alexander Scott,
James Mitchell, Richard Richarson, Amos Butterfield, Joseph Dodge,
and Oliver Parker. Mr. Taggard's family suffered many privations, Mr.
Taggard being obliged to fetch his grain on his back through the forest
from Peterboro [sic Peterborough], a distance of twenty miles. At one
time the family, for six days, had nothing to eat but the flesh of a
moose. But prosperity at length began to dawn upwards on them, new
settlers came in rapidly, and the forest began to melt before them, and
the broad cleared acres to appear. Four years after Mr. Taggard came
here, in 1773, the town had 215 inhabitants, and the following year the
town was incorporated. Eventually it became one of the most populous
and enterprising towns of the county, for its inhabitants, thrifty,
and well-to-do, sturdy and vigorous in whatever they undertook, it
could not help but be a prosperous and growing community. The maximum
of this prosperity was probably reached in 1820, when the census
returns showed us a population of 1,203 souls, where now is less than
553. The ever insatiable west, the professions, the great cities, and,
above all--death, have recognized the sons of this rural town...

" Alexander Scott is represented in Mr. Dunbar's history as being one of
the first 5 who made any effort at settlement as early as 1739. They may
not have stayed more than a single season. Another account does not
include his name among the first pioneers. He no doubt came early but
just when he came we have no way of knowing. He was probably born in
Ireland and came with the other emigrants of the same name. William

On the third page is printed in a long extract from "a Philadelphia paper of July 2, 1792," giving an account of a severe hurricane that swept over the eastern part of Pennsylvania on July 1. The storm did much damage in Philadelphia and its neighborhood, but fortunately there was no great loss of life. At the end of the extract the following episode is given, with some editorial comment by the Boston Gazette within brackets, as here printed: - "Since writing the above account, we further learn, that a boat from this city (Boston) to the Jersey shore was overset within fifty rods of Samuel Cowper's Wharff. There were in the boat Capt. (William) Scott, Mr. Blake, his wife and four small children, a young woman, and Mr. Betis, in all nine persons, none of whom could swim but Capt. Scott." "The Captain, by the most astonishing and praise-worthy exertions, was able, providentially, to save them all. He swam ashore with one child hanging around his neck, and one to each arm; and he returned to the boat amidst the boisterous waves raging in a furious and frightful manner, and brought the others, who had with much difficulty held by the boat, safe to the land." "For the honor of Captain Scott, an old and valiant soldier, a Son of Massachusetts, this circumstance should be handed down to posterity." [The above mentioned hero, is Capt. William Scott, of Groton (MA) in this Commonwealth; and an invalid officer of the United States. At the commencement of the late war in the Battle of Bunker's Hill he received several wounds, was taken prisoner, and confined in goal in this town, when in possession of the British and suffered much mal- treatment.]" The "Columbian Centinel" (Boston), July 14, 1792, also mentions the same incident, but does not give so many particulars: "William Scott was a son of John and Mary (Chamberlin) Scott of Groton, where he was born on July 1, 1742. It will be noticed that the act of heroism was performed on his own birthday, on the day when he was fifty years old, and this fact may have incited him to make special exertions. During the Revolutionary War he saw much military service, and at one time was in the navy. For a sketch of his life, see Dr. Albert Smith's "History of Peterborough, New Hampshire (p. 248 of 2nd Part). His death took place at Litchfield, New York on Sept. 19, 1796 at the age of 54 years." Richard J.
A prominent Boston Tory in the American Revolution, after the Battle of Bunker Hill, visited the Boston jail, where a number of American prisoners were languishing. Approaching one, a wounded lieutenant named Scott who appeared to be a man of some intelligence, he asked him how he had come to be mixed up with the rebellion. The Tory, in a book published after the war, recorded the lieutenant's answer verbatim:
The case was this Sir! I lived in a country town; I was a shoemaker, and got my living by my labor. When this rebellion came on, I saw some of my neighbors get into commission, who were no better than myself. I was very ambitious, and did not like to see those men above me. I was asked to enlist as a private soldier. My ambition was too great for so low a rank; I offered to enlist upon having a lieutenant's commission, which was granted. I imagined myself now in a way of promotion: if I was killed in battle, there would be an end of me, but if my captain was killed, I should rise in rank, and should still have a chance to rise higher. These sir, were the only motives of my entering into the service; for as to the dispute between Great Britain and the colonies, I know nothing of it; neither am I capable of judging whether it is right or wrong.
