James Hillhouse was born about 1746 in western Pennsylvania. Sometime during or shortly after the French and Indian War he moved with his parents to South Carolina, settling on Bullock Creek in present-day York County . Here he married Mary Dickey in about 1771. She was born in 1753 in Albemarie County,Virginia, a daughter of John Dickey and Martha McNeeley. In 1790 James moved his family to the Pendleton District,South Carolina (persent day Anderson County) and in 1803 they moved to Livingston County,Kentucky, settling on Crooked Creek in that part which subsequently became Crittenden County. James and Mary (Dickey) Hillhouse had eleven children: John, married Bethia Sharp; William: James, unmarried: George, married Elizabeth Dobbins;Robert Dickey, married Rebecca Nancy Henry; David, married Elizabeth Henry; Margaret, married Boling Thompson; Eleanor, married David Lamb; MAry; Martha, married David Hill; and Sarah, James and Mary died in Livington County, Kentucky in 1835 and 1834, respectively.

Except for a brief stay in Lawrence County, Tenn. in 1819-1820, Robert D. and Nancy lived in Livingston County,Kentucky for about thirty years. In 1836 he moved his wife and twelve children to Jefferson County, Illinois, settling on land in Section 19 in present day Rome Township. The children of Robert D. and Rebecca (Henry) Hillhouse were: Mary Ann, unmarried; James Henry, married Mrs. Mary (Gatson) White, lived in Jefferson County but left no issue; Clarinda, married Christopher Ayers and lived in Wayne County,Illinois; Eliza Penina, married Rev. Alexander Kyle and moved to Madison County,Illinois; John Clelland married Elizabeth Ann Davidson and moved to Iowa; Martha Jane, married (1) Moses Garrison (2) Joseph S. Bailey and moved to Wayne County,Illinois; Margaret Lovina, unmarried; Nancy Lucinda, married Riley Keil and lived in Jefferson County, Illinois; Hannah Rebecca, married Thomas Dale and lived in Jefferson County,Illinois; Sarah Minerva, married Charles H. Brooks and moved to Madison County,Illinois; Robert Lapsley, married and moved to Madison County,Illinois; Robert Lapsley, married Mary Hester Ann Elkins and lived in Jefferson and Fayette Counties,Illinois; William Knox Stuart, married (1) Lurana Jane Richardson, (2) Olive L. Hahn, (3) Mary Rebecca Williams and lived in Iowa and points west. Robert Dickey Hillhouse died in his Jefferson County home in 1853. Shortly after the Civil War most of the family moved to Poweshieck County, Iowa where Rebecca died in 1875. Although the name seems to have disappeared from Jefferson County, there are still some descendants living within the county;
Ralph G. Kell of Field Township is a grandson of Nancy L. (Hillhouse) Kel l. There are descendants of Robert Lapsley Hillhouse through his daughter , Margaret Jane (Hillhouse) Watts.
