The starting of Mt Gilead Church:
"A dissatisfaction having taken place in the church at Friendship in consequence of the right to the ground on which the meeting house stands, it is not good. In consequence of which we, the church at Mt. Gilead, principally having been members of the church at Friendship, have gone into a constitution as follows. . . . We therefore convened at the school house near Sinking Creek, recently occupied by Lowell Summers in Madison Township, Morgan County, Indiana on the 22nd day of March in the year of our Lord 1835. This agreement was signed by Enoch Summers, Alsy Summers, John Lowder, Emiline Lowder, James Randolph, George H. Notes for JAMES LYNN:
+ 1. JAMES LINN/Olin, son of Patrick Linn, was born ca. 1774-1804, probably in Kentucky, perhaps in Pennsylvania. When Polly Linn married John Anderson in 1808 in Madison County James "Olin" paid the bond for his sister.
He was probably the male in Patrick’s house in the 1820 census of Bath County, along with his wife Dosha. James and Dosha migrated to Morgan County IN early, the first of the family to make this trip, as James was on the first Petit Jury of Morgan County 1 April 1823.
James purchased land from Thomas Beeler on 14 February 1829, with William Linn and John S. Wilson, his brother-in-law, as witnesses. He must have died shortly after this as only Dosha and the children are listed on the 1830 census of the county.
Dosha was probably born a Summers. There is a deed in Morgan County IN dated 16 July 1824 in which Enoch and Alicy Summers, Standford and Lucy Summers, James and Dorcas Lynn [but signed Dosha], Henry and Susannah Pense, Nathaniel and Winna Shields, and Joseph Summers, all of Morgan County sold 64 acres of land in Madison Twp to Thomas Beeler. The land was located at S 1/2 of NW, Sec 2, Twp 13N, R2E, bounded on the north by a line agreed upon by Enoch Summers and John Summers.
Dosha and James’ children were apprenticed to others, as orphans, on 7 May 1832. Patrick was apprenticed to Benjamin Blythe and Noah Noble on 7, May 1832. William was apprenticed to Enoch Summers, his uncle, and Mahela Linn to Samuel B. Duree. Minerva Linn, was apprenticed to John Anderson, probably her uncle.
In the early 1830’s Joseph Summers took his new wife, Susannah Bryant, and Dosha and her four children and moved to Adams County, Illinois. On May 5, 1843 "Dotia" Linn married 2nd James Goodpasture in Adams County. He must have died as on 25 March 1847 Dotia Goodpasture married 3rd. William S. Bryant. William Bryant was also from Morgan Co. Indiana, went to Adams Co. early in the 1830’s, and was living next door to Joseph Summers in 1840. In 1850 William and Docia Bryant were living in the town of Lima in Adams County. Living with them was Minerva Carroll, age 22, b. Indiana, and two of Dosha’s grandchildren, William Carroll and a Meredocia. Docia was listed as 48 years old and born in KY. Again, next door was Joseph Summers with wife and family.
By 1860 William S. Bryant had died, but Docia Bryant, 64 years old, was living with her daughter Minerva, and her husband, Leonard Care/Carle/Carrol in Lima Twp, Adams County IL. Also living with them was Mary D. Linn, Patrick Linn’s daughter and Docia’s granddaughter.

Laurel Summers was born in Montgomery Co., Ky., Oct. 2, 1812; was a son
of Enoch and Elsie Summers, nee Hadden, natives of Kentucky, who were married
in 1811, in Montgomery County of that State. In 1823 they removed to Morgan
Co., Ind., where Enoch Summers entered land and farmed until his death,
which occurred in 1845. The family then removed to Iowa, where the mother
died in Jackson County, in 1867, having been the mother of six children
- Laurel, Presley, Redman, Shelton, Dolly and Caleb. Mr. and Mrs. Enoch
Summers in early life were members of the Baptist church, but upon the
organization of the Christian church, joined that denomination, and affiliated
with them until their death. He gave time and money to the building up
of the church, and was one of its most zealous workers. The subject of
this memoir remained on the farm in Morgan County until 1830, when he went
to Indianapolis, where he learned the trade of brick mason. This he followed
until 1837, when, being drawn thither by the then prevailing current, he
came West, and located in the Territory of Wisconsin, in what is now Scott
Co., IA. He here made a Government claim and embarked in farming. He also
established a cattle ranch partnership with his brother, buying cattle
from Indiana. The investment did not prove a lucrative one, and it was
abandoned soon after. In 1838 he was elected to the first Territorial Legislature,
and was re-elected the two succeeding years. In May, 1841, he married Miss
Mary Parkhurst, who was born in Ontario Co., N. Y., Jan. 11, 1822, and
was a daughter of Sterling and Ann Parkhurst, the former a native of Massachusetts,
and the latter of New Hampshire, who were married in the State of New York.