It turns out that Lieutenant Scott was a real person. American records show a Lieutenant William Scott of Peterborough, New Hampshire, wounded several times and captured at Bunker Hill. Everything the Tory said about him that can be checked appears to be accurate. But we also know, as the Tory did not, what happened to Scott after his interrogation. He was taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he escaped after his wounds healed by stealing a small boat. He rejoined Washington's army at New York just in time to be captured again, but this time he escaped by swimming the Hudson River, according to a newspaper account, with his sword tied around his neck and his watch pinned to his hat. He was ordered back to New Hampshire to recruit a company of light infantry, which he led against Burgoyne's invasion from Canada. By then a captain, he is mentioned in reports as having cut off Burgoyne's last effort to break out of the trap at Saratoga. Later he retired because his wounds pained him, but he spent the last year of the war on a privateer attacking British shipping. Ruined financially by the war, he lived in poverty until the War Department gave him a job with a surveying party in Ohio. When the party came down with "lake fever," Scott led them back to civilization, but a few days later, in 1796, he himself died. No one interviewed Scott a second time to ask him whether he had changed his mind about the American Revolution or whether, in 1775, he had been misquoted.

Here was the traditional device by which those in charge of any social order mobilize and discipline a recalcitrant population -- offering the adventure and rewards of military service to get poor people to fight for a cause they may not see clearly as their own. A wounded American lieutenant at Bunker Hill, interviewed by Peter Oliver, a Tory (who admittedly might have been looking for such a response), told how he had joined the rebel forces:
I was a Shoemaker, & got my living by my Labor. When this Rebellion came on, I saw some of my Neighbors got into Commission, who were no better than myself. I was very ambitious, & did not like to see those Men above me. I was asked to enlist, as a private Soldier . . . I offered to enlist upon having a Lieutenants Commission; which was granted. I imagined my self now in a way of Promotion: if I was killed in Battle, there would be an end of me, but if my Captain was killed, I should rise in Rank, & should still have a Chance to rise higher. These Sir! were the only Motives of my entering into the Service; for as to the Dispute between Great Britain & the Colonies, I know nothing of it. . . .
John Shy investigated the subsequent experience of that Bunker Hill lieutenant. He was William Scott, of Peterborough, New Hampshire, and after a year as prisoner of the British he escaped, made his way back to the American army, fought in battles in New York, was captured again by the British, and escaped again by swimming the Hudson River one night with his sword tied around his neck and his watch pinned to his hat. He returned to New Hampshire, recruited a company of his own, including his two eldest sons, and fought in various battles, until his health gave way. He watched his eldest son die of camp fever after six years of service. He had sold his farm in Peterborough for a note that, with inflation, became worthless. After the war, he came to public attention when he rescued eight people from drowning after their boat turned over in New York harbor. He then got a job surveying western lands with the army, but caught a fever and died in 1796.
Scott was one of many Revolutionary fighters, usually of lower military ranks, from poor and obscure backgrounds. Shy's study of the Peterborough contingent shows that the prominent and substantial citizens of the town had served only briefly in the war. Other American towns show the same pattern. As Shy puts it: "Revolutionary America may have been a middle-class society, happier and more prosperous than any other in its time, but it contained a large and growing number of fairly poor people, and many of them did much of the actual fighting and suffering between 1775 and 1783: A very old story."

7. WILLIAM (MAJOR)3 SCOTT (ARCHIBALD2, UNKNOWN (POSSIBLY WILLIAM)1) was born May 1743 in Sauteragh, County Derry, Ulster Ireland, and died July 14, 1814 in Greenfield, Saratogo Co, NY. He married (1) ROSANNA TATE Abt. 1760 in Ireland, daughter of JOHN TATE. She was born 1745, and died Abt. 1820 in Greenfield, Saratogo Co, NY. He married (2) CHARITY "CHERRY" GILLILAND 1786 in Greenfield, Saratoga Co, NY. She was born 1729, and died October 29, 1816 in Greenfield, Saratogo Co, NY.
