Outer Banks Lighthouses

Currituck
Bodie Island
North of Corolla is Currituck Lighthouse on Currituck Sound, left.  Farther south, just north of
Oregon Inlet is Bodie Island Lighthouse, right, on Pamlico Sound.

Farther south are Cape Hatteras Lighthouse,  the tallest on the east coast, which was moved in 1999
from its original site, where it was just a matter of time until it fell into the Atlantic. To reach the
next of the Outer Banks lighthouses, you have to take a ferry, below left, to Ocracoke Island.  The
shimmering white lighthouse is the oldest in the country, built in 1823 and a mere 75 feet tall.
Last year the little lighthouse was opened to the public.  You cannot climb it, but I was able to
photograph the stair, below right.

The newest "lighthouse" in the Outer Banks is the Roanoke Marshes Light, an exterior reconstruction of the square cottage-style screw-pile lighthouse which stood at the southern entrance to Croatan Sound, near Wanchese.  It was decommissioned in 1955, and lost in the Sound during an attempt to move it to private property. The new lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, guiding boats into Shallowbag Bay. Dedicated in September, 2004. the lighthouse is on the Manteo waterfront, on the east side of Roanoke Island.
Its twin, below, may be found in nearby Plymouth, N.C., the Roanoke River Lighthouse, reconstructed in 2003.

Currituck
I photographed Currituck in  November 2003 silhouetted against a sunset sky.

Cape Lookout National Seashore, only accessible by boat, is where you find of this lighthouse with its distinctive vertical checkerboard pattern. Gia took this shot from the spot where we picnicked in May 2000. Cape Lookout is being kept in its natural state. Primitive camping is allowed, but there are no facilities except for a few covered picnic tables. The former assistant keeper's quarters that serve as a visitor center have restrooms, however.

The lighthouse has been in service since 1859 and is currently operated automatically by the Coast Guard, Fort Macon group. Farther south still are the lighthouses at Cape Fear and Oak Island. I'll be checking those out one of these days.
