Buried in Bailey Cemetary 1 mile east, 5 miles north of Wayne City in Wayne County, Illinois. Buried in "old" section on north side of roadway, west of intersection near "the Bailey Church". New markers set as of 6-13-1990. I eyewitnessed inscriptions and markers. Plots in northeast corner of old cemetary. Other information gathered from Illinois state census 1860 to 1880 located at Illinois State Library and researched 6-13-1990. Grave marker shows Joseph S. Bailey born March 28, 1808 died Jan 20 1883. Illinois state census shows him as widower, farmer, born in Virginia, living in Hickory Hills, Wayne, Illinois, age 73, estimated year of birth 1807.

Letter sent to Marcia Bennett (g-g-great granddaughter of Joseph Albert Bailey) sent in the 1960's.
In response to your letter of Sept 28 I'm enclosing the following information.
Bailey cemetary has no Sexton and the letter to me to me because I was known by the sheriff, IM, as an elected member of the cemetery board of trustees in the precinct adjoining the Bailey church and cemetary.
Your g-g-grandfather Joseph Bailey and his wife Martha are buried in the Bailey cemetary with their monuments to substantiate that fact. The dates on their tombstones are as you gave in your letter with one exception , the date of birth on your g-g-grandfather's stone is 1808 instead of 1806.
Mrs. Iva Bailey told me that a Mr.Ashmel Warren of Oklahoma whose grandmother was the daughter of your g-g-grandfather Jos. Bailey confirmed the dates on the present tombstones to (unreadable word) on a recent visit to the Bailey Cemetary. Your g-g-grandfather's daughter Sarah Warren whose husband was Jimmie (possibly James) Warren (both deceased) had the original monuments replaced with new ones approximately 12 to 15 years ago. This Mrs.Warren lived to age 97. Her family consisted of 2 sons and two daughters- Everrett and Orville-Nora and Martha. All deceased except Orville. Orville is living in the Way Fair Restorium a newly built home in Fairfield, Illinois. I went to visit Orville yesterday. I've known Orville and his family for many years.
I obtained some information from a Mrs. Ina Bailey (mentioned above) widow of Elmer Bailey who is/was a grandson of your g-g-grandfather Jos. Bailey. Mrs. Ina Bailey lives in the Bailey Church area and vouches for the fact that Mr.Joseph Bailey had donate a partion of his farm for the Bailey cemetery. Martha Jane Warren daughter of Sarah W mentioned above and grand daughter of Mr. Jos.Bailey married a Mr.Reed. While I didnt know the old folks I did know their four children-Leslie Pearl,Clarence,Charley and Wilburn (I got information from Leslie. The co. seat of this co(Wayne) is Fairfield, not Geff. I've heard My parents talk about the fire that destroyed the court house and its records in 1886.
The Bailey church Clerk's records show that the Bailey Church was organized in an old log building across the road from the present bld'g on March 17-1871.
If we can assume that the cemetery was plotted at the time the church was organized which in all probabilities it was using the dates on the monuments and church clerks records.
Would show your g-g-grandmother to have been buried 4 years after the cemetery was plotted and your g-g-grandfather (Joseph Bailey) 12 years after.
The point I'm trying to establish in the last paragraph is that all dates ages, etc coincide and are logical.
I hope the above information will be of use to you in establishing your family record.
I may have gave you more information than was necessary in some instances but I wanted you to be able to use the information with confidence in its reliability.
I would be glad to help further if I can. Thank you for the check.
Yours very truly,
Frank E. Long