Notes for WILLIAM (MAJOR) SCOTT:
He took part in the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 16, 1775. On Nov. 8, 1776, he became commander and Captain of the 7th Co., 1st NH Regiment. On Sept. 19, 1777, he was wounded in battle and taken prisoner at Stillwater. He was wounded in his right hand by a musket ball and, bayonetted in the back. He was later promoted to Major, and then Brigade Major. In Mar. 1783, he was Commander of "Scott's Battalion". He was discharged with the rest of his Brigade in 1783 near Continental Island, Hudson River, near West Point, New York. (He was promoted to Lt. Col. before his discharge.) After the War, he became a merchant in Schenectady, New York. After his move to Greenfield, Sarasota Co., New York, he became road commissioner, and later, Town Supervisor. His will was probated Aug. 5, 1815.
According to The Scott Book, p. 4, William Scott and his first wife came to America shortly after their marriage and settled in Peterborough, NH. William Scott was a merchant. On hearing of the Battle of Lexington, he closed his store, melted his lead weights into bullets and raised a company of 60 men. On arriving at Boston, he was transferred to the First New Hampshire Regiment, commanded by Col. John Stark, under the command of General Putnam. Capt. Samuel cherry, in William Scott's pension application, said:
"...he crossed over to Nodley's Island and brought off a number of cattle and horses
from under the enemies fire, and on the same evening a British armed schooner, having
been sent to annoy us, was so harassed by the fie of our musketry that they quit the decks
and she drifted upon the ways of Winnesemit Ferry, the British barges being sent out to
extricate her. William Scott, then a Captain, with a party of soldiers, proceeded into the
water and mud, under a brisk fire from the enemy and set her on fire, whereby she
was burned down to the water."
William Scott also served at the Battle of Breed's Hill and she was in the retreat from Ticonderoga. On 19 Sep. 1777, in the battle with General Burgoyne at Beamis Heights he became entitled to the rank of Major, and the command of the right wing of the regiment devolved upon him. In the course of the day he received a wound by a ball passing through his left thumb, cutting off the small sinews and bones of his hand. When he returned from the Plains of Monmouth and was trying to quell a mutiny he was stabbed by a soldier of the Pennsylvania line. The offender, McGonnegal, was sentenced to death by a Court Marshall, but he was pardoned by General Washington at the request of Major Scott.
William Scott was with the western expedition under the command of General Sullivan as Major of the First New Hampshire Regiment. He was acting commander of the Brigade 1782-83. He became a Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet, 10 Oct. 1783. He had 36 battle scars from his eight years and eight months service in the Revolution. Both of his hands were drawn and misshapen from the wounds. His name appears many times in the New Hampshire Revolutionary Rolls. 12 March 1807, he was granted a pension of 25 a month.
When his regiment was dissolved in July 1784, he became a merchant in Schenectady, NY. In 1786, he moved to Ballston, now Greenfield, NY. The first land that he bought he sold to Gen. Samuel Bailey in 1790. He bought a second farm in N. Greenfield that became known at "the homestead." It had 100 acres. In 1793 he was first Supervisor of the town of Greenfield and was re-elected in 1796. 1798-1803 he was Justice of the Peace. In 1812 he built the family home that was in the family for over 100 years. He was buried with full Masonic ceremonies in Bailey Cemetery.
In her Book of Ancestors, p. 227, Mary Edith (Guckes) (Harrell) Stevens wrote: Tradition tells us that the Scott family originally came from Hassenden (now Jedbrugh), County of Roxburgh, Scotland. Between 1672 and 1743, they emigrated to Ireland to become part of the large group of Scotch-Irish, many of whom later came to America.
William Scott was the son of Archibald Scott, born about 1710, a blacksmith who lived in the Parish of Macasquin, County Derry, Ireland.
William Scott emigrated about 1760 to settle in Peterborough, NH. He was probably a nephew of Alexander Scott of Peterborough.
