Wednesday, November 11th, will be the Running of the Silver Rose. Our Council will be ‘running’ from Mannford to Yale, Oklahoma.
From the KofC Supreme Council Website, here is what the Running of the Silver Rose is all about:
A full week of Knights of Columbus events in Phoenix, including the 127th Supreme Convention, the Marian Congress and the lively Guadalupe Festival, was launched on Sunday (Aug. 2) with the presentation of the Silver Rose at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral.
A symbol of the unity among peoples in the Americas, the rose had been carried over the course of months from Canada and through the United States.
The presentation in the Phoenix Cathedral at the 9 a.m. Mass was one stop on the long journey in the annual Knights of Columbus event known as the Running of the Silver Rose.
The rose is also a symbol of the Order’s commitment to the pro-life cause, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is claimed as the patroness of the pro-life movement. The rose’s final destination is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12.
In the opening procession of the Mass, the rose was presented by members of the Columbian Squires, the youth group of the Knights of Columbus. Carrying the rose was Esteven Wetzel, a member of St. Mary’s Squires Circle #5000 in Phoenix. He was accompanied by fellow Squires Paul Taylor and Devin Morales.
The Squires were chosen for the honor because the annual Running of the Rose was started more than 50 years ago by members of the Columbian Squires.
“I think it is pretty cool to get to participate in keeping this tradition going,” Wetzel said before Mass. “I know the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and I think it is amazing. Also, I am a pro-life person. I pray in front an abortion clinic with my pro-life group. I think it is an honor to represent the pro-life message with this rose.”
Celebrating the Mass was Father Paul Sullivan, director of vocations for the Phoenix Diocese. He told the congregation that the rose, which was placed before the cathedral’s large image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was “a sign of our commitment to the protection of all human life.”
The Silver Rose will be a part of the celebrations at the Guadalupe Festival on Saturday, Aug. 8, when some 16,000 people are expected to fill the Jobing.com Arena for an afternoon and prayer, song, witness talks and intercultural exchange.
For 50 years, the Knights of Columbus has sponsored the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of America. The purpose of the is to honor our Lady of Guadalupe and to reaffirm our commitment to the sanctity of life.
This past May, three Silver Roses left Ontario, Canada, and have been traversing the United States by a Western, Central and Eastern route. In November, all three Roses will come together in Laredo, Texas, to travel over the International Bridge and be delivered to Knights from Monterey, Mexico.
The Western Rose, traveling south through the Mountain States, is the one that arrived in Phoenix.
Alex Brown, a candidate for Eagle Scout at St. Pius X, has presented a project to repair our playground for his Eagle project. A big thanks to him and we are looking forward to seeing the results of this ambitious project!
James Williams was NOT present to win the Pot of Gold this month. Make sure you are present to win!
We at Council 4721 can help by collecting new or gently used baby clothes and toys before Christmas this year. Although they can use almost anything, they really need items that the mother can take with her when she moves from the Madonna House. The goal is to collect as much as they can by our December 3rd meeting.
Donating for this drive is easy! All you have to do is to bring your items to the council hall OR call David and Tammy Bassler (Family of the Month for November) or email at djbassler@cox.net (I have not included the phone on the web, please email or see the handout from the meeting) to be picked up. If you want them picked up, let David or Tammy know an address and they will come by on a Friday or Saturday to collect what you might have to donate.
The following items are examples of what are needed:
October Knight of the Month - Mike Buckendorf November Knight of the Month - Jim Miller (our prayers for Jim's wife and family in this time of loss) October Family of the Month - Bill and Cheryl Hull November Family of the Month - David and Tammy Bassler
Our prayers go out to the soldiers at Fort Hood in their time of grief and need after the tragedy that occurred.
Our prayers for Grace Williams who has advanced breast cancer
Our prayers for Phil Nickel's mother
and prayers for a sister of a member of our Ladies Auxillary, Susan Monday
Our prayers for those that I missed this month and last in the Good of the Order, no slight intended.
We are having another Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, October 18th at St. Pius X Church.
We need workers!
If you can help set up - 7:30
If you can help serve - 8:30, 10:30
If you can help clean up - 11:00
We will be serving after the 8:00 and 10:00 Mass.
Thanks,
Arthur Barber
VATICAN CITY, 30 SEP 2009 (VIS) - Pope Benedict's general prayer intention for October is: "That Sunday may be lived as the day on which Christians gather to celebrate the risen Lord, participating in the Eucharist".
His mission intention is: "That the entire People of God, to whom Christ entrusted the mandate to go and preach the Gospel to every creature, may eagerly assume their own missionary responsibility and consider it the highest service they can offer humanity".
On October 16th, from 11 P.M Friday night to 4 or 5 A.M. Saturday Morning, Council 4721 will be covering the 40 Days for Life prayer garden in front of the Planned Parenthood in Tulsa. We need volunteers to cover these hours. Currently, we have 11 pm covered. Please email Lon with the time you will volunteer for.
St. Pius has signed up to cover the 24 hrs starting from October 16th, Friday morning 7 A.M. to October 17th, Saturday morning 7 A.M.
If you can help us from that would be great.
This fall, our community will once again be uniting with dozens of other cities across the U.S. for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history – the 40 Days for Life campaign.
People of faith are praying that this effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion.
40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign that has generated measurable lifesaving results in more than 130 cities where it has been implemented. Some locations have reported as much as a 28% drop in local abortion numbers and hundreds of new people getting involved in local lifesaving ministry efforts. The 40 Days for Life campaign is made up of three key components:
- Prayer and Fasting: inviting people of faith throughout our city to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abortion
- Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside Reproductive Services, the abortion facility in Tulsa at 6136 E 32nd Place
- Community Outreach: taking a positive, upbeat pro-life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, church presentations, petition drives and public visibility