The union of Mr. and Mrs. Summers has been blessed with five children -
Helen L., now Mrs. C. P. Whitford; Elsie A., widow of E. S. Curtis; Sarah,
now Mrs. W. P. Headley, Lewis C., who died in infancy, and Augustus D.
Mr. Summers followed his trade until 1844, when he was elected to the Legislative
Council, and served two years. In 1850 he was elected to the State Legislature,
and in 1853 was appointed United States Marshal of the district of Iowa
under President Pierce; served through his administration and was reappointed
under James Buchanan, and served eight years. Since 1861 he has followed
contracting and various other occupations. He was elected to the mayoralty
of Le Claire four terms, and served as deputy sheriff of Scott County for
three years. In 1874 he was elected one of the trustees of the Iowa Agricultural
College at Ames, and served in that capacity four years. Mr. Summers was
educated in the Democratic school of politics, and still adheres to the
principles of that party.
Old settlers of Scott Co letter to:
LeClaire, Feb. 20, 1858
HON. JAMES GRANT:-Dear Sir: I am fearful that I shall not be able to attend the festival of the old pioneers of Scott county on the 22d inst., in your city. I have a severe cold, and am quite unwell to-day-trust, however, I shall be better on Monday. If so, I shall certainly be down. After witnessing the struggles of the "Old Settlers" for nearly twenty-one years, I feel like rejoicing when they rejoice, feasting when they feast, and mourning when they mourn.
In the event that I am too indisposed to come down, and there should be no person from here to respond to the twelfth regular toast, please do so yourself. I know I am safe in saying that our people would feel safe with their interests confided to your hands.
I think a good many of our old citizens will be down, but very few of them are public speakers.
I send you a volunteer toast, to be read if I cannot come.
Truly yours,
LAUREL SUMMERS.
"From History of Scott County, Iowa 1882 Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co."
Rev. William Rutledge, who was pastor of the Baptist Church in Le Claire for several years, and who aided in the erection of its first house of worship, entered upon his work in that connection in the summer of 1847. He was a native of England, having been born in Braintree, County of Essex, Aug. 19, 1804. He served the long apprenticeship to a tailor in London, to his uncle, then common and required in that country, and a few years after attaining his majority succeeded to the business of his employer, in Avery Row, Bond street, and became quite prosperous. Jan. 21, 1828, he married Sarah Ann Sharp, at St. James, Westminister, a very estimable woman who still survives, making her home with her daughter, Mr. Edward Russell, Davenport. While energetic in Business, the young master tailor exercised his abilities in earnest labors in the Sunday-school and temperance causes particularly, and at length enjoyed an extended reputation as a public speaker in their behalf. The result was that about the year 1843 he surrendered his business and devoted his entire time to lecturing in aid of the "Teetotalers" societies and the Rechabite order. In that connection he labored mainly in Essex and adjacent counties, with frequent visitations in London. Meanwhile along cherished desire to acquire citizenship in the United States, because of his great admiration for American institutions, grew stronger month by month. Securing at last the agreement of his intimate and cherished personal friend, Mr. William Russell (also an earnest laborer in the temperance reform, a "radical" in politics and a life-long enologist of the American Republic), that he, too, would emigrate, Mr. Rutledge closed up his engagements in England, and, leaving with his family, arrived in New York Sept. 1, 1845. Establishing himself in Philadelphia, he soon became intimate with Rev. John Lansing Burroughs, pastor of the Broad Street Baptist Church, by whom he was invited to active participation in the Sunday-school and temperance work of that organization. As a result, he was led to examine the scriptural grounds of the Baptist faith, and to accept that faith as his own. His abilities and worth being speedily recognized, he was appointed a colporteur of the Baptist Publication Society, and accepted a commission to the West. Journeying with his family via the Pennsylvania and Ohio canal and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, hereached Davenport on May 5, 1847, having been previously, in Philadelphia, regularly ordained as minister of the gospeol in the Baptist denomination. In Davenport he was gladly welcomced by the Baptist Church, and after a short residence in the city, was invited to labor with the Baptist Church of Le Claire, Iowa, and Cordova, Ill. These organizations he faithfully served until, in 1855, he was invited to the pastorate of the First Baptist Church in Davenport, in which relation he continued rather more than a year, returning to his old home in Le Claire. Thenceforward, until his death, he continued to labor in the ministry wherever called to the duty he loved so well. Part of the time he was the regular pastor of the Le Claire Church. During other periods he preached at Cordova and Port Byron, Ill., and at Princeton, Iowa, and neighboring towns. Everywhere he was known as "The Elder," and enjoyed the highest esteem of the people. All classes knew him as a thoroughly good man, sincere of speech, warm at heart and pure in life. He died on Oct. 27, 1868, in his Le Claire home, of diabetes, at the age of 64 years, 2 months and 8 days, rejoicing in the realities of the faith and hope he had so long presented to others as the consolation of a dying hour. He was a man of simple habits, earnest purpose and marked trust in Divine Providence. Laboring at his old trade whenever work was offered to him, and accepting that as an aid to his chosen labor of preaching the gospel, his meager salary as a minister always sufficed not only to support his family, but to render his home the hospital resort for many a friend and wayfarer. A favorite with the young, he married in his day a larger number of couples in LeClaire, Princeton, Cordova, Port Byron and vicinity than any other minister ever resident thereabouts, while none were more sought for to attend funerals, or administer consolation in sickness and sorrow.
