Collins Gazette August 15, 1918John Conrad Belcher son of John C. and Mary Belcher was born in Buchanan
Co., Illinois July 7, 1850. He was the fifth child of a family of
thirteen children. He came to Iowa with his parents when a small child
and settled near Iowa Center in Story County where shortly after his
father died, leaving his mother with the family of small children. He
grew to manhood on the old home farm near Iowa Center. On July 27, 1871 he
was united in marriage with Mary M. Shearer. To this union two daughters
were born Mrs. Minnie E. Bloomfield of Maxwell and Mrs. Effie A. Cobb of
Netawaka, Jackson Co., Kansas. He also reared one foster son Harvey L. Pointer of
Rhodes, whom together with a loving wife, twelve grand-children and five
great grandchildren mourn the loss of a loving husband, father and grand
father. He also leaves two brothers, William and Frank of Iowa Center
and one sister Mrs. Minnie Whitinger of Riceville. In February, 1871, he
moved to the farm two miles west of Collins where he lived for forty two
years. He moved to Collins in November 1913 where he resided until his
death which occurred August 7, 1918. He had reached the age of 88 years
and one month. He leaves a host of friends and relatives to mourn the
departure of a good citizen and friend. The funeral service was by his
request held in the M.E. church in Collins Friday August 9, 1918 at 2:30
p.m. and was conducted by D. C. Bunenburg of Iowa Center after which

Mrs. Mary Belcher, widow of the late John C. Belcher of Collins, died
Thursday, July 12, at 8 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W.
Bloomfield, 622 7th Street, Ames. Death was due to heart disease and old
age. She had been in ill health for several weeks.
Mrs. Belcher was born Dec. 20, 1848 (1845 in Census 1900), in Indiana, the daughter of
Valentine and Magdalene Shearer. She was united in marriage to John C.
Belcher on July 27, 1871, and to this union two daughters were born; Mrs.
J. W. Bloomfield of Ames and Mrs. Henry Cobb of Lawrence, Kans. Her
husband died 16 years ago at their home in Collins.
She also leaves eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one sister
Mrs. James Womach of LeRoy, Minn., and a host of other relatives and
friends.
She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, her father having been