After the Battle of Bunker Hill, William Scott raised a troop of 60 men and led them to Boston, MA to fight in the Revolution. He served in the War for 8 years and 8 months becoming a Captain and then Major. He became a Lieutenant Colonel by brevet. Through William Scott, descendents are eligible for the Society of the Cincinnati (members must claim ancestry to someone who served on Washington's staff).
After the War, he lived in Schenectady, NY and in 1786, settled on a farm north of Greenfield, NY, an area then part of Ballston. He was first Supervisor of the town in 1793, and a Justice of the Peace from 1799 to 1803. A mason, he was buried with full Masonic honors in Bailey Cemetery.
William Scott and Rosanna Tait divorced sometime after 1783 and in about 1790, he married Charity Gilliland who was born in 1729 and died in 1816, aged 87. Note, this would make her much older (14 yrs.) than William Scott whose estimated birth date is 1743.
Thomas Seymour Scott had access to various family letters, which he quoted in his book:
"Hugh Scott, Swatragh, May 16th, 1793 to William Scott, Esq., Milton, Saratoga, Co., N. Y.
Dear and loving Brother:
I read with joy your letter... According to your advice I did endeavor to get in readiness, but times being so far altered I could not get off my concern for this year at the expiration of which, God willing I mean to be with you. I have conveyed my eldest son, John, to the ship.
My family consists of my wife, four boys, one daughter with me and all small ... The boy that is gone to you, if it pleases God he ever reaches you, I hope you will have a fatherly care over him. He is well advised to be obedient to you."
Thomas Seymour Scott adds that Hugh's son John is said to have gone to Cincinnati, Ohio, and does not further refer to him. It also would seem that although Hugh Scott expressed his intention of coming to America, that his plans were probably not realized.
Thomas Seymour Scott tells us that William Scott used a Crest upon the handles of the spoons in his camp chest, and that he used the same crest on the panels of his carriage after the Revolution. From this he deduces that the Scott family came from Hassendean (now Jedbrugh), County of Roxburgh, Scotland. Between 1672 and 1743 they emigrated to Ireland.
In "The General Armory" by Sir Richard Burke Harrison, 59 Pall Mall, London, Eng. is recorded: "Adam Scott (Hassendean 1672) Or. on a bend AZ. a star of six points between two crescents ar. In base a bow and arrow of the second. Crest: A hand holding a pole -- ax ppr. Motto: Trustue and True" It was this crest which William Scott used.
William Scott "called Alexander Scott of Peterborough an uncle." We believe there may have been four brothers, John, Archibald, William and Alexander Scott. We emphasize that we have nothing to prove the following, but strongly suspect that it is so. They were all in Peterborough, except Archibald, and Archibald's son, William went to Peterborough to be with at least one uncle, Alexander. The ages of the men and the similarity of the names that they gave to their children makes it a strong possibility that they were related. For reference see History of Peterborough, N. H. by Albert Smith (1876), also Inscriptions on Gravestones in the two old Cemeteries on the East Hill in Peterborough, N. H.

11. WILLIAM3 SCOTT (ALEXANDER2, UNKNOWN (POSSIBLY WILLIAM)1) was born Abt. 1740 in Townsend, MA, and died Bet. 1810 - 1820 in Peterborough, Hillsborough Co, NH. He married PHOEBE WOODS Abt. 1762 in Peterborough, Hillsborough, Co, NH, daughter of JONATHAN WOOD and MARY BOYDEN. She was born 1743 in Groton, MA, and died in Peterborough, Hillsborough Co, NH.
Notes for WILLIAM SCOTT:
The settlers who came next into the township were Scotch-Irish, as
they were called, being the descendants of Scotch people who had
settled in the north of Ireland, whence they came to this country,
and established themselves at Londonderry [NH] and elsewhere, and, at
a later date, settled in Peterborough, and numerous other town.
As early as 1760, or thereabouts, there were in the town of this
description of persons, John Alexander, William McNee, Alexander Scott,
and William Scott, his son; James Taggart and his son, William
Taggart; and perhaps others. They came mostly from Peterborough.
Henry Strongman came at a later day. With the exception of him, none
of this class of settlers became permanent inhabitants of the township.