As an illustration of the kind of duty devolving upon pioneer ministers in the county a third of a century ago, it may be stated that when the Baptist of LeClaire erected their first house of worship in 1847, "Elder" Rutledge carried the hod for several successive days taking to the scaffold the brick and mortar with which Mr. Laurel Summers laid up the walls. That building, since torn down, stood on the north side of Wisconsin avenue, on the corner, one square west of Main street. The basement was long occupied for public-school purposes, town meetings, elections, etc., in common with the uses of the Church; the upper part not being finished until several years after the building was erected. Indeed, the public subscription made for the church erection was conditioned on the uses of the basement herein mentioned.
Long will the memory of those early days be recalled even by those who then were boys and girls among the residents of LeClaire. To all of these the genial smile, the kind word, the earnest life of elder William Rutledge, will have happy recollection to the end of their days

She was born 1820 in Sodus, Wayne Co, New York, and died January 20, 1906 in South Fork, Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa.
Notes for REDMON CORNELIUS SUMMERS:
Born in Kentucky, the family moved to Morgan Co, Indiana. In 1839 following the path of his older brother Laurel, he moved to Camanche, Iowa and for a short time, shared a cabin with his brother Sheldon. The cabin had one big room and a chalk mark dividing it.
Redman began a cattle business with his brother Laurel after moving to Iowa. The business was short lived and in 1844 a devastating tornado struck destroying his cabin.
The tornado swept over the country through Camanche crossing the Mississippi River. Vashtim, Redman's wife and daughter Amanda were saved by being under the bed. A log fell on the bed holding it down. Redman was blown into a cherry tree. His hands were badly scratched by holding onto a branch. Following the loss of his cabin, Redman moved to Waterford, Jackson County, Iowa and farmed there for many years.
In 1845 Redman and his brother Sheldon made a trip to Indiana by horse, one horse for both of them. They rode by the ride and walk plan. One would ride then tie the horse and walk on. When the other caught up they would change again.

"From Vol. 2 History of Davenport and Scott County" by Harry E. Downer - S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. 1910 Chicago
One of the best known representatives of the shipping interests on the Mississippi river is Captain Alvah O. Day, of Davenport, who has gained a wide acquaintance as commander of river vessels plying between St. Paul and St. Louis. He is the owner of two steamboats, the B. Hershie and the Everett. He was born near Rochester, Dodge county, Minnesota, August 1, 1866, and is a son of Lewis and Pauline (Henry) Day. The father was a native of Deerfield, Ohio, born September 9, 1837. His people had gone to that state from Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the town of Deerfield, Ohio, was named by them in honor of their old home. Captain Day's father retained his residence there until about 1860, when he removed with his family to Winnebago county, Wisconsin, where he purchased land and began farming. At the outbreak of the Civil war, however, he put aside all business and personal considerations, enlisting as a private in the Fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, with which he served throughout the war, his meritorious conduct on the field of battle and his unfaltering valor winning him promotion to the rank of lieutenant. It was about 1864 that the Day family removed to Minnesota and from the government entered land near Rochester. At the close of the war the father joined his family there and continued to make his home in that locality until 1871, when he came to Scott county, settling at Le Claire. He was also a steamboat man and purchased one of the first boats that floated down the Wisconsin river. He used it in the navigation of Mississippi waters and was one of the early steamboat captains of this section, making his first trip down the river in 1859. The family continued to reside at Le Claire until 1892. On the 24th of March of that year the mother passed away, being then forty-eight years of age, her birth having occurred in Medina county, Ohio, in 1844. After her death Lewis Day retired and made his home with his son Alvah. They were the parents of six children: Alvah O.; Lewis, who is living in Rock Island, Illinois; George, whose home is in San Francisco, California; Alice, the wife of William Kingsbury, of Wyoming; and Zoe and Emma, both deceased.