Grand Knight’s Report: 1st Degree practice went well after the Officer’s Meeting. Feast Day went well Saturday night at St. Pius. Knights picked up the chairs on Sunday morning. District Officers’ meeting was conducted by our District Deputy. Would like to talk to members of the team after the meeting. We currently show that we have 186 members on our roster. We will be working on getting those all active and accounting for these members. Lon talked to Principal at Pius X, he will help with marketing our blood drives, pancake breakfasts, etc. in their school newsletters. This is a great opportunity for the Knights since it will get KofC information in the hands of younger parents.
Chancellor's Report:
Chancellor’s Report – Beginning a Retention Committee. We are going to call all the members and try to bring them back into the Council. We will be talking to them and getting them involved. Without the retention chairman, the council cannot take a member off the rolls, even if he has not attended meetings or paid dues.
Program Director's Report:
Bob Caruso, Program Director:
Blood Drive Scheduled for the 27th of September. Going to Veteran’s Hospital in Muskogee for Mass with the Veterans. A lot of these guys don’t get visitors so this is a valuable service to our servicemen. Thursday, leave Tulsa at 8:15 AM Desire to have a new Pro Life Director position.
Pancake Breakfast and Blood Drive on September 27th.
Next Pancake Breakfast is October 18th, November 29th. Took in over $200 for the last Pancake Breakfast.
Maybe we can get some members that are not involved in the next Pancake Breakfast. We have a lot of fun doing it. I encourage each member to call one of the members to help in the next activity.
We do need to get new members to replenish our ranks! Carry some form 100’s around with you! Give them out at Mass and Church activities. If you don’t have any, get two or three and keep them in the car.
Encourage new members and transfers and make ourselves known.
Knights of Columbus have given billions of hours giving to the community and the Church. We don’t have to do everything but, get members involved in one or two activities that they have not been active in before.
Make certain forms are turned in on time and work on membership.
The healthcare reform legislation currently before Congress contains an abortion mandate that is a grave threat to human life. The bill's language will result in federally mandated abortion coverage by nearly all health plans, recruitment of abortion doctors into local health networks, and the nullification of many state laws that place reasonable limits on abortion.
The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) has called this legislation the "largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade."
We urge you to write to your senators and congressman today. Click here where you can learn more about the health legislation and send a message to your two senators and congressman.

Blood Drive
Our blood drive on July 19 at St Pius X was a great success! We set a new standard of donors (24) which was 33% more than our previous high.
Eleven Knights (J. Arroyo, Mike Canfield, Bob Caruso, Scott Collier, Bill Hull, Pat McAuliff, Tom Metzler, Jim Miller, Matt Soerries, Mike Soerries and Jim Williamson) donated as well as three Knight family members (Cheryl and Mike Hull and Susan Stackler).
We plan to build on this success and have an even better turnout at our next drive on September 27th.
Thank you all for your gift of life.
Veterans' Mass
Each month, a handful of 4721 Knights (Lon Unsell, Leroy Weismann, Paul Dudley and Bob Caruso) travel to Claremore to join several other council Knights and ladies to accompany VA Hospital Catholic veterans to mass.
Fr. Eichhoff of St. Cecilia is the celebrant and holds the service in the hospital’s chapel. The service is held at 9:30 on the second Thursday of each month. Some of these veterans have few outside visitors and are very appreciative of our visits. Contact any of the above members to join our carpool to Claremore.

As a clarification, flockNotes is a means for the council to send out notices of meetings or events to the membership. This is, really, just what it says, a note. This is not used to send long emails, it is for reminders. Tonight, for example, I sent out a notice of the business meeting. On other occassions, I have sent out reminders for the Blood Drive, etc.

An old priest was dying. He sent a message for his banker and his lawyer, both church members, to come to his home. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room, the priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. He grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled, and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything. Both the banker and lawyer were touched and flattered that the Father would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled; he had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them. They both remembered his many long, uncomfortable sermons about greed, covetousness, and avaricious behavior that made them squirm in their seats.
Finally, the banker said, "Father, why did you ask us to come?"
The old priest mustered up his strength and then said weakly, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I want to go."
Just a reminder to all, Ed's Wedding is this weekend at St Anne's parish. Dress time is 11:00 am in the Chapel. I have heard from about five or six people so far, so if you can be there, be there. Remember to iron your capes and ruffle your chappeaux feathers.

The Knights are requested to pray for the Archbishop's full and speedy recovery.

Gentlemen,
As previously noted, today is my last day on the job as Assistant District Marshall for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. It has been my pleasure to have served in this capacity for the Order.
The Honor Guard at each Assembly, should be functional by following existing rules and regulations. The FN for each Assembly, is responsible for the Honor Guard. All requests concerning the Honor Guard, are his responsibility. The Dress Code, is his responsibility.
I have one suggestion for FN's, and that is to only consider HG requests when at least 4 HG's are committed. If a HG request is taken with 3 or 2 HG's, and one has to back out, that leaves an HG detail that will just not look good for the Order.