They left probably at different times, but all prior to the year 1771,
as none of them are found upon the tax-list of that year. Most or all
of them returned to Peterborough. This WILLIAM SCOTT is the same
Capt. William Scott, of Peterborough, who, in his youth, served in
the French War, and who signalized himself by gallant achievements
during the War of the Revolution, and by no less heroic deeds in
scenes of danger afterwards.

Notes for LEWIS (MAJOR) SCOTT:
Thomas Seymour Scott had access to several family letters of interest, regarding Archibald Scott, and which also help to establish the family relationships.
"Archibald Scott, Swatragh, June 27th 1836.
To his dear Cousin, Col. Lewis Scott, Greenfield Center, Saratoga, Co., NY...
Often heard my father, when alive, saying that he had only one brother who emigrated to America... I live in the town of Swatragh and hold a small piece of land. I have got six of a family, three sons and three daughters. I have two brothers yet alive, and one sister. My sister lives in Scotland, and my two brothers live in the Town of Swatragh. I can say nothing about your Mother's friends. I heard my Mother saying when alive that it was Rosannagh Tait that they called my aunt by my Uncle William Scott who went to America, and that she was bred some place near Garvagh in the County of Londonderry, but there are no Taits living there at this time. My Father died about 19 or 20 years ago. My Mother is dead about six years since. When you write, direct to care of John Wallace post master, Garvagh to be forwarded."
"Archibald Scott, Swatragh, 17th May 1837. To his Cousin Col. Lewis Scott, Greenfield Center, Saratoga Co., NY...
I occupy a small farm in Swatragh, live my industry. I have six children, three boys and three girls. My eldest boy 15 years of age and the next other 13 who are also industrious."
"Archibald Scott, Swateragh, Garvah, County Derry Ireland 8 June 1837.
To Lewis Scott...
I am the son of Hugh Scott of Swateragh...a blacksmith. And the son of old Archibald Scott... a blacksmith also. " And this Archibald was father to William, and your grandfather and mine also. He lived in the Parish of Aryhadaway and Macasquin (camus Benn) all in County Derr
...I sent to you in Aug. 1836 and a second lately, but has not time to reach you yet, and having a favorable opportunity of my neighbor Mr. Scilly ... I have 3 sons and 3 daughters, all a thriving hardy race, bred to industry, and getting a share of education as they advance. I am 45 years of age, blessed with good health, my wife a frugal agreeable and attentive to her domestic concerns ... I have two brothers, Alex, and William, each have their families, and one widow sister Jane who has a family, they are all living agreeably in the fear of God - the love of their acquaintances, and support themselves by their industry. My brother William is a blacksmith, and is a smart handy tradesman. Your grandfather by your mother was John Tate of Garvagh, he was a very respectable Woolen Merchant, he lived in good esteem among his fellow citizens, and died lamented."
"Archibald Scott to Lewis Scott, February the 16 1852.)
Sir:
I take the liberty of writing to let you know that my name is Archibald Scott from the County Derry, Ireland, and I landed in America the third of June 1851, and I stop with a Mr. A. Baldwin of Yonkers, and my father's name is Archibald Scott, and he told me he had some friends in a place called Greenfield, Saratoga County, State of New York."
Thomas Seymour Scott refers to, but does not quote, another letter from the same place, March 12th, 1852, which contained no additional information. He comments that this Archibald Scott is said to have returned to Ireland.

In 1809, Nathan SCOTT settled on lot No. 30, North Survey, which he owned till 1814, when he sold to Henry ROFF Jr. Nathan SCOTT, born in Peterborough, NH in 1782, was a remarkable example of Yankee pluck and perseverance. Born with club feet, he found it difficult to walk, yet he made his way on foot to the Genesee country and by his unaided industry, achieved a home and independence for his family. With rare generosity he gave up to an elder brother, his parental inheritance, to enable that brother to gain a collegiate education and enter the profession of law. The early death of his brother left him empty handed, and he was robbed of a little store of cash that he had when he reached his new home. In 1812 he married Lucy GRAHAM, sister of John GRAHAM Jr., and Mrs. Daniel SMITH. The ceremony was performed by George GREEN, of Potter, then Middlesex. After 1814, they resided on lot 42, of the North Survey, where he died in 1864 at the age of 82 years. His widow still resides on and owns the place, now at the age of 82 years. Their children were William, James, John, Sarah, Frank, Mary Ann, Azubah, Franklin, Nancy, Henry and Robert.

