Obituary: Lewis Press Lewis,KS Thursday Feb 12, 1948
The Weather-This blizzard which started about Tuesday is a humdinger for drifts and real cold weather.
It's a fact-The Lewis Press is the only newspaper in the country that gives a damn about Lewis and the surrounding community.Obituary-Peter Kearstin
Peter Kearstin was born in St Joseph,MO,March 1,1858 to Katherine and Egnetis Kearstin. When 3 years of age, he moved with his parents to a claim near Belleville,KS. His mother died when he was six. Three years later his father was killed in an accident leaving him an orphan at the age of nine, to battle the world for himself. He worked on cattle ranches, herding cattle and other work that a boy of his age could do.
At the age of 18 he secured a mail contract from St. Briget to Seneca,KS . He carried mail a number of years. After leaving this job, he did more ranch work. In the year 1884 he began to think about going to western Kansas. He bought a team and wagon and started west looking for a location.
After traveling in western Kansas several weeks, he camped at Belpre, where at the time there was one house. The E.H.(Ed) McAdden family lived in this house and had the post office. Ed McAdden, Belpre's first real estate dealer located Peter Kearstin on his claim 2 1/2 miles south and 1 mile west of Belpre on August 4, 1884.
The following months he improved his claim, hauling freight from Larned to inland towns to buy provisions and material for improvement. He was married October 31,1885 to Mary Ellen Dumback of Concordia,KS. They moved to their newly improved claim to make their home. To this union seven children were born; Lula,Lucy,Zella,Walter,John, Blanche and Pearl. They reared their family on the claim enduring the hardships of all pioneers. He made the claim his home until the time of his death.
He passed away Wednesday January 28, at the home. He was 89 years, 10 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn his passing four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Lula Faulkner,Belpre; Mrs. Lucy Bailey, Kingsdown; Mrs. Zella Young, Bloom; Walter and John of Belpre; Mrs. Blanche Kalles, Needles,Calif. Pearl the youngest daughter died June 1, 1926. He also leaves seven grandchildren. Besides his immediate family he leaves other relatives and a host of friends that will greatly miss him.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb 3,1948, in the St. Bernard's Church at Belpre. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. W.L.Birzer. Internment was in the Belpre cemetary. Pianist was Mrs. Ollie Van Arsdale . Pallbearers were Lester Reader, Lawrence Gales, Ollie Adam jr; Leonard Miller, Roy Breitenbach and Peter Breitenbach. (Poem followed)