Captain Day of this review was only about five years old when the family removed from Minnesota to Iowa, so that his early education was acquired in the public schools of Le Claire. He afterward attended Port Byron College, while his training in navigation was received from his father. He obtained his license as master pilot at the age of twenty-one years and has since followed the river, being today one of the oldest and best known river men in Scott county. He has not only worked his way upward in positions of increaded responsibility, serving as captain for a long period, but has also advanced along material lines, being now the owner of two steamboats, the B. Hershie and the Everett, both of which are stanch river crafts and are liberally patronized by the carrying trade.
Captain Day was married November 16, 1892, to Miss Winifred Davenport, a daughter of James H. and Savilla (Reynolds) Davenport, of Scott county. Mrs. Day was born in Le Claire, Iowa. Her father was the first white child born in Scott county, his natal day being May 4, 1838. His death occurred April 7, 1905. His parents, Adrian L. and Harriet (Lane) Davenport, were among the first settlers in this part of the state and took an active part in the work of pioneer development and improvement, as the rich natural resources of the state were utilized in the effort to plant the seeds of civilization and progress here. Captain and Mrs. Day have two sons: Lewis, born January 23, 1894; and Davenport, born November 4, 1898.
Captain Day is well known in fraternal circles, holding membership with the Modern Woodmen, the Knights of Pythias and the Masons. In the Masonic order he has taken the degrees of the Scottish Rite. He is also connected with the Sons of Veterans and in religious faith is an Episcopalian, belonging to Grace cathedral. Having practically spent his entire life in this county, Captain Day is widely and favorably known, and is recognized as a man of his word who, without sham or pretense in any particular, stands fearlessly in support of what he believes to be right, manifesting a spirit of utmost honor and integrity in his business affairs as well as in his social relations.
Child of GRACE HEADLEY and GEORGE DAY is:

Mrs. H. A. Horton
From "History of Davenport and Scott County" Vol. II by Harry E. Downer-S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. 1910 Chicago.
Surnames: Horton, Van Ostern, Hart, Foster, Mitchell, Brotherlin, Kindley, Headley.
Among LeClaire's highly esteemed ladies is Mrs. H. A. Horton, who has now passed the seventy-first milestone on life's journey, her birth having occurred in Louisville, Kentucky, October 18, 1838. Her father, Nathan Hart, was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1793, and it was after his arrival in America that he met and married Miss Amelia Van Ostern, who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1813. For many years Mr. hart engaged in the dry-goods business, but was living retired at the time of his death. He came to Iowa in 1857, settling in LeClaire, and for a long period was connected with the commercial activity and prosperity. He always adhered to the Jewish faith and in his political views was a democrat but never an office seeker. In his family were eight children: Mary; Elenora, the deceased wife of Major Foster, of the Eleventh Iowa Infantry; Rebecca, who became the wife of Colonel Mitchell, of the Eleventh Iowa infantry; Moses, who died in Walla Walla, Washington; Mrs. Horton; Ada, who resides in Wakefield, Massachusetts; Belle, who makes her home in Butte, Montana; and Edward, who was a newspaper editor of Chicago, where he died in 1889.
Mrs. Horton spent her girlhood in her native city and was nineteen years of age when she came with her parents to Iowa, where she has since made her home. On the 20th of September, 1865, she gave her hand in marriage to H. A. Horton, a son of George W. and Eliza (Brotherlin) Horton, who were residents of Clinton, Iowa, at the time of their demise. Their son, H. A. Horton, acquired his education in the graded schools of LeClaire and, entering business life, became a steamboat engineer on the Mississippi river. He always led a busy and useful life, was faithful, reliable and industrious and his services were therefore, always in demand.
Mr. and Mrs. Horton became the parents of two children. Belle S., who was born February 23, 1868, is the wife of Edgar Kindley, a resident of Silvis, Illinois, where he is filling the position of superintendent of schools. They have one child, Murena Kindley. George W. Horton, who was born in 1871, is a resident of Rock Island, Illinois, where he carries on business as an electrician. He wedded Mary Headley and they have one child, Isabel Horton, who was born march 25, 1906.
The death of Mr. Horton occurred January 8, 1910, and was deeply regretted by many friends as well as his immediate family. He was a faithful member of the Masonic fraternity, affiliating with Snow Lodge, No. 44, F. & A. M., at LeClaire, and was held in high esteem. He gave his political support to the republican party and was a stanch advocate of its principles. He held the office of school director and was also a member of the city council, in which connection he exercised his official prerogatives in support of various progressive public measures. His long residence in this county made him widely known and his many substantial qualities gained for him the high regard of those with whom he was brought in contact.

Mrs. H. A.