74. FRANCIS MARION (FRANK)7 SCOTT (CHARLES D W J6, WILLIAM KENNEDY5, JOHN WALKER4, WILLIAM (MAJOR)3, ARCHIBALD2, UNKNOWN (POSSIBLY WILLIAM)1) was born August 27, 1851 in Rochester, NY, and died November 03, 1935 in Hastings, OK. He married MARTHA JANE PAYNE July 26, 1869 in Cedar Twp, MO, daughter of ZORA PAYNE and SOPHIA WITTENBERG. She was born February 04, 1851 in Morganton, NC, and died October 04, 1931 in Hastings, OK.
Notes for FRANCIS MARION (FRANK) SCOTT:
Note: Frank was born in New York. When he was less than a year old, his father, Dr. Charles Scott moved his family to Wisconsin. His sister and mother died shortly after they arrived, probably in 1852. His father remarried (probably in 1852 in Wisconsin). In 1856, Frank moved with his father and family to Jefferson City, Missouri. They settled in Cedar, Calloway Co., Missouri. The 1860 Census of Cedar, lists his father Charles, wife, and 5 month old son. Frank is not with this family at the time the census was taken; he would have been 9 years old. His father had a farm, as well as being a country doctor. Frank grew up working on this farm. Frank (age 17) and Martha (age 18) were married at her parent's home by Justice of the Peace, John E. Atkinson. Frank was 6 ft. tall and his wife was 5 ft. tall. They bought a small piece of land close to his father. A few years later, in July 1871, they sold this farm and joined Martha's Payne family in the Kansas Territory (about 200 miles away). The trip took 3 weeks by wagon train. Frank farmed land there. Several years later, his father, Dr. Charles and Frank's half-brothers and half-sister, also moved to this area. Charles probably helped his son Frank buy 80 acres of land in 1880, 3 miles south & 1 mile east of Weir, Cherokee Co., Kansas. Frank raised his family here for the next 20 years. He built a new farm house in 1884. Frank was a difficult father to live with; he was very strict, stern, and without a sense of humor. Work on the farm was difficult, with long hours. Most of Frank's sons left or ran away from home when they were very young. In 1901 Frank decided to move to Hastings, Oklahoma (Chickasaw Territory) to take advantage of new land opportunities. His wife Martha and youngest child Stanley were the only ones to join him. He raised cotton on his farm, located outside the city limits of Hastings. In 1908 he was appointed Justice of the Peace in Hastings. "Judge Scott" held this post for 20 years until his retirement. Frank's son Elmer and his family moved to Hastings to take care of them. After a few years of working the farm, Elmer moved back to his home in Kansas (Frank never shared any proceeds from the farm work). Frank's daughter Mary Scott Frisbie then took over the care of her parents. Mary eventually called on her brother Stanley to take over their parent's care. Frank died at age 84.

In 1901, at age 11, he went with his parents to homestead in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Hastings, Oklahoma). Stanley joined the U.S. Navy during WW I, age 28. He served on a troop ship that sailed between America and Versailles, France. He made a total of 14 trips. After WW I, he worked in the coal mines of Kentucky as a miner and blaster (dynamite). He returned to the area around Weir, Kansas as a miner. In 1930, age 40, he went to Hastings, Oklahoma to relieve his sister Mary, who was then taking care of their parents Frank and Martha. Opal lived next door to the Scott's, with her two children from two previous marriages. Opal took care of Martha's daily living needs. Martha died 5 months after Stanley and Opal were married. During the Depression, Stanley worked for the WPA and drove a school bus. After Frank's death, Stanley inherited his father's farm. In 1937, he sold this farm for $500 and moved to Arvin, California, near his brother Winfield. He got an irrigation job at a big ranch (Di Georgio Farms) near Arvin. He eventually bought an acre of land in Lamont for $575. He built his home on this property and lived here for the rest of his life. He sold half of this property to his brother Winfiled, so that he could also build his home there. Stanley died at age 85.
